University Students Protest to Demand Student Unions Elections
A huge protest took place yesterday in front of the cabinet headquarters as more than 3000 students from over 12 universities around the country marched to demand setting a date for holding student unions elections. A delegation of three students representing the protesters will meet Minister of Higher Education Dr. Hassan Khaled to put forward their demands.
Students erected a stage in front of the cabinet building while security forces prevented
them from entering the street near the People’s Assembly. Students presented three major demands; first, opening the door for holding student
unions elections next week after the elections were postponed for a full academic term. Second, issuing a ministerial decree to establish Egypt’s Student Union comprising representative from each university. Third, presenting the set of regulations of the student unions to the parliament for approval.
Students protesting declared their refusal of the statement made by the Ministry of
Higher Education and they demanded an official decree that guarantees the fulfillment of their demands instead of a rhetorical statement.

Disagreements among Political Forces on Deals with Ex-Regime’s Tora Inmates
Reactions varied to the proposals made to strike deals with former regime figures, who
are imprisoned in Torah, to return some of the country’s stolen funds in exchange of dropping some of the charges against them.
The Freedom and Justice Party, political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood, confirmed
that these deals are unacceptable. Al-Nour Salafi Party refused any attempts of reconciliation with figures of the former regime that corrupted political life in the country for decades. On the other hand, Al-Wafd Party said that reconciliation is possible only in charges related to financial corruption because it will be in the benefit of the society.
Ali Fath Al-Bab, majority party leader in the Shoura Council, confirmed that negotiating
with former regime figures to return the stolen funds cannot be done because money will be recovered in any way when they receive sentences. “If we did this, then anyone will commit whatever crimes he wants, then pays some money to gain his freedom,” said Fath Al-Bab.
