  • From The Minister

    July and August 2016

I shall be ready for our holiday; ready to profit from some relaxation and refreshment. More significantly, however, I shall appreciate being beside the sea. Despite everything that I treasure about being in Cambridge

the one thing that I would find better still would be proximity to the coast.

Perhaps John Keats speaks to me and for me in his poem, On the Sea, penned at the beginning of his holiday on the Isle of Wight in 1817.

It keeps eternal whisperings around Desolate shores, and with its mighty swell

Gluts twice ten thousand Caverns, till the spell Of Hecate * leaves them their old shadowy sound.

Often 'tis in such gentle temper found, That scarcely will the very smallest shell

Be moved for days from where it sometime fell, When last the winds of Heaven were unbound. Oh, ye! who have your eyeballs vexed and tired,

Feast them upon the wideness of the Sea; Oh ye! whose ears are dinned with uproar rude,

Or fed too much with cloying melody--- Sit ye near some old Cavern's Mouth and brood,

Until ye start, as if the sea nymphs quired!

    * Hecate Greek goddess of the moon,

and therefore in control of the twice-daily tides

hisuse of onomatopoeia, those words which sound like the thing they are describing; in his first eight lines there are some twenty six s or sh sounds,

    it.

  • forever-changing profile. A fortnight of sand between the toes and breeze-tousled locks, of no diary, no mobile and no email, will refocus the eyes and retune the ears, so that for the coming year I can yet again embrace the gift that ministry is.

in a watery sense. They also afford more opportunity than do hectic lives to feast upon God in Christ - the God of who hymn writers say:

    John Mason 1646-94

    F. W. Faber 1814-63

And how necessary that focussing on God is. As he drinks in the seascape, Keats uses language in the nineteenth century that seems so accurate a description of the impact life can have upon us in the twenty-first. We can so often be cast down by TV coverage of indiscriminate terrorism and of

    - yet- unknown implications of artificial intelligence, or by those personal problems that few

Christians, it seems to me, are not those who are exempt from these things,

challenges, know the difference it makes to feast upon the wideness of that sea

-to-earth yet not-quite-what-you-expect wisdom for the questions and dilemmas that confront us at home, in the workplace and the academy.

find helpful. Equally, we may find in the sea a profound analogy for the God

  • are forever around the shores of our lives, when they are difficult and when they are delightful. I hope that this summer you, with Bethan, Jess and me, will have some moments to hear those whisperings be they of the sea or of God and feel their lasting benefits.

    COULD YOU BE A NIGHTOWL?

NightLite operates on a Saturday night from 10 pm 4 am in our chapel and offers care and counsel, a listening ear and practical help to hundreds of people out in Cambridge during the night time hours either enjoying themselves or working. The team aims to assist anyone in need regardless of who they are. Below are some of the comments which have been received back from people who have used the service:

  • -you for looking after my son and for calling the paramedics. It turned out his drink had been spiked with something and so he was

on at 9.30 pm to set up the chapel. Doors open from 10, and by 3.30 or so, packing up has usually commenced. Training is provided for new volunteers and frequency of volunteering can be as little or as often as you like, with some volunteers on the rota once every 4 or 6 weeks and others more frequently. There's an arrangement with the car park opposite for NightLite volunteers to park free.

For more information, please contact Augur Pearce or Yvonne Norgett.

  • 125 Weekend 11th and 12th June

The second of our 125th Anniversary weekends was a great success, with an informative and inspiring emphasis upon St Columba, whose day was two days earlier, on 9th.

Voices combined to offer a fascinating Lecture/Recital. Although other professional engagements prevented Ian de Massini from being there, his hand was more than evident. It had been his initiative, and his work with

preparation of the music, fashioned an event of real insight and enjoyment.

St Andrews, The Very Revd Dr Ian Bradley, preached and opened up the

Brian Watkins, who played an imaginative selection of music influenced by his recent and serendipitous holiday in Scotland.

to welcome them, as well as friends from Fulbourn. Afterwards we joined together for lunch, which was masterminded by Daphne Thomas, tirelessly assisted by a large team of helpers, including the extra-mile-going Elaine Barker; we thank them all, as well as the many elders and members who organised and provided the delicious fare.

    we thank him, too.

  • Referendum Hustings

On the evening of Sunday 5 June, some fifty people gathered in St

Knowing that we were being invited to vote upon the simple question,

we welcomed four speakers, two advocating Leave and two Remain. The leavers were Cllr Tom Hunt, a Conservative member of East Cambridgeshire District Council, representing Ely South ward, and Nick Clarke, erstwhile Conservative leader of Cambridgeshire County Council, and more recently a UKIP candidate for the Police and Crime Commissioner for Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire. The remainers were Vicky Ford MEP, and Dr Rupert Beale, a scientist based both at the University of Cambridge and at Addenbrookes Hospital.

Questions had been received in advance, and covered topics like migration, climate change and the economy, and more philosophically, the common good. The meeting was chaired by Lord Wilson of Dinton; Richard is a former Cabinet Secretary (1998-2002) and latterly Master of Emmanuel College (2002-2012). We might perhaps measure the success of the evening by reporting that one person has told me that the discussion helped him to decide which way to cast his vote.

The photograph shows the gathering, with the speakers at the far end, from left to right:
