Margaret Haney CPS/CAP President, Memphis Chapter 2002-2003

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Our August membership meeting was great! Stephanie Moreno CPS did a fantas-tic job showing us what the International Convention and Educational Forum is all about.

At our September meeting the Executive Director of the Juvenile Diabetes Foun-dation will present our program. This should be very interesting and informative.

Doris Goode and I will be headed toward Winston-Salem, NC on Thursday, Sep-tember 26. The Southeast District Conference will be held September 27-29 at the Adam’s Mark Winston Plaza Hotel in Winston-Salem. Ollie Jo Bozeman CAP, our new International President, will preside at the Business Session. Doris and I will have the opportunity to attend workshops dealing with workplace tension and strategies for professional women. The theme for this conference is “Nothing could be finer than to be in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in September 2002!”

Don’t forget that our Executive of the Year event is in October. The form to nominate your executive is in the newsletter. Fill it out and submit it to Dorothy Conner.

Our Executive Appreciation Breakfast will be held October 16, 2002. Phillip Austin is planning another great breakfast so don’t fail to get your reservation made. The reservations form is included in this newsletter. Remember that Through Teamwork We Gain Success.

FROM THE EMPLOYMENT CORNER—Ludora Coo-per CPS, Chairperson: OR Nurses, Inc., a staffing service for doctors and nurses is located on Wolfcreek Parkway near the Wolfchase Mall. They are looking for a full-time Administrative Assistant to cover their front office. Very visible position, greet visitors, handle paperwork for employees. Will assist Office Man-ager, maintain supplies, need good organizational skills, filing, detail oriented and proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel. Major medical and dental—100% paid for single cov-erage. Starting salary range: $30,000.

If interested please forward your resume to Denise Burnett via e-mail at [email protected].

CAN I HAVE A TWIST WITH THAT? - Doris Goode CPS, Chairperson:

Be sure to bring lots of $$$ to the next meeting! We’ll be doing the 50/50 with a new twist. For just $5.00, we will be using “nose to knees.” That means that however many tick-ets stretch from the tip of your nose to your knees is how many you can get for your $5.00. Of course, if you don’t want to spend your whole $5.00, you can still purchase sin-gle tickets for only $1.00 each.

MEMBERSHIP—Sharon Gardner, Chairperson

It is always exciting to welcome new members to the Mem-phis Chapter! Each one of you brings new talents and skills to the organization, and we look forward to working with you. The wide variety of opportunities and activities allows each of us to be involved. You may have even heard some of us say, “Until I took an active role in IAAP, I never felt a part of the chapter.” Contact any of the officers, directors, or committee chairs if you see an area where you would like to be involved. Jump on it—the water is warm!

While we take pride in our membership “numbers” we are saddened to lose members and we would appreciate your sug-gestions on how we can improve in this area.

In comparing our records with International’s, I have found many of our addresses and phone numbers are outdated at Headquarters. Please let Kay Cullen, Trudy Noyes, or me know when you have a change in your pertinent information. You may also go to the website and make your changes on-line, or email [email protected]. We aren’t trying to be nosy—we just want to keep you informed on your chapter events!

Here’s to a great year of fun and fellowship!

New Members and Information Changes

SEPTEMBER 2002 PAGE 5 NEWS ‘N’ VIEWS

Please join me in welcoming these new additions to our Memphis Chapter IAAP!

Gayden Craig—new e-mail address is [email protected].

Ludora Cooper—Ludora has moved to Rhodes College in the last week. She says she thinks she will love her new job. Her new information is: P: 901-843-3848 F: 901-843-3474 E-mail: [email protected]

In Our Prayers….. It is with utmost sorrow to inform you that the Memphis Chapter lost two dear friends this past month. Nancy Cum-mins CPS passed away earlier this month, losing a battle with cancer. Nancy was a member of the Memphis chapter since 1987 and was employed by Buckman Laboratories.

Nancy Allison, former member of the Memphis Chapter, also lost her battle with cancer earlier this month. She devel-oped pneumonia on top of her condition. Nancy had joined the chapter back in 1994 and was part of many committees. Nancy had retired during her illness from Smith & Nephew, where she worked for Larry Papasan.

Our thoughts and prayers reach out to their families in their time of sorrow.

Times Change….And So Does Your Boss With today’s rapidly changing workplace, we can expect that we’ll be working with a number of new executives over the course of our career. No need to panic and worry about how you will be perceived by the new person in charge. In-stead, get out of your comfort zone and stop focusing on “the way you’ve always done it.” Instead, show your enthusi-asm, hone your adaptability, and welcome new ways to accomplish work goals.

Find out as much about your new boss as you can. Look for indicators of work style and preferences. Seeing a copy of their resume is a good place to start. Read any articles that the new person may have written or articles written about them.

Organize the office area. This is a good time to clean outdated files, pull together a procedures manual, update the organizational chart and contact infor-mation for employees, vendors, and clients.

Don’t assume. Wait until you meet the new person before you order office supplies and reorganize their work area. Get input first.

Anticipate what the new person will want/need. A notebook with copies of the minutes for the last two years is helpful, as is a summary of the progress re-ports for all current department projects.

Take a good hard look at yourself and your work-space. Have you kept up with the times? Sign up for

a PowerPoint course or send away for a self-study module on improving your writing skills. Does your workspace project a professional image of someone who is efficient, organized, and striving for excel-lence or does it indicate a preoccupation with your family, negative humor, or objects of outside interest that are better off shown elsewhere?

Call the new person and introduce yourself. Ask if there is anything you can provide them before the first day in the office. Offer a welcome and express your flexibility to adapt to their work style. Under no circumstances should you engage in spreading ru-mors or relating your concerns or fears to co-workers about the new person or the upcoming change, as it would likely get back to them. Don’t damage your relationship before it begins.

Think positive and see this as a new opportunity to learn, grow, and be part of a successful work team. This could be your time to shine.

News from the Southeast District

Barbara Carter CPS/CAP was elected as our Southeast Dis-trict Director at the 2002 International Convention and Education Seminar in Nashville, Tennessee last month. What a thrill it was to hear the report from our very own Gary Brackett CPS, Tellers Director, that Barbara had been elected to this position.

Our new SED Director is employed by ALSTOM Power, Inc. as the General Manager’s Executive Administrative Assis-tant, and has been employed with them for 35 years!

Barbara attained her CPS rating in 1985 and completed her CAP in May, 2001. She recertified in 1995 and 2001, and is also a certified ISO internal auditor.

Her IAAP background includes serving at all levels on her chapter board and she continues to be very active with the Chattanooga Chapter. She served as Tennessee Division President in 1995-96 (and received the 1996 International President’s “Outstanding Division President Award”) after serving in three other offices. Barbara served as the South-east District Member of Institute for Certification IAAP

SEPTEMBER 2002 PAGE 6 NEWS ‘N’ VIEWS

Focus Group (’99-’01), 1997-98 Retirement Center Trust Com-mittee, and numerous other vol-unteer capacities within IAAP over the years.

As a very inexperienced members several years ago, I looked at Barbara and listened to her with respect and awe. I always wondered how she could be so cool, calm, collected, and knowledgeable at the same time. At the 1996 Tennessee Division Annual Meeting (held in Mem-phis), I was so impressed with her grace and dignity dur-ing a very difficult banquet and awards ceremony...you see, there was a very large party next door to us—and did they party! Barbara continued to preside and never was a feather ruffled.

I have had the opportunity to serve with her for two years on the Division Board and I learned so much from her. She will make an excellent Director.

Please join me in congratulating Barbara!

Corporate Headquarters—One Year Later

The events of September 11, 2001 affected many people, many lives, as well as many different types of families. You probably know someone in your IAAP family whose life took a turn as a result of that day.

A flagpole and memorial plaque was recently installed at IAAP Headquarters to commemorate administrative professionals and their family members who lost their lives during those tragic events of September 11, 2001. IAAP members contributed over $4,500 toward the cost of this project. A brief dedication ceremony will be held at Headquarters from 9:00 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. on September 6, 2002, followed by an Open House and tour of the building until approximately 10:00 a.m. All members are wel-come to attend.

Reported from the IAAP website

KAREN’S KORNER Well, it has been an exciting month! The kids are all back in school, the supply shelves are emptied, and many are waiting for the much-anticipated cooling in the air that should come sometime in the month of September.

Don’t forget—if you are seeking your CPS/CAP certification, the deadline for the November exam is September 1st! You can obtain complete details on the IAAP website of www.iaap-hq.org.

Our new officers and committees are well in place and charg-ing forward with their respective projects. The Executive Breakfast is just around the corner, on October 16, 2002. Make sure you reserve your spot at this special event.

Be on the lookout for information coming up on this year’s Margarette Bibb Event, to be held on November 11, 2002. The planning is running at full speed, and I’m told by the committee that we should have the details soon!

The scary part about mentioning these two events is that once they’re over, we’ll be talking of the holiday season and Christmas! I don’t know if I’m ready for that…
