News from 1A44 Mrs. Winter’s KG Kids We have two new class pet gerbils, which needed to be adopted from the fourth floor. They are getting use to us and we have with hopes that they will soon let us hold them. We haven’t named them yet, but we are trying out some names to see if they fit. We know that they are mammals since they are covered with hair and that their mother took care of them when they were born. They also look like their mother as all mammal babies do, including us. This past week we added reptiles to our animal groups that we have studied. Zef has an iguana so he told us about how they feel and what some reptiles eat. We have learned We measured around the room with our feet. This week we’ll measure again with a standard ‘foot’. Learning to mark the length and move the foot takes some real coordination. Our photo gallery shows us measuring with our own foot. Have a look. The class eBook this week is about counting by 5s. We drew our families and counted their toes. Some families had 60 toes. Read the eBook and see if you recognize your family’s toes. Last week in Writer’s Workshop we posted a new chart that reminds writers what to do to make their writing easy to read. We are working on writing more letters, spacing our words, and forming our letters so others can read them. Peer editing also helps strengthen writer’s skills. We’ve also had a go at writing an information piece, expository writing. The kids wrote about what they learned in our Amazing Animal unit. You’ll see a sample later. We have two new class pet gerbils, which needed to be adopted from the fourth floor.

We have learned about how their habitat determines what they will eat and how they will survive.

Later in March we will do an animal research project. Watch for details.

We measured around the room with our feet.

On Friday, we will go on a field trip to the Lantern Festival. We will leave school at 8:30 and return around 1:00. Please be sure your child is wearing appropriate clothing and that he or she has enough to eat and drink. Email me or send a note if you would like to go. Just a reminder-parents and children must bring their drinks and snacks. We will not buy items while we are on field trips.

The 100th Day Collections were creative. We had everything from dinosaurs to beans. Thank you for supporting this math family project.

Again, thanks to all everyone for the support for the Red Market. The kids had a terrific time and the food was fantastic!

Just a heads up…each child will need a shoe box to do an animal research project later this spring. Save any shoe boxes you might have and send them into school.
