Charles E. Culpeper FoundationScholarships in Medical Science
The Rockefeller Brothers Fund iscurrently accepting applications for its2002 Charles E. Culpeper Scholar-ships in Medical Science Program, de-signed to support the career develop-ment of academic physicians.
Up to 4 awards of $100,000 per yearfor 3 years will be made to US medicalschools or equivalent US educationalinstitutions on behalf of candidateswho are US citizens or aliens who havebeen granted permanent US residence(proof required); who have receivedtheir MD degree from an educationalinstitution equivalent to a US medicalschool in 1993 or later (except underextraordinary circumstances, as ap-proved by the Fund before submittal);and who are judged worthy of supportby virtue of the quality of their re-search proposals. No institution maynominate more than one candidate.
In selecting awardees, emphasis willbe on identifying young physicians
with clear potential for making sub-stantial contributions to science as aca-demic physicians. Since January 1988,45 physicians have been selected asCharles E. Culpeper Medical Scholars.
Deadline for applications is August15, 2001. Awards will be announced inJanuary 2002, for activation on orabout July 1, 2002. International Klosterfrau Awardfor Childhood Asthma 2001
The Klosterfrau Research Award forChildhood Asthma is an annual prizeto be awarded to researchers in basicscience, pneumology, and pediatricswhose work is oriented to the betterunderstanding of childhood asthma.
Forty thousand Swiss francs will beawarded to one person or team, withthe stipulation that 30,000 Swiss francsbe spent for further research.
General Guidelines: (1) The appli-cant must be <40 years of age. (2) Thework must be from the past 2 yearsand may be clinical or basic research inasthma by a researcher whose majorclinical training and work has been inpediatrics. (3) The applicant must sub-
mit a summary of his/her work, withan indication of its clinical relevance tochildhood asthma and which questionsarising from the work need to be an-swered in the future. (4) Reviews ofthe literature will not be accepted. (5)A universal application form should beused and must contain:
•Title and full address•Manuscript(s)•A summary of the work•CV and list of publications•Explanations (by the applicant and
the head of the research group that theapplicant has performed the majorityof the research)

Selection of award recipients(s) willbe made by a board made up of 6 inter-nationally recognized senior scientists.
