The IBM faithful made their annual pilgrimage to Orlando FL in late January for IBM Connect — the event formally-known-as Lotusphere. While IBM’s focus continues along the “Social Business” path set last year, there were a few interesting announcements around IBM Sametime — in capabilities, partnerships, and how it intertwines with Social Business. These specifically surround 1) rationalizing / unifying two disparate web conferencing capabilities; 2) audio conferencing integrations; 3) software MCU; and 4) Sametime — IBM Connections integration.

What Andy Thinks: First up is a unification of the “meetings” experience presented by the on-premise Sametime and IBM’s hosted service, IBM SmartCloud. Those who trace web conferencing lineage remember that Sametime has evolved in-house for well over a

decade, while the web conferencing used in the IBM SmartCloud was based on the acquisition of WebDialogs / Unyte back in 2007 — with the result being two different offerings. No more — to IBM’s credit, now there is one experience

to learn, explain, and develop / support going forward. Some nice consistencies result: while Sametime on-prem allows users to choose files from a local hard drive, IBM SmartCloud Meetings allows files to be chosen from the user’s Cloud-based “My Files” repository.

IBM’s announcements specifically surround 1) rationalizing / unifying two disparate web conferencing capabilities; 2) audio conferencing integrations; 3) a software MCU; and 4) Sametime—IBM Connections integration.

Audio conferencing integration has also advanced with Arkadin announcing the ability to integrate between ArkadinAnytime and both on-premise Sametime and the Cloud-based IBM SmartCloud Meetings. Additional audio conferencing integration options include PGi services with Sametime through a plug-in from Epilio, and plug-ins for Sametime to work with Cisco and ShoreTel telephony.

While IBM mentioned that it has had a number of customer wins enabled by the integration of Sametime with Polycom’s RealPresence video conferencing solutions, it also demonstrated its to-be-released “soon” software MCU aimed at desktop video conferencing applications. Highlights will include HD with continuous presence, H.264 SVC support, support of browsers / rich clients / mobile devices as endpoints, and opening the platform for interoperability with third-party endpoints (Polycom SVC as an example).

The icing on the cake from an IBM “Social Business” perspective is the continued effort to integrate Sametime with IBM Connections — the company’s “social software for business” platform. Of note are presence-enabled profiles from which any Sametime service can be launched, the ability to update your Sametime presence status from within Connections, and being able to ask a Connections Community a question in real-time —all of which are intended to seamlessly-enable social communications.

Ooh la la: Ooyala and iStreamPlanet Steve Vonder Haar, [email protected]

Ooyala and iStreamPlanet unveiled a technology partnership last week that expands the scope of product features offered by both vendors of hosted streaming solutions. With the partnership, Ooyala will now integrate live streaming capabilities from iStreamPlanet into its online video platform that previously only handled on-demand streaming content. iStreamPlanet, in turn, will integrate analytics and monetization capabilities offered by Ooyala.

The integration of iStreamPlanet’s workflow for live video opens the door for Ooyala to process live video content for delivery to a wide range of devices, including Apple iPads and iPhones. Financial terms of the partnership were not disclosed.

What Steve Thinks: The partnership between Ooyala and iStreamPlanet further illustrates the flexibility that providers of hosted streaming solutions have in enhancing their product platforms. By integrating live capabilities from iStreamPlanet, Ooyala now has a more robust offering that addresses a broader range of enterprise communications needs than the company could previously address with its hosted platform designed primarily for on-demand streaming.

At the same time, iStreamPlanet gets access to Ooyala’s analytics and monetization tools, making it possible for iStreamPlanet to offer a more complete solution for organizations looking to use streaming in externally- focused sales and marketing applications.

The mix-and-match approach to integrating features from outside vendors on a modular basis opens the door to accelerated enhancement of today’s streaming platforms. And: this type of technology partnership makes it easier for vendors to create solutions with more “best-of-breed” features — a development that will ultimately improve the quality of cost-effective streaming solutions for the enterprise market. More cross-vendor technology partnerships of this type should be expected in the months and years ahead.

Polycom Q4 and Year 2012 FinancialsAndrew W. Davis, [email protected]

Polycom ended the year on an upbeat note — if not joyous, at least positive. Sequential quarterly revenues showed positive growth in almost all categories, although year over year growth numbers were mostly negative. Perhaps most surprising was the strong sequential growth in EMEA. As our data table shows, one of the major concerns might be the 18% annual drop in product revenues, something the company has tried to address with its “software” marketing and PR focus.

Our annual data for Polycom is only 99% accurate, since we have not been able to account for all discontinued operations all the time (think SpectraLink). The ten year compound annual growth rate for Polycom revenues is 11.9%.

What Andrew Thinks: Polycom is still in the driver’s seat when it comes to the video conferencing bus. The ques-tion is whether the bus is running out of gas. As custom-ers turn to Unified Communications (Microsoft Lync, Cisco Jabber, IBM Sametime, Avaya Aura, Siemens OpenScape, etc.), or to HD-enabled web conferencing services, and / or mobile solutions for smartphones and tablets, will they continue to invest in conference room video? The current data is inconclusive, but if not, then Polycom’s revenues have nowhere to go but down. That isn’t to say that Polycom is going to disappear as much as to suggest that the future Polycom might look very different. Polycom’s main competitors, of course, face a similar dilemma, but most of them have a different array of product and service lines. Polycom was wise to aban-don the “telepresence” marketing thrust and try to get ahead of the software hype; while my colleague Ira Weinstein offered his latest take on Polycom 2.0 in Volume 13 # 20 of the WR Bulletin back in the fall, the goal of becoming a software company is still in pro-cess. Just saying you are a software company doesn’t necessarily make it so — not yet, anyway.

News in Brief• Speaking of earnings, Avaya reported results for the company’s first quarter of fiscal 2013, with revenues of $1.24 billion, down 2.9% compared to the prior quarter and down 10.6% compared to the same quarter last year. The company stated particular weakness with the U.S. federal government and said the revenue decline was due to lower customer demand (surprising). Operating income was $23 million compared to operating income of $76 million for the prior quarter and $82 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2012. Avaya Global Services revenues were $609M, down 2.6% sequentially and down 4.5% annually. A total of 54% of all revenues came from the US. Avaya also made a number of RADVISION-related announcements at ISE in Amsterdam; we’ll be covering those in our next issue of the WR Bulletin.

• Analysts love to discover nuggets. We are part journalists, part researchers, part connect-the-dot hopeful web surfers. While Microsoft often can be scant with details, our web conferencing and UC teams note that Microsoft Business Division has quietly reported that Lync revenues are up 35% for its fiscal Q2, driven in part by strong multi-year licensing. The company also reported that Skype had 138 billion minutes of calls on its network this quarter, up 59 percent from a year ago.

• Just last week ReadyTalk announced a beta version of a new video conferencing offering, adding video to its mix of conferencing and events services. The beta test, available to current ReadyTalk customers only, supports up to 4 simultaneous video feeds with up to 25 total participants viewing the session.

• Even as rumors hit the press that Logitech is considering a divestiture of its business-oriented LifeSize — which it purchased in 2009 — the latter introduced a new series of video conferencing products, the Icon Series. Starting at $2,999, features include simplified directory navigation; scheduling capabilities including click-to-join-meeting reminders; streaming and recording; multiparty calling; Firewall NAT traversal with secure full HD video calls within and across networks; data sharing up to 1080p and custom layout options; HD video quality up to 1080p60; and more. The LifeSize Icon Series video solutions include LifeSize UVC Manager, and certain features such as streaming and recording, firewall / NAT traversal, and multiparty calling are available via specific UVC Platform applications.

• 8x8 has launched its cloud-based business communications services in Canada, as the first in a series of expansions outside the U.S. The 8x8 Virtual Office Cloud Communications Suite will be available in most Canadian provinces immediately, providing hosted VoIP, contact center, UC, and video conferencing. Customers can select local numbers in each covered province as well as virtual numbers from Canada, the U.S., and around the world. And

companies with locations in Canada and the U.S. can now have a single virtual PBX, enabling extension dialing with HD audio. WR uses it when traveling overseas and have been impressed with the quality of the audio when calling back to the U.S. 8x8, Inc. also reported record Q3 2013 results of $27.3 million, up 17% year-over-year from $23.4 million in Q3 2012. The company ended the quarter with $46.5 million in cash and investments.

• Subject of a recent WR research note and “test drive,” Zoom has announced it has raised $6 million in Series A Funding, supplied by Qualcomm Ventures, Yahoo founder Jerry Yang, WebEx founder Subrah Iyar, and former Cisco SVP and General Counsel Dan Scheinman. At the same time the company announced Release 1.0 of its product, including its first paid offerings and new features such as 40 participants, screen sharing, and meeting recording. Zoom appears to throttle meetings of more than 2 people to 20 minutes, then begins charging in plans that start at $9.99 per month. The company also indicates it intends to target SMB’s and education users.

• Minnesota-based Netbriefings has released version 3.2 of Proclaim Messenger’s video messaging app on iTunes. This release provides the ability to record live video along with synchronized content on an iPhone to create either a recorded message, or conduct live video or audio streaming.

•LittledidWainhouseResearchknowaswe landed in Amsterdam for our UC&C Summit last week that our host country was launching its largest medical video conferencing network. Over 50 Dutch hospitals have joined the Qconferencing network, which has created a special medical portal on its website to enable improved reach and access. The goal is to improve specialist access, particularly for oncological consultations. Qconferencing is an independent specialist in selling and implementing video communications solutions and a provider of managed HD video conferencing services

• Nexistant has delivered Release 1.1 of its Virtual Assistant. The new release includes a new stand-alone kiosk, configurable for remote concierge and

lobby attendant applications, as well as a new administrative portal, updated agent desktop, and support for a variety of new devices related to security and authentication. Working with Connexus, Nexistant now offers its VA Call Center as a cloud service — with the goal of targeting small and medium business projects.

• BroadSoft, known to many enterprise customers, has licensed SPIRIT DSP’s Mobile Video Engine to provide HD-quality voice and video calls in its BroadTouch Business Communicator user application. BroadSoft has over 500 telecommunications provider customers in more than 65 countries, so

expect to see more HD video hitting the airwaves. SPIRIT DSP is replacing Google’s voice engine, for those keeping track of all things Google and UC&C.

• BizVision, a provider of video-powered online training and professional education, announced the public availability of its nationwide network of professional videographers. These videographers are trained to provide webcasting and video streaming services for organizations of all sizes, and claims its network includes thousands of video professionals and webcasting technicians in all 50 states. WR’s Steve Vonder Haar points out that there are several comparable networks of videographers around the globe, and that that this points to growing interest in professional quality videography to support the growing demand for web casting and streaming services.

• Compass Business Solutions has expanded its course offerings by adding Cisco’s new CCNA Video Certification courses. The company has also created an accelerated course for TelePresence Video Specialist training, creating a one-week intensive course out of what was a two-week course, for those in a hurry to get (back) to work!

A Top 10 Thematic View of the European UC&C Summit Alan D. Greenberg, [email protected]

Perhaps one of our most diverse Summits ever, several themes emerged at the event in Amsterdam last week. In no particular order, here are some of

the top 10 items that had the room buzzing, debating, and discussing: 1) Everyone wants mobility but how we get there will vary; 2) HD video and very user-friendly apps are together hitting mobile devices in some new and intriguing ways; 3) the business case for (and ROI achievable from) streaming video is better articulated than ever, as evidenced in case studies of ABN AMRO Bank, Nestle, and GM (one of the really hot areas is employee engagement); 4) the UC&C stack is coming together in new and novel ways; 5) how we access conferencing may change as the result of a slew of start-ups bringing new UI’s to market; 6) running those big video conferencing networks requires as much skill and technical knowhow as ever; 7) some of that skill and knowhow can benefit from understanding Scalable Video Coding (SVC) and layer switching, H.265, and WebRTC; 8) reaching the “shining castle” for true UC&C requires a clever strategy and a “switchback approach” – you don’t get there as the crow flies; 9) changing culture and technology simultaneously requires a combination of training, short-form technical sessions, and even a somewhat disposable “suitcase” of workshop tools; and 10) collaboration tools can be used to sell more collaboration, using a methodical marketing approach. We could go on but with space limited here, we’ll just say: all is not lost if you missed the event!

A good place for an analyst event: the first planned city in IndiaBill Haskins, [email protected]

Analysts like planning. Systems. Order. How fitting then that Tata Communications chose to hold its annual Global Analyst and CEO Summit in Jaipur — apparently the first planned city in India way back in the 16th century. As industry analysts, we are often invited to attend analyst conferences hosted by the largest

communications providers in the world. While I walked away with some great insight into the company’s 2013

strategy and new executive relationships, I must say that Tata established a new bar of excellence in the analyst summit category — the event was well run, provided executive access, delivered good information, all set in Jaipur, India — one of the most eclectic and fascinating cities in the world.

The event kicked off with a keynote delivered by Tata’s CEO, Vinod Kumar, and it was apparent that Tata was committed to putting its executives “front and center.” Mr. Kumar provided the overview common at these events, noting the key strategic areas that Tata will be developing in 2013: Data Center, Ethernet, UC&C, Video, Cloud and Mobile Broadband. While these are the strategic areas of focus that we see from the big global telecommunications providers, I was glad to see UC&C and Video highlighted as core areas for investment. All of Mr. Kumar’s executive staff was there. I was able to spend quality time with John Hayduk, Tata’s President of Product Management and Service Development, Peter Quinlan, Vice President of Integrated Business Video

On March 7, 2013, Wainhouse Research will feature con-tent from the Amsterdam conference as part of our first-ever UC+C Summit Virtual Event. Just as was the case in our January summit, the goal of the Virtual Summit is to bring together technology vendors and end users to exchange ideas on key trends influencing the develop-ment of the entire evolving UC&C market. In this case, we are replaying selected Amsterdam talks and building a community around those talks.

Presentations from Wainhouse Research analysts Bill Haskins and Andy Nilssen will be followed with oppor-

tunities for a live Q&A accessible online. Also featured will be presentations on adoption trends by thought leaders re-sponsible for technology implementation at companies such as Glaxo Smith Kline and other firms that spoke in Amsterdam.

Attendees can register for free access by following this link and will have the chance to collaborate with one another and visit the virtual booths of leading vendors.

Finally, if you missed Amsterdam and have other plans on March 7, come join us in Santa Clara this summer July 16-17, Asia / Pac this fall (details to come), or Amsterdam this time next year for a similar exhilarating event. We’ve also had a “happening” Twitter hashtag, #WRAMS13, if you’d like to read some of the tweeting that went on, and some serious blogging taking place.

Special thanks go to our sponsors and all of the speakers and attendees.1

1Note: we were so busy getting back from the Summit, stay tuned and in the next issue we’ll tell you about the cool stuff we saw at ISE.

New Studies from Wainhouse ResearchFor information on WR studies and subscriptions, contact [email protected]

4Unified Communications

Metrics Survey – Worldwide Enterprise Trends of Unified CommunicationsThis 2012 survey covers the unified communications (UC) market and focuses on end user communications preferences and organizational UC strategy, brand awareness, deployment options, and related purchasing behavior. Respondents are split fairly evenly between small-to-medium enterprises (SME) with 500 or fewer employees and mid-to-large enterprises with greater than 500 employees; therefore, the results are segmented between SME and mid-to-large markets when appropriate.

Provider Reviews – 2012 Global UCaaS Vendor ReviewsA critical review and assessment of top 12 worldwide UCaaS providers. Includes a summary of UC features, company background, UC product description, and analysis of each provider’s approach.

4Distance Education & e-Learning

Research Note – MOOCs and the Collaboration IndustryThe year 2012 was the year of the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) in higher education. Even as MOOCs remain primarily in the experimental stage, this note explores the factors driving interest in the concept and assesses their potential impact on collaboration vendors that sell into education mar-kets. Also addressed in this report will be the factors that educators should consider when attempting to implement a MOOC.

Metrics Survey – Distance Education and e-Learning Metrics Survey 2012Survey of 280 higher ed, K-12 educators, and service / content providers, covering lecture capture / streaming; PC-based, video-centric collaboration; PC-based, content-centric web conferencing; group / classroom videoconferencing; and interactive whiteboards. The report explores spending plans for each technology in 2013, and this year adds discussion of attitudes towards the challenges and opportunities offered by BYOD / BYOA in education.

Services, and Julie Woods-Moss, Tata’s Chief Marketing Officer, picking their brains on Tata’s future UC strategy. The Cliff notes (abridged versions of full-length books, for those international readers not familiar with how students in North America try to digest big topics): Tata’s UC strategy begins with their video experience, and a recent upgrade to the company’s hosted, B2B telepresence exchange (aka Integrated Business Video Services). Building on its launch of the Global Meeting Alliance back in January 2012, Tata has augmented its video offering as follows:

• Multiple transport options: On-net QoS from multiple carriers, Internet, or ISDN if needed

• Multiple standards and clients: SIP, H.323, H.320, Lync and Jabber

• Pricing options, including one price per minute per connection and monthly port / resource leasing options

• A free Tata video client available for download

From a UC standpoint, Tata is focused on the network and video side of the UCaaS equation — providing high quality, multi-client B2B video connectivity. While this is a logical foundation for Tata to build from, the current video product is not that different from other cloud based video offers. That said, it will be interesting to see what’s next — Hosted Microsoft Lync? Hosted Cisco HCS?

Hosted Avaya Flare? None of the above? Tata has a lot of choices to make.

The executive dinner was over-the-top fun, as well as an effective networking event. The itinerary noted “Royal Parade to precede dinner” — a parade that included full participation from execs and analysts, as we were loaded up on elephants and horse-drawn carts. Let me tell

you — nothing encourages conversation and bonding like sitting 10 feet in the air atop a dancing elephant.

Tata hosted an industry conference with unique style, excellent communication, and a fair amount of fun. Meanwhile, we’ll look forward to hearing about their next steps in the UC arena over 2013.

Fearless Bill was unafraid to use his high-end camera — except while riding

Research Note – The Birth of the Sub-$1,000 Group Video SystemA quick look at the features and performance of low cost video appliancesIn recent years, a handful of vendors have released group video conferencing systems with list prices below US $1,000. While true that up-front cost is only part of the total cost of ownership (TCO) for a video conferencing system, WR believes that the massive price difference between the current crop of professional group VC systems and these sub-$1k systems may just be the catalyst for a dramatic change within the group video market. This research note takes a close look at offerings in this category from Biscotti, Logitech, and Tely Labs.

Research Note – Zoom Video ConferencingWR Takes the Zoom VC Service for a Test DriveEvery once in a while, WR stumbles across a company, product, service, or technology that for some reason (innovation, differentiation, price point, per-formance, etc.) catches our attention.
