During the hot summer months, many people look for
ways to beat the heat. There are several ways you
can keep your home cool and save money on your en-
ergy bills when it is hot outside.
▪ You may be able to enhance air conditioning with
the use of fans. Fans create breezes and move air
from one area to another. They also move heat
away from your body and help cool you by evapora-
ting sweat.
▪ Using fans during mild weather and at night can
save up to 50 percent in cooling costs and reduce
the need to use an air conditioner.
▪ When using an air conditioner, do not set the
thermostat lower than desired temperature. The
recommended temperature is 78 degrees.
▪ Using a fan with the air conditioner can help bet-
ter circulate the cooler air.
▪ Drink lots of water and wear short sleeved, loose,
light colored clothing.
▪ Make sure lights are turned off in unoccupied
rooms. Turn off tvs when no one is in the room
watching them. Put computers and monitors to
sleep when not in use.

Summer Safety Tips
Summer time is play time. Kids are out of
school and outside playing ball, swimming,
biking and hiking. The summer also is a time
when children wind up in the emergency room
due to accidents, so it is important that par-
ents make sure children play safe.
Children should always wear helmets when
biking and skating and protective gear when
playing sports like baseball and soccer.
The summer sun is inviting, but it poses a
danger to your health. Sunburns, dehydration
and skin cancer can occur from over-
exposure to the sun’s heat and damaging ultra-
violet radiation.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services recommends limiting exposure to the
sun during the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00
p.m., as this will minimize exposure to harmful
ultraviolet radiation.
Good hydration is important, especially for
children and elderly. Prevent dehydration by
drinking cool water or mineral-rich sports
drinks before going outside and regularly while
you are outdoors.
BBQ grills should only be used outside in an
open area, well away from buildings and out
from under eaves or over hanging trees. Keep
children and pets away from grill area.
Fireworks can result in severe burns, scars and
disfigurement that can last a lifetime.
Should you have any safety or security questions
or concerns, contact Safety & Security at 928-
2660.
Tornadoes are funnel shaped clouds that
form under thunderclouds and contain rapid-
ly rotating air.
• Most tornadoes form from severe thun-
derstorms. Hurricanes can also produce
tornadoes.
• Tornado winds may exceed 300 miles
(480 kilometers) per hour.
• Tornadoes can lift cars, mobile homes,
and animals into the air.
• Tornadoes are sometimes called
"twisters."
• The damage path of a tornado is usually
less than 1600 feet wide.
• Most tornadoes move at less than 35
miles per hour.
• Most tornadoes last only a few minutes.

On Wednesday, June 12, 2013 the Newport News Redevelopment and Housing Authority hosted their 2nd
Annual Father’s Day Program at the Marshall Courts Recreation Center from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Father’s
Day 2013 is a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Fatherhood Initiative which seeks
to uplift the importance of having fathers involved in the lives of their children.
Father and children enjoyed the educational and social activities. Activities included a guest speaker, commu-
nity resources, health screenings, food and drinks.
The children also had the opportunity to make Father’s Day cards on the computer in our Neighborhood Net-
work Lab and each child had a photo taken with their father.
Partnering agencies included the Boys and Girls Club of Virginia Peninsula, The Family Center of Hope, Center
for Child and Family Services, Peninsula Worklink, Peninsula Health District, Big Brothers Big Sisters, WIC
Office and Hope In-Home Care and Planned Parenthood.
