News from the ORCHARD

We help families grow their dreams

Think about the people who have influenced you over the years: parents, teachers, friends, relatives, spouses, coaches, pastors, supervisors, co-workers, neighbors, and other role models. Different people at different times in our lives nudge us and shape us into who we are and who we will become.

Last year, Sipe’s did its share of nudging and shaping, helping children become a little more

competent and confident. Most children come to Sipe’s during a crucial transitional phase in their lives, making our time with them especially influential. The changes they make might be dramatic or subtle, but most make positive strides forward by the time they leave us.

We focused on restoration in 2014. This annual report offers a glimpse at what we did last year to restore our buildings, grounds, and programs, as well as children’s hopes, dreams, and lives. Of course, our great staff, committed board, and support-ive community all together make it possible for us to continue helping children grow and flourish.

From the President

Jamie Brown, CEO

A new telephone system came to Sipe’s in 2014. Here, the staff are learning to use it.

A jolly and enthusiastic group of 33 volunteers from Corning kicked off the 2015 volunteer projects at Sipe’s with a bang. They scraped, painted, sorted, cleaned, hauled, and otherwise worked to accomplish a huge amount of work.

The children enjoyed some new activities in 2014, including a weekly music class withMrs. Miles.

NCPK at the Tyndall CenterThe Tyndall Center is steady, maintaining its five-star rating, providing engaging and developmentally appropriate learning activities for four-year-olds year after year, and graduating fifty-one students ready for kindergarten. Several improvements came about in 2014, all of which were made possible by grants or volunteer efforts:

• Building Enhancements include a new roof, a new sidewalk, and a new gardening area.

• New Technology, in the form of three iPads for the three classroom teachers, make planning, recording, and reporting much easier.

• Music Classes with volunteer teacher Mrs. Miles get the children singing and moving with the music every week.

• Library Time, made possible by parent volunteers who organized the books, enable children to check out books every week. The Tyndall Center is fortunate to have a large collection of age-appropriate books, donated by numerous businesses, groups, and individuals.

• Stretch-and-Grow, a biweekly physical education class, provides themed work outs for the children, rewards for good deeds, and coaching on healthy eating and nutrition for the whole family.

• Parenting Classes which help parents continue their children’s classroom growth at home are provided in conjunction with the Catawba County Parenting Network.

Houston Houston increased its average population from six to nine in 2014, making a busy house even busier. The program served fifteen youth for the year.Changing a young adult’s self-image is one of the Houston program’s greatest challenges and achievements. Most of the youth in the program do not realize their skills and potential. They do not see themselves as high school (or college) graduates, skilled employees, or valuable people. The Houston program helps them see themselves in a new and positive light.

• As is typical of most residents, Martina saw herself with only a few basic skills: reading, talking to people, smiling. She had no idea that her ability to speak Spanish was a unique and valuable skill, nor did she think she could use that skill successfully. After some encouragement from the staff, she now volunteers as an interpreter with a nearby non-profit, building her skill and self-confidence.

• Tom has lived at Houston for nearly a year. Tom is never serious, completely lacks motivation, barely graduated from high school, and failed his first semester of community college. No one has ever taken care of Tom, and his mother is incredibly challenging. But the amazing skill that Tom possesses (yet never identified) is his unfailing care for other people. Tom received a pair of gloves for Christmas; he gave those gloves to a fellow resident who works outside and had talked about his hands getting cold. Tom makes sure another resident who is a chronic night-owl gets enough sleep. The list goes on. Tom says Houston has taught him a great deal about living on his own, and he is now exploring vocational options with the help of Job Corps.Program Supervisor Jackie Brown says that the Houston program is “more than just about the kids.” As Houston changes young people’s lives, it changes the community as well. Young people who might have dropped out of school are attending college. Young people who were headed for jail are finding their own apartments. Young people who expected to live on food stamps and handouts are gainfully employed. Young people who would have depended on public assistance are paying their own way and standing successfully on their own.

Sipe’s President Jamie Brown and the staff and youth of Houston Cottage welcomed friends and supporters to several Open Houses held in 2014. The Open Houses offered the community a time to learn more about the transitional living programand the young people who live there.

Light

Even where there is distance, there is a light. It rests ready to rise through the night. Hope rains down to give us another lift, As we gather strength from it. We realize the gift. Nothing in the past holds our future, because you see, Our hearts and minds lie awake presently. We’ll overcome any trials, Leaving the battlefield wearing smiles. So as we move forward, we confidently speak our words. Our voices finally heard.

From One of Our Residents

This past year, we have asked for help so that we can expand the capacity of the Houston Transitional Living Program to meet an overwhelming need. Grant makers have responded:

• The Food Lion Charitable Foundation gave so that we can buy more food.

• The Millholland and Unifour Foundations gave so that we can increase the number served in Houston Cottage.

• The Broyhill Foundation and GKN gave to further equip Houston Cottage.

• The George Foundation gave to enable us to expand the program into a second building on campus. Thanks to this and other support, as well as hundreds of volunteer hours, we are seeing the Houston program begin to grow and more young people benefit from its services.

In one activity, campers were blindfolded andchallenged to identify common foods. Reactions varied widely, to say the least.

Everyone enjoyed horses again this summer.

One of the traditions of summer camp is a July picnic, enjoyed by the campers, their families, and the Sipe’s staff.

Summer CampOver forty children participated in our 2014 summer camp, nine of whom received full or partial scholarships thanks to the United Way Youth Council and other donors. As in years past, campers enjoyed a variety of games, hikes, field trips, and other indoor and outdoor activities. One highlight of 2014 was the return of horseback riding, this year provide by Jennifer Bandy at Stillwater Farms.

Camp offered weekly themes this year, presenting campers with games, challenges, and other activities based around current interests. Two of the most popular borrowed from the reality shows The Amazing Race and Survivor. Both of these weeks encouraged campers to work together in teams and to explore different cultures, try new foods, and stretch themselves both physically and mentally.

New Agency Coming to CampusThe Children’s Advocacy and Protection Center (CAPC) will move to Sipe’s in 2015. They will occupy the front part of the Tyndall Center. The agreement is signed, the building remodeling is underway, and their move should take place sometime in the next few months. The CAPC serves children who are victims of abuse and neglect.

The Circle K Club from Catawba Valley Community College brought Christmas projects and toys for all of the children in the TyndallCenter. Their advisor, Linda Baker (far right), is a past vice-chair of Sipe’s Orchard Home’s board of directors.
