Top Ten Responsibilities that Students Must Own1. Be your own advocate. Stake a claim in the classroom by making sure the teacher knows who you are.2. Ask lots of questions.... and show confusion appropriately.3. Communicate your struggles to your teachers. What is going on that affects your work?4. Think of school as your office in training. Are you a good co-worker?5. Dress for success, but don’t panic, you don’t have to wear a suit to be taken seriously.6. Do your best, all the time!7. Academically sweat everyday! School is weight-lifting for your brain. You have to work out your muscles,

make them a little sore, if you want to see them grow.8. Find ways to relate to your reading and writing. Connect background knowledge to what you are learning

and help your teacher make the lesson come alive.9. Be in class, physically and mentally - ALL THE TIME - Don’t jeopardize your training.10. Surround yourself with other students who can help you, support you, and cheer you on. Be kind and

gentle to everyone.

Student-Led Conferences - Thursday, January 31, from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m.The MOST important point of conferences is that your child sees that you are interested in what he or she is doing at school! You will have the opportunity to provide meaningful feedback, review his/her work, and listen to your child explain to you how they have academically grown the first two quarters. You will also be able to discuss your child’s future goals and daily action steps to ensure he or she is on target to reach their academic, social, and emotional potential.

The format for this evening will be a combination of traditional conferences and student-led conferences. If you are unable to attend, you are highly encouraged to engage in a similar discussion at home. The at-home form will be available in a future email. We also encourage you to regularly review and discuss your child’s electronic portfolio at home.

PresentationI will be presenting at 7:00 p.m. about the different social networking sites our students are using and what you can do to monitor and protect your child. If you have any suggestions or questions you would like addressed, please send me an email or give me a call 708-218-7811.

Sign upTraditional conference - Your child’s teacher(s) will contact you if they would like to conference with you. If we haven’t contacted you by Friday, January 18, and would like to schedule a traditional conference, please contact your child’s teacher.Student-Led - You will receive an email from Mrs. Jones explaining how to sign up electronically Monday, January 14. We will provide 30 minutes blocks of time, however, you may stay as long as you like.At-home conference - I will email the form to you, print it, fill it out with your child, and have your child bring it to their homeroom teacher before Wednesday, February 6.

6th Grade Math with Mrs. Novotny

When returning from winter break, the 6th grade math classes will continue their work with integers. They have made their own integer study cards at StudyStack.com These can be used to practice their integer skills and/or to study for a test. Also, they will be using using “Order of Operations” with integers, so you might hear them talking about “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally”, which is a mnemonic device to help memorize the order in which to solve multi-operation math problems.

January will also be an introduction to algebra!! In Chapter 2, students will evaluate and write algebraic expressions and write and solve both one-step equations and inequalities.

The advanced class will be working on Chapter 4, which covers the topics of exponents, factors, and fractions, but involves variables. They will learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide expressions containing powers with

the same base. They will also recognize rational numbers, and simplify rational numbers that contain powers. Look for their fun scientific notation projects at the end of the month!

6th Grade ScienceMr. Swick January 2013

We will be finishing up our astronomy unit in January with a trip around the solar system. Starting

with the sun and working our way out to the Kuiper Belt, students will discover the building blocks of our solar system.

Activities for this unit:

• What power source fuels the sun?

• Build an astrolabe to measure star angles

• Create a scale model of the solar system

• Compare and contrast the definitions of planet and dwarf planet

• Investigate similarities and differences in the inner and outer planets

•Discover comets, asteroids and meteors

Plate Tectonics

January

Activities for this unit:

• Use Bunsen Burners to uncover the force that powers plate tectonics

• Evidence of seafloor spreading and magnetic field reversals

• Collecting data samples from volcanoes and earthquakes

• Create earthquake waves

Students did some

excellent Work on their Space Exploration

Projects!

Following astronomy, students will examine how Earth’s plates can move. What force can move something as large as a continent? How did science move from continental drift theory to plate tectonics? How does Earth’s magnetic field provide evidence that the seafloor is spreading apart?

Mrs. Scheiwe

The 6th grade language arts students are starting off the new year by investigating poetic forms and devices.  Each child rated items from a list of literary terms from 1 ("I know this well") to 3 ("I do not know this at all") to identify their priorities for an individualized unit of study.  After defining their chosen terms, students will find examples in poetry and then apply their new knowledge and understanding by using these poetic devices in original poetry of their own.

Following our short, introductory poetry study, students will use their MAP lexile ranges to choose novels for our historical fiction book clubs.  The literature selected will tie in with the upcoming study of the medieval period in social studies class.  This interdisciplinary unit will include our medieval feast field trip (all dressed in medieval costumes!) toward the end of February as well.

The advanced language arts students will integrate the independent poetry study into their ongoing literary terms project.  In addition to their College of William and Mary Persuasion unit of study, they will also participate in the interdisciplinary Middle Ages unit, choosing challenging historical fiction novels based on their MAP data and individual interests.

6th grade Spanish - Señora Murphy

he new year will be full of history adventures...

After leaving Ancient China we will travel back east, to the next great power of the Mediterranean World, Ancient Rome. Veni, vidi, vici! Julius Caesar uttered these famous words, “I came, I saw, I conquered”, to describe his victorious military conquest of Asia Minor. This month we are studying Ancient Rome and the impact that this great empire had on the ancient and modern worlds.

Gladiator fights in the Colosseum and chariot races in the Circus Maximus were some popular forms of Roman entertainment. We will look at the varying structures of the Roman government as it moved from a kingdom to a republic and then an empire. Along the way, many famous people were involved with the Roman Empire including Julius Caesar, Caesar Augustus, Marc Anthony and even Cleopatra. We will be discovering the many contributions to modern life given to us by ancient Rome, including our calendar and the names of the months “July” and “August”. Join us as we will finally be moving into discoveries of the Common Era, or C.E. (also known as A.D.)

Remember, all roads lead to Rome!

The 6th grade students completed their weather unit by creating a weather forecast using i-Movie. Check out our forecasts on the school website under WebLinks-Classroom WebPages. They turned our fantastic! The students utilized the vocabulary from this unit and the Titan Pad website to write the scripts they used for their broadcast. We finished our unit on body parts prior to winter break. Our culminating activity for this unit was for the students to to apply the new vocabulary terms they learned to create their own space alien. We also joined the 7th and 8th grade Spanish classes, at the Winter School Assembly, with singing “Frosty the Snowman.” The 6th

graders did a great job! We will be working on our vocabulary for different articles of clothing when we get back from break.

Unfortunately as the semester ends I have to say good-bye to my 6th grade Spanish students as they will moving on o French for the remainder of the school year. I have enjoyed having the chance to get to know your sons and daughters. Good luck in French! I would love it if you stop by for a visit!

Language Arts with Mrs. Clark and Mrs. MurphyIn vocabulary this month, students will continue to work with Greek and Latin prefixes, suffixes and base words to improve and

enrich their reading and writing skills. Currently, the classes are in the midst of a poetry unit. Students recently created keynote presentations about a poet to accompany our study of notable poets and their work. Along with studying various elements of poetry, students are learning how to write and read poetry with an understanding of poetic devices and figurative language. Students recently created an imitation poem following our study of Langston Hughes’s poem, “Theme for English B”. Excerpts from the novel Bronx Masquerade, by Nikki Grimes will accompany our study of different styles of poetry to add a modern flair.

Advanced Language Arts Students in Advanced LA are back to

contemplating the characteristics and ideals of a utopia! This month, famous poets like Emily Dickinson, William Butler Yeats and others will be our focus. The students will look at utopian connections in classic poetry, as well as the modern style highlighted in the novel Bronx Masquerade by Nikki Grimes. As the month continues, we will begin our next novel study, The House of the Scorpion, by Nancy Farmer. This gripping tale set in a futuristic dystopian society will have students delve into our 3rd quarter theme of ‘Empathy.’

All Students continue to work at their own pace with our differentiated

‘Independent Grammar Study.’ All the mini-lessons and activities the students complete are based on their individual needs and priority target areas!

7th Grade Math with Mrs. Curran

I hope you and your family had a wonderful winter break! Now that we are back, we are getting back on track.

Students in Pre-Algebra finished their Unit 7 study on two-step equations and inequalities just before winter break. They did an excellent job on solving these equations with the algebraic process. Even though we have finished the unit, these concepts will continue to be spiraled through review. The next unit they will be working on this month is on Geometry concepts. These concepts include a basic introduction to Geometry, transversals, angle measures, classifying triangles, and properties of quadrilaterals. They have taken a pretest to determine what is focused on as a whole group, as small groups, or as an independent study.

Students in Algebra 1(Advanced) are almost complete with their second part of the Geometry unit. This unit focuses on congruency, congruency statements for triangles, central angles, and creating circle graphs. The test on this unit will be on Tuesday, January 15th. The third part of the Geometry Unit will include transformations. A pretest will be given to determine what is focused on as a whole group, as small groups, or as an independent study. We are using the purple Pre-Algebra book to supplement these lessons.

7th Grade Science with Mr. A

This month our young scientists will be finishing up our study of

physics by exploring simple and compound machines. We will survey

how machines and technology have impacted our lives within the past

century and what types of alternative energies

may be used to power society in the future.

In the next few weeks, we will be moving on

to studying cells.  We will be conducting a lab

using eggs and vinegar to show how permeable a

cell’s membrane is and we will be conducting a

lunch lab to see how much fats, oils,

carbohydrates, and proteins are in our common

lunches. This will help our

young scientists learn more about the relationship

between an egg and animal cells and their various

organelles, osmosis, and diffusion, with their

relationship to our overall health.

In addition, we will utilize the microscopes to

create our own slides to view plant and animal cells

along with cheek cells and tastebuds. Later on we will study a bit more

with the processes of photosynthesis, respiration, and cell division.

7th Grade Social Studies with Mr. Colley

The students are finishing Chapter 2. They have learned how to talk about things they and others like and how to describe them.

The students will be starting a new chapter that is about discussing what they and their friends like to do and want to do. They will learn many "ar" verbs and how to conjugate them. They will be able to talk about everyday activities and how often they do them.

7th Grade Spanish with Senora Rus

As we begin a New Year we will be wrapping up our quarter theme of “Courage” with our Immigration unit and moving into our new theme of “Empathy”. With our Immigration unit we will be taking a virtual tour of Ellis Island, tracing the journey of some specific immigrant groups during the late 1800’s, as well as debating the current issue of immigration policies in our country.

When we move into our third quarter theme of “Empathy”, we will focus our attention on the issues of slavery both here in the the U.S. and around the world. We will trace the mistreatment of people groups throughout history and wrestle with the fundamental reasons why slavery has and still does exist.

7th Grade Guitars with Mrs. O’Reilly

7th Grade Handbuilding with Mrs. CavelloWe will be working with a lot of ideas, creativity and clay! Students will learn the basic hand building techniques: coil. slab and pinch. They will get their feet wet by first making a coil pot. We will explore making ceramic bowls with glass melted inside, and creating ceramic food...anyone hungary? We will also be using clay to create Pop Art portraits! I am really looking forward to their finished work!

7th GRADE GUITARSThese students have developed quite a large collection of chords, chord progressions and songs to add to their portfolios. We have played Em, E, E7, A, Am, A7, D, Dm, D7, G, C, B7 chords. We have also learned several melodies using the E and B strings. The Merry Men can be seen on their portfolio! The students have performed 2, 3, and 4 chord songs with their final performance being a song of their choice from a website of their choice. Being school appropriate, they are allowed to select a song that they have always wanted to play Acting as their guide I am able to assist wherever I’m needed while the students interpret the guitar music markings and teach themselves. Hopefully, this will allow them to carry on playing the guitar and learning the music they enjoy the most.

WITH MRS. FUNK

In January 8th grade algebra students will be completing their study of solving algebraic equations and beginning their study of ratios, proportions, square roots and finish the unit with the Pythagorean Theorem. Students will also be analyzing the validity of a claim found on a roll of wrapping paper about how many boxes it would wrap. This is a follow-up from the Best Gift Ever project that was completed at the end of December. As we started in December, students will be able to work at faster pace than I have established as long as assignments are being completed with all work shown correctly. Quizzes also may be taken ahead of the scheduled date as long as the student has successfully completed the preparation assignments.

In January the 8th grade advanced algebra students will be beginning their study of exponents and exponential functions including exponential growth and decay. Students will be able to see and discuss the results of the first semester exam on January 14th. Students will be given a letter on the same day detailing their progress in the class to date and what must be achieved on the second semester exam to be placed in accelerated or honors Geometry. Please refer to the course booklet students will be receiving on January 16th for the flow chart showing the sequence of math courses to be taken during their four years at L.T.

For those 8th graders who participated in the Math-A-Thon, pledge envelopes are to be returned no later that January 18th. In February I will be announcing the total raised by the 8th grade class. Thank you in advance for all of your support!!

with Mrs. Florek and Mrs. Schweizer

In January, students will be working on projects with Mr. Steele related to the Great Depression. Students will rotate between teachers:

Mrs. Florek’s classes will examine visuals and written information about social groups in America. Then they will portray the difficulties faced by the group in a mini-drama.

Mrs. Schweizer’s classes will “tour” the country to study the human impact of various regions during the Depression. Students will create a scrapbook for their studies and write a letter to Mrs. Roosevelt about their trips. We will continue our study of point of view in literature. A unit test is scheduled for the middle of the month. Eighth graders will study more Greek and Latin roots along with academic language and content vocabulary. As always please continue to encourage your child to read each day.

Advanced

The students are continuing the study of Billy Budd, Sailor by Herman Melville and discovering an understanding of different types of literature. We are continuing to investigate the threads of change in the 19th century. The students are working in groups to prepare a final project to teach to the class about one of the following: romanticism, transcendentalism, abolitionism, feminism, or industrialism. Each group will be not only exploring literature but also listening to music and looking at art that was important during that time. Please ask your child which group he/she is working in.

WITH MR. STEELE

In SOCIAL STUDIES, the 8th graders will spend the month of January beginning their study of the United States Constitution.

“We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

If you happen to hear your son or daughter singing, rapping, or simply reciting the above section of the Constitution, it is because we are now into the heart of our study of this important document. As part of their study, the students have to learn the Preamble, and so far, they have not only impressed me with their ability to understand the content, but also with their singing skills. We are currently studying the seven articles in the Constitution that set up our national government. We are learning about the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. After learning about the government, we will

move onto the amendments to see what changes have been made to this document over the years. By the time we finish, your son or daughter will be a Constitution expert! If you’d like to test your own knowledge of this founding document, click the link below to find out how much you know. Good luck!

In 8th grade science the students have just finished and investigation into how chemistry relates to global warming. Specifically, students looked at the affects of temperatures on common gases and

their resulting effect on the global climate. We will look at all views related to the topic and discuss whether or not we feel there is enough information and facts to support each claim. Using the periodic table with deeper understanding is the next stop. We will begin by investigating matter and how we can observe, measure, and change it physically and chemically. This will give the students a chance to see where the common elements come from, why they are located in a specific place on the table, and how they react to other elements. As well as how

reactions can be represented using chemical equations.

8th Grade Sculpture with Mrs. CavelloThis block students will be working with glass, plaster, wire and found objects! We will start out by looking at the work of Giacometti and his modern figure sculptures to inspire our first project. Students will also work with fusing and slumping glass. This is a new project this year, and earlier projects have come out great! The group project with a message will involve a variety of materials that students will use to convey their ideas through their art. They will then write an art statement to explain their work. Sculpture is a popular class, and the projects and idea that come from these classes are great!

In the French Classes…

The 6th grade French students will finish the current semester with a showing of the famous Jean Cocteau version of “La Belle et la Bête.” A new 6th grade French block will begin on January 14.

Seventh grade French students will be talking about their family members. They will put together a family journal featuring themselves and any five of their family members. Their family projects will then be displayed in the hallway around the 7th grade classrooms. The students will finish the month learning how to express school schedules and time in French, and compare the French and Canadian school systems to our own.

The eighth grade French students will be presenting their Paris monument projects on Friday, January 11. We will construct a mini-Paris in the classroom on this date, so the students can get a feel for the relative locations of these impressive monuments. The projects will then be on display both as you enter the Middle School and later in the library for the next few weeks. During the second half of January we will wind up our clothing unit with a mini fashion show, and start talking about one of our favorite things - food!

Wishing all a “Bonne Année” - Happy New Year!

FOCUS ON HEALTH

The 7th grade Health 2 classes have started off the block learning about the negative effects of tobacco use among teens and adults. The students split into groups to work on a tobacco research project about various areas of tobacco use and abuse. The students have gained an understanding of the negative effects associated with tobacco use, and how to educate others on how to quit using tobacco or to not even start using it in the first place. The students took part in a lab that simulated what it would be like to suffer from a smoking related disease. The lab opened the eyes of many students about the dangers and negative consequences of tobacco use. The classes will be moving onto a unit on alcohol use and abuse in the next few weeks.

The 8th grade Health 2 students recently completed a unit about tobacco use and abuse. The students reviewed the concepts they learned about tobacco from 7th grade, and built upon them through various discussions, videos, and

activities in class. Specifically, the students analyzed how the media influences tobacco use through advertisements and other hidden messages about tobacco. The students decided to take a stand against tobacco use in the U.S., and in turn wrote a persuasive letter to the Surgeon General about their concerns regarding tobacco use. The students used their skills from Language Arts class to construct the letters and form a polite argument for their letter to the Surgeon General. The 8th grade students will be reviewing alcohol use and abuse in the upcoming weeks. They will be creating various projects to reinforce the responsible decisions teens need to make in regards to alcohol use and abuse.

Did You Know...The overall story of the 2012 Monitoring the Future (MTF) Survey is that the use of most illicit drugs among the nation's teenagers are either holding steady from last year or showing some modest declines. In particular, marijuana use has stopped trending upward and synthetic marijuana did not show a rise this year, although it remains at high levels. Another exception to this generally positive story is the appearance of a turnaround in alcohol use among older teens.

Thanks to all who helped glaze the bowls for the upcoming Empty Bowls Dinner!

The physical education classes are currently in the middle of the basketball unit. The students have finished their skill development and have started playing half-court games. During game play, there is one team on the stage each day using the fitness equipment. On these days, students are required to wear heart rate monitors and must be in their target heart rate zone for a required amount of time to earn their points for the day. The unit will conclude with a written assessment. Physical education students have also recently participated in a number of fitness activities, including Billy’s Boot Camp, Ultimate Keep-Away, Speedball, Countdown Fitness, Pacer, and the push-up and curl-up tests. The next unit the students will be participating in will be badminton,

fitness, and team handball.

Congratulations to the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band and Orchestra for a giving a wonderful concert in December. You made some beautiful music together! I again want to congratulate the 8th grade band and chamber orchestra members who traveled to Bethlehem Woods to perform Christmas carols for the residents. The students played wonderfully and our music was well received by all who listened. LT Solo and Ensemble is now available on the school website and in the band room. All 6th, 7th and 8th grade band members can perform a solo or join with other band members to form an ensemble that performs at the solo and ensemble festival in March. All forms and applications are due to Mrs. Hardesty soon! Please see me if you are interested in participating. This will take place at LT South Campus on Saturday, March 9th from 8:30-12pm.

The Jazz Band will be participating in the Lyons Township Jazz Festival on February 27th . I am pleased to give the Jazz Band another outside opportunity to perform and receive comments this year. More details will be coming soon.
