DSE turnover tumbles to six-month low

Turnover on Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) stood at Tk254 crore, slumping further by about
10% over previous day’s mark of Tk281 crore
The daily trade volume on the country's prime bourse yesterday dip to a six-month low as the
investors preferred sidelines to observe the stock market.
Turnover on Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) stood at Tk254 crore, slumping further by about
10% over previous day’s mark of Tk281 crore.
It was the lowest single-day transaction since May 14 this year, when the turnover totalled a
record Tk 251 crore.
Meanwhile, the key index of Dhaka bourse, DSEX, ended flat yesterday after a big loss in the
previous sessions as investors showed some positivity following the news of finance
ministry's approval of requested fund for the investments in listed securities.
Yesterday’s session started with a sharp fall in index due to intense sell pressure from the
investors. However, it bounced back in the last two hours as investors showed some interest
to engage in buying sector specific stocks following the positive news.

DSEX closed at 4,417.9 points yesterday after losing 0.04% during the session. Meanwhile,
the port city bourse Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also slipped into red. The CASPI, the
main index of CSE, yesterday lost 0.01% to close at 13,440.4 points.
DSE Shariah-based index DSES declined 0.84% to end at 986.5 points, while blue-chip
index, DS30, went down by 0.64% to close at 1,498.7 points.
Market analysts and insiders said that the investors had been suffering from a lack of
confidence for long while disappointing data on major macroeconomic indicators were
dampening investors’ confidence badly.
Concerns over negative export growth, soaring non-performing loans (NPLs) and decreasing
private sector credit exacerbated the ongoing confidence crisis among retail, institutional and
foreign investors alike, they also said.
UCB Capital Management Ltd in its daily market commentary said that a group of investors
were still having bearish outlook while others were viewing market as cheap. Investors’
activities were mostly concentrated on General Insurance and Pharmaceutical Sector. General
insurance advanced by 2.06% while pharmaceutical was down by 1.76%. Meanwhile,
Telecommunication sector continued to take toll of ongoing dispute with the regulator.
EBL Securities in its daily market commentary said investors participation took a hit because
of morbid last session as total turnover was 10% less than previous session. The general
insurance sector led the sector-wise turnover board.
Square Pharmaceuticals secured the leadership position on the top turnover chart with a
turnover of Tk9.4 crore with its share price closing at Tk182.4 per share.
The stock was followed by Beacon Pharmaceuticals with Tk8.7 crore, Bangladesh National
Insurance with Tk8.2 crore, Ring Shine Textiles with Tk8.2 crore and Standard Ceramic
Industries Ltd with Tk7.4 crore.
Al-Haj Textile Mills secured the highest gain of 9.6% during the session. The stock was
followed by Saiham Cotton Mills with 8.6%, Bangladesh National Insurance Company with
8%, Golden Harvest Agro Industries with 7.9% and Central Pharmaceuticals Ltd with 7.8%.
Shepherd Industries Ltd turned out the worst loser with its price declining by 5.9%. The stock
was followed by Jute Spinners with 5.8%, Ambee Pharmaceuticals with 5.7%, Monno Jute
Stafflers with 4.6% and Square Textile Ltd with 4.1%.
Among the traded issues 203 gained, 94 declined and 56 remained unchanged during the
session in Dhaka Stock Exchange while 119 gained, 77 declined and 34 remained unchanged
in Chittagong Stock Exchange.
The Dhaka Stock Exchange currently has a market capitalization of Tk337,369 crore with the
benchmark index, DSEX, down by 17.97% since the beginning of this year.
