The quality and eagerness of our young members show they are thankful to be endodontists and are willing to give back to the specialty that makes their careers so rewarding. Howard Fine was elected this year to represent ADA District 2 as a Trustee and will join Charles Siroky and Greg Chadwick as endodontists serving the interests of all dentists in managing the affairs of the ADA. The 1997 ADA House of Delegates included 17 delegates and 11 alternate delegates who are endodontists. We need the rational and learned voices of endodontists to be heard when important issues affecting the preserva- tion of our specialty arise. Access to and availability of the highest quality of endodontic care will continue to be influenced in the foreseeable future by government and educational policies, public awareness, competition, demographics, and managed care. Are you secure in the representation of endodontics on issues that could affect your future? Do you consider your opinion valuable? Who will be making these decisions that affect your future ten years from now? Why not you? Now is the right time for you to get involved by seeking opportunities and declaring your desire to serve. Your study club, your university, your ADA component and constituent societies, and the AAE offer excellent avenues to begin your leadership journey. Step up today. Together, we can keep our specialty strong and viable forever.

A Message From Our President Carl W. Newton, DDS, MSD

Your Leadership Can Affect Our Future

Endodontics was the last specialty to be recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA). As an endodontist, I have observed other dental organizations undergoing the process of recognition without success. I now have a new appreciation and respect for the privileges and obligations I enjoy as a result of the hard work of our first generation endodontists. Their diplomatic approach to documenting criteria and influencing support for endodontics among ADA delegates deserves to be remembered by those of us who have only known an established specialty.

In 1943, 19 dentists met in Chicago to organize a society for the study of root canal therapy, known now as the American Association of Endodontists.

In 1957, one year after the American Board of Endodon- tics (ABE) was organized, the AAE filed an application for the recognition of endodontics as a specialty with the ADA. By this time, the AAE membership was 609. A survey of 41 US dental schools indicated that ten had endodontic departments.

In 1958, the ADA imposed a one-year moratorium on recognition of new specialties before endodontics had a chance to be recognized. The ABE submitted a second application for recognition in 1961, which was reviewed by the ADA Council on Dental Education and turned down. It was submitted yet again in 1962 when membership was up to 842.

In 1963, the ADA recommended that endodontics be recognized as a specialty. Revered mentors such as Dr. Maynard Hine, ADA President; Darl Ostrander, ADA Speaker of the House; and Harry Healey, ADA delegate, spoke fervently for recognition at the ADA House of Delegates meeting. All three were past presidents of the AAE. Their leadership helped pass the ADA House of Delegates' Resolution 35, "Resolved that endodontics be recognized as a special area of dental practice." Dr. Hine later said, in all humility, that his role was being in the right place at the right time, recognizing and acting on the issue at hand.

In 1966, the AAE Endowment and Memorial Foundation, now the AAE Foundation, was incorporated to support research and educational programs. Over the last two years, the AAE Foundation's leadership has received pledges totaling $8.4 million from AAE members and the dental industry to create an endowment to further support endodontic research.

The lessons and legacies are obvious to me and are still valuable to all of us today. Our specialty was born because

of committed members who aspired to leadership positions within the AAE and the ADA. The specialty of endodontics thrives today because the AAE accepted responsibility for the research that continues to document the unique skills, additional body of knowledge, and the need and demand for endodontists. Yet these needs cannot be met without a continued development and growth of volunteers.

Our early leaders earned authority and trust after their many years of commitment and involvement. They started by seeking or accepting positions in which their skills were needed to manage the business of dentistry or endodontics on a local level, in a component or constituent society, or at their university.

Membership in the AAE now exceeds 5,000. Opportuni- ties for aspiring endodontic leaders are plentiful. The AAE alone requires nearly 250 member volunteers for officers, directors, committees, and Affiliate positions. I received the names of 115 members recommended for 39 vacancies for the 1998-99 standing committee assignments. When asked to serve, all new members enthusiastically agreed.

Notes from Here and There AAE Member Dr. John D. West recently spoke to the Endodon- tic Diploma Students at the University of Toronto, Canada. Dr. West presented a seminar on endodontic excellence and also worked with the students in the clinic and tried to teach them "some of his magic." Dr. West is pictured at right with endodontic students, clinic staff, and several of the instructors from the University of Toronto.

Sutalo, CES president; Michael Tagger; Vera Coklica, AAE Member and president of the European Society of Endodontology (ESE); and I. Anic, CES secretary. The Ninth ESE Congress will be next October in Zagreb, Croatia.

In Memoriam AAE Member Dr. Leslie A. Morgan of Gresham, Ore., passed away in April. Dr. Morgan earned his DDS from Oregon Health Sciences University in 1979 and his certificate in endodontics from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio in 1984. An assistant professor of endodontics at Oregon Health Sciences University, Dr. Morgan achieved Diplomate status from the American Board of Endo- dontics in 1990.
