TRIVIA TIME OK, who thinks they’ve been around the club a long time? The photos of the two above are about 25 years old… Hint - they are currently board members. Hint #2 - they are married to each other. The hirsute goofball to the right once raced for an-other club and, in 1978, pre-sented ISC with the first Indy Cup, a challenge between the three bigger clubs in town. Hint - beer! TRIP IS FULL BUT THE WAIT LIST IS EMPTY. Chances are somebody will cancel.

the PREZ Speaks …. Paul Wood Summer 2011 has faded into the distance; fall is in full swing, and ski season just around the corner. Get those skis tuned at Sun Valley Sports, our new collaborative ski shop in Indy, and shop for some new gear. Let’s support Sun Valley and in turn Sun Valley will support and publicize the Club... we haven’t had this kind of collaboration since Sitz-mark.

Our new Facebook page is about to launch; it just needs Board approval (11/8). We anticipate that actively joining and participating with the so-cial media pool will spur some new interest from non Indy Ski Club members and maybe increase our membership. This in turn should add some new ideas for the Club and participation in Club activities. There are over a million people in and around this city, and I know there are a lot of skiers and boarders. We surely can and could attract a very small percentage of this pool if we just target the right media and con-tinue to offer excellent value. The general public, skiers specifically, do not know the Club exists.

What I have found during my tenure as President is that the Club offers exceptional ski trip values. We are entering new territory for social inter-action and Club activities. Today’s environment does not lend itself to one on one social activity; people are so busy and have so many choices of how they spend their time that the Ski Club just becomes an-other dot on their radar. It truly is tough to regain the vitality the Club once enjoyed, but none the less, the Board is trying and exploring ideas. What I do know is that there are a number of loyal members that want this Club to survive and prosper, and I will continue during my tenure to explore any ideas that can make that happen.

I hope each of you enjoy the Club and appreciate the value it offers, for truly it is a hidden “gem” in this city.

See you on the slopes, Paul

The Editor chimes in ……. Great article and a point that can't be repeated too many times.... I loved my rear-entry Salomon boots, they were extremely comfortable.... but they were so sloppy that my turns were always skidded no matter how I tried. At the end of the day I was bushed from working so hard. My current buckle boots are going into season ten and have about 500 days of skiing on them. The shells have been stretched three times and the liners are covered with duct tape and rubber shims. But…. they fit like a glove, and it takes little more than a thought to make my skis turn. I wear Cat Tracks to preserve the bottoms, so I can ski them at least one more season. Big difference! If you buy only one item of ski equipment, make it COMFORTABLE but well-fitting boots.

Indianapolis Ski Club Instructor Corner By Shawn Ansari, ISC instructor Did you know boots are the most important part of your ski set-up ?

Periodically I’d like to share ski related information that can help you improve your skiing and time spent on the slopes. The information may be news to some or simply a reminder to others. It is intended to help you, the club member, im-prove your skiing knowledge and enjoy your next trip on the mountain, more than ever before. Over the course of the last 25 years of teaching skiing I have come to appreciate how subtle changes can have a huge impact on ones skiing. One of the biggest concerns among skiers is the type of ski they are skiing on. I have found that my students are always interested in talking about the latest technologies developed by ski manufacturer and the shapes and lengths of their skis. Skis are very important and can help you make turns of various shapes and radius, they can be the difference between going fast or slow, or maintaining better balance in fresh deep snow. However, what is seldom a topic of conversation and is even more important than your ski type is your boots and how they fit your feet. After all, skis can’t turn on their own, can they? It is you, the skier, that transfers energy to the skis by tilting, rotating, pressuring, and ultimately guiding them to turn. Often this is only possible when you make small tiny movements in your boots. Every move by you is translated to the skis through your boots! Therefore, how you are set up in your boots directly affects how effectively you can control your skis – no matter what type of skis you own! When I teach a class, whether it is beginner or advanced, I always check the student’s set-up in their boots. Comfort is important, and boot comfort is best left to a professional fitter. However, it is equally as important that the skier have a snug fit around his/her feet each time they plan to ski. This usually means when you are standing tall on your skis with your boots on, bending your knees forward and pushing your shins against the front cuffs, you should be able to put only two fingers down the back side of the boot behind your calves. Of course you also need to make sure your feet are snug without any slipping side to side, while you are still able to “wiggle” your toes freely. These are simple tests that you can do to ensure a snug boot fit. With a proper fit the movements from the lower part of your legs can most efficiently be transferred to your skis through your boots. The better the fit in your boots the more precise you will be in moving and controlling your skis. Once you have mastered your boots set-up then you can really explore and experience the entire range of motion that your particular skis are designed to deliver. So, the next time you are gliding down a run, check to be sure your boots fit snugly. Take a few runs and re-check them again. Sometimes minor adjustments are needed after you have warmed up and worked up a sweat or when the outside weather and temperature change dramatically. As active club members, please look for opportunities on many club trips to take a lesson from one of our experienced PSIA certified instructors. Go with a Pro!
