Executive Director Report

Hello everyone I hope this newsletter fi nds you in good health.

I’m confi dent that the Anitua Group will be in a strong position to implement many of its growth strategies over the next two years, especially if we remain free of major incidents and pending matters outside of our control. We have been cash poor over the last two and a half years as the LNG project ramped up and required huge amounts of cash. This coupled with the buyout of our partner in The Alliance Group and the diffi culties in AMS forced Anitua to put on hold all of its planned growth strategies.

The good news is that the LNG project has peaked and cash should soon start fl owing from that major contract. The AMS contract has been resolved and with good management and attention to sound safety practises this company will start contributing to the Group’s bottom line.

I’m excited about the future of the Group when I see some of the opportunities in front of us and that we will fi nally be in a fi nancial position to take advantage of these.

Graham Potter has left us after doing a great job as GM of Anitua Security Services. Andrew Scottney-Turbill is Graham’s replacement. He is very systems orientated with vast experience in security and PNG. Andrew is settling into the role and will soon be implementing many of his planned strategies. Michael Warner is our new GM at Anitua Constructions and he has already built a great team around him. I’m very

keen to see where he might be able to take this company in 2013. Anitua Supermarket, Hardware and Lihir Autos had record sales in 2012. I expect 2013 will be another great year for retail although it is reasonable to expect that sales will drop off slightly for Lihir Autos given the wind down of Newcrest’s MOPU project. THINK SAFETYReport Hazards Quickly – It’s Your LEGAL Obligation

Many employees within the Anitua Group work directly or indirectly in the mining industry. Therefore, last month’s National Mining Safety Week celebrations and initiatives were a pertinent reminder of the importance of working safely EVERY day. An employee’s LEGAL obligation to work safely is outlined in various ways in the PNG Mines Safety Act including Section 45: Duty of Care: “Every person employed in or who works in a mine, who becomes aware of anything which is likely to cause injury, shall promptly report the fact to a person in authority immediately.” In short, reporting hazards quickly is YOUR legal obligation, as well as just one example of working safely. ‘Sefti Em I Namba Wan’

AMS Haul Trucks: As Good as New

Anitua Mining Services is currently rebuilding and doing an overhaul on its aged fl eet of four CAT 775 F haul trucks so that they are ready to be utilised for future projects. Check out the ‘Before’ and ‘After’ photos and you’ll agree that the results are nothing short of amazing.

Over the past two years the machines have been hauling material 24/7 under the harsh mine environment. Not surprisingly, they have succumbed to corrosion, wear and tear, as well as engine failures and a whole range of bumps, dents and scratches.

The work being carried out on the trucks includes taking off the panels, walkways and cowlings, removing the old paint and rust, as well as rebuilding the engines. The trucks will then be resprayed to their original colours and be in tip-top condition. The overhaul is being carried out at the Londo Maintenance facility with the fi rst truck taking approximately 3 months to complete and the second is close to being fi nished. The aim is to have all trucks completed by the end of the year – this is of course dependent on weather conditions and the availability of manpower.

AMS Maintenance Manager, Justin Walker, is proud of his qualifi ed and expert team of panel beaters, spray painters, mechanical and electrical tradespeople who are working on the trucks. “They’re doing a great job on not only making the trucks run effi ciently and look fantastic but most importantly, the work they’re doing now will ensure that the trucks run safely ” claims Justin.

AFTER: The same Haul Truck – Everything old is new again.

Executive Director Report continued ...

Our safety performance continues to be very good but we aren’t resting on that. We continue to improve and strengthen our systems and procedures and very shortly we will have a more unifi ed approach to safety across the entire group. Our Annual Safety Awards evening has already been locked in for the end of October. Overall, when it comes to safety I really do believe that at Anitua sefti em i namba wan!

Unfortunately, the Lihir Integrated Benefi ts Package review continues at a less than optimum pace and the sooner this is resolved the sooner it will compliment business opportunities on Lihir.

In summary, 2013 is shaping up as a very interesting year. It will present numerous opportunities as well as threats given that the IBP will be fi nalised, provincial elections are scheduled for June, LNG and MOPU are scaling down, Newcrest is tightening its belt, and we have seen confl ict at Zuen

on Lihir. I’m confi dent that we will do very well internally but these and other issues (outside our sphere of infl uence) could heavily impact our performance. Notwithstanding, I am excited about the opportunities for Anitua and with our employees’ and shareholders’ support, as well as a little luck we should be well positioned to reap the rewards of the last few years’ hard work.

Take care.

AMS RTO Accreditation

AMS is now accredited with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), Vertical Horizonz in Brisbane. Vertical Horizonz is in turn accredited by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) to provide a range of nationally recognised training and assessment solutions relevant to the mining, construction, and transport industries. What does this mean for AMS? Essentially, it means that AMS trainers will be able to run many more (RTO endorsed) courses on-site, such as:

4X4 Driver Training Defensive Driver Training RIIRIS301B - Apply Risk Management Processes RIIOHS301A - Conduct Safety & Health Investigations RIICOM302A - Communicate Workplace Information Forklift Training

These courses will be in addition to the following courses currently run by the AMS Training Department:

Confi ned Space Training Working at Heights JSA Permit User and Permit Accepter

Overall, the new accreditation is a fantastic achievement for the Training Department and AMS as a whole. AMS Training Superintendent Paul MacMillan says “it will mean more training, better training, and cheaper training ….. this is turn will

result in more highly skilled and safer working employees.” The

relationship AMS has with RTO Vertical Horizonz and therefore ASQA is a obviously a great result for AMS, its staff and its clients.

Pronto: We’ve Passed the Half Way Mark

Anitua Corporate Services and Anitua Property Services followed Anitua Supermarket, Anitua Hardware and Anitua Mining Services by switching over to Pronto in March. With fi ve out of nine Anitua businesses now utilising Pronto, Project Manager Leanne Baarslag and her team are beginning to see the light (albeit in tiny glimpses) at the end of the tunnel. “I’m sure we’ll have plenty of challenges to deal with as we plan and implement the roll out to the last four businesses but it sure does feel good to pass the half-way mark” says Leanne.

The fi nal stages of implemen-tation for each company, or a ‘Go Live’, is the culmination of around 6 months’ worth of planning and hard work involving both Pronto consult-ants and Anitua Team members. The implementation requires the team to work on Pronto whilst also completing their daily work. This is only achiev-able with the involvement and enthusiasm of the entire team. In many of our companies it means big changes but also big improvements in business process.

Another Hero at ARDS

In the last edition of Pulse we featured a story on ARDS employee, Tal Boyd, who gained hero status at the Haus Sik when he fi xed a generator during a black out and thus indirectly saved the life of a patient undergoing surgery.

It seems that ARDS has another hero in its ranks in Jayson Yandalla, HR Generalist and new transfer from AMS. Jayson recently found himself in a potentially dangerous situation when he happened to be in the vicinity of a violent assault that took place at work. His quick reaction, calm

attitude and high regard for personal values such as ‘Integrity’ and ‘Courage’ proved invaluable in this circumstance and reinforced his position as a valued member of the ARDS Team.

ARDS General Manager, Tony Collins, presented Jayson with an award in recognition of the assistance he provided stating “I’m very grateful for Jayson’s help from both a personal perspective as well as a work perspective. He was at risk of being injured himself but didn’t hesitate to help ….. he’s exactly the type of employee we want and value here at ARDS.”

Leanne is quick to thank everyone who has helped to make the changeovers so successful. “It’s been a real team effort ….. a change of software system is challenging on many levels not to mention exhausting ….. I’ve been very fortunate to have so many people putting in 100% on this project.”

Next in line for the Pronto changeover are Anitua Security Services who are busy preparing for their ‘Go Live’ in mid-April. They’ve worked extremely hard to get a system that suits their needs and Pronto is going to be a great asset to the business. ARDS and Anitua Constructions are just about to start on the journey and it is fantastic to see everyone from these companies eager to begin the implementation.

Change & Opportunity at Anitua Constructions

2012 saw numerous staff changes at Anitua Constructions which combined with new contracts available under the Tax Credit Scheme will bring plenty of opportunities. On the staffi ng front, long-term employee Michael Warner took over from Trevor Woodward as General Manager. Sadly, much loved and respected expat supervisor Gary Merchant passed away just before Christmas last year. Gary was heavily involved in the laying of the concrete slabs and the building of the chicken sheds on the Farms Project. Gary’s expertise and unique method of training is evident in the excellent work that the Concreting and Form Working teams are now producing. Gary will be greatly missed by everyone at Anitua Constructions.

Unlike early last year when numerous redundancies were made after the completion of Lakunbut Village Resort when the company found itself with few contracts to continue on with, this year several new appointments have been made. Andrew Sargent (Operations Manager) and Brian Alu (Stores & Logistics Manager) both of whom are from POM have brought a wealth of knowledge and expertise with them. Andrew has worked for some very large and successful companies including Steamships, AkzoNobel (Taubmans), Agility Logistics and Coca-Cola and says his motto is to “never say die and make sure I learn from any mistakes”. Brian, who commenced with the company last October and worked as the Stores Supervisor prior to his promotion, has a similar attitude and strong work ethic saying he “enjoys a challenge and giving his best.” Combined with additional internal appointments and two new expatriate staff to focus on training and meeting client expectations, Brian and Andrew will obviously have much to contribute.

GM Michael Warner and his more senior staff have been busy re-building relationships within Newcrest, showing

them that they can provide a full range of professional services within the building sector, as well as trying to expand Anitua Constructions’ client base. “We’ve also been busy introducing more streamlined processes and are changing our workplace culture. I’m confi dent that we’ve really turned a corner in this regard. Our staff have seen elements of the business gradually getting better and their morale, work attitudes and trust for new manage-ment have also improved” reports Michael.

In addition to the numerous staff changes and a healthier workplace culture, Anitua Constructions has recently secured two signifi cant contracts through the Tax Credit Scheme as well as various other smaller contracts that will keep them incredibly busy throughout 2013. The three main projects currently being undertaken are a refurbishment project at Lihir High School, construction of offi ces at the Petztormi Community Centre, and the fi nal stages of Hip Pocket’s new offi ce and warehouse.

One Little Piggy, Two Little Piggies, One Hundred & Eighty-One Little Piggies!

Lihir Integrated Livestock Ltd (LILL) manager and veterinarian Jovet Bacsain become a very proud ‘father’ in January, with the birth of not one little piggy, nor two or three, but 181! Most commercial farms experience a 10% mortality loss within the fi rst week of piglets being born but this is not the case with LILL. Jovet reports that he’s had a dedicated team of staff working around the clock to ensure none of the piglets die. “I really want to thank Kamilus Neun, Julius Salot, Stellard Waranamanil, Theonila Siftele and some of the Tulekta guys for doing such a good job looking after the piglets – I couldn’t have managed without them – they’ve been exceptional.”

Mark Soipang (Chairman, MRL & Director, The Anitua Group), Ben Misren (Chairman, LSDP & Director, LILL) and Executive Director

of the Anitua Group, Colin Vale, toured the Farm’s facilities and paid a special visit to the piglets. All were most impressed with the success of the breeding program with Mark Soipang commenting that “livestock production creates a long term sustainable revenue stream for Lihirians before and after the mine closes. Pigs are obviously central to many PNG customary practices and pork has been an important and highly prized protein source for many generations of Papua New Guineans and continues to be so.”

The farm stalled due to funding constraints but Anitua has taken over the management of the project at no charge in order to keep the project moving. Once permanent power and other utilities are connected the project will immediately commence egg production.

Anitua Security Services: Under New Management

Following the resignation of Graham Potter in January, Manager of Operations and Administration, Andrew Scottney-Turbill has been appointed as Anitua Security Services’ new General Manager. Executive Director of the Anitua Group, Colin Vale, says he’s “delighted with the appointment as Andrew not only has valuable knowledge and experience as an existing employee but he comes with a very strong background in security, aviation, and general management and previously held senior roles in the Australian military.”

Security services is a critical industry in PNG and Anitua is committed to consolidating ASSL’s position as a leading provider. Thus the appoint-ment of a new employee to fi ll the recently created position of ‘Manager, Sales & Business Development’ to assist Andrew in further growing and diversifying the business will be announced shortly.

Top Quality & Great Variety: Anitua Supermarket Butchery

If you’re after consistently good quality meat and plenty of different cuts then there is no other place to shop than the Anitua Supermarket. Under the watchful eye and careful stewardship of Australian trained and long-experienced butcher Joe Toliman, the staff is making plenty of customers very happy with their cuts of beef, pork, lamb, chicken and even seafood.

“We are really listening to what our customers want … it’s all about fresh, quality meat as well as variety” reports

Joe. We source our meat from several different suppliers both in-country (e.g., Rabaul’s famous Ulaveo beef) as well as from New Zealand (e.g., spring lamb) and Australia (e.g., chicken). The butchery staff are producing many different cuts now to what was previously available such as rolled roasts, fresh silverside, marinated, and tender fi llets of beef and legs of lamb (perfect for the family roast). They will soon be extending their smallgoods range to include kabana, smoked frankfurts, ham and bacon.

Staff are also able to prepare something especially for you (e.g., boned legs of marinated lamb, fresh chicken mince) including bulk orders if you give them some notice – just fi ll out the order book next time you’re in the store. One of Anitua Supermarket’s several trade qualifi ed butchers, the ever-smiling Pauline, is quick to point out “don’t forget just because it’s not in the display case does not

Preventing & Curing TB

Did you know that World Tuburculosis Day was on 24 March this year? And did you know that PNG has the second highest number of people with TB in the Asia-Pacifi c region? Every day in PNG people are dying from this dreadful but PREVENTABLE and CURABLE disease.

So how can we PREVENT TB?

Immunise your children

Ensure your house and workplace is well ventilated

Cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing

Do not spit in public places, or close to other people

How can we CURE TB?

Go to a medical centre as soon as you suspect you might have TB. (The sooner you start your medication, the better the chance you have of getting well again.)

Take ALL of your medication EXACTLY how and when the doctors tell you to. (Many people on TB medication start to feel better part way through their treatment and do not continue with it, only to relapse.)
