Preparing Children

For A Good Life

In This World And The Next

Today in The Bahamas, parents have threechoices to educate their children: government, private and home-schooling.

The ProblemIn all countries—and the Bahamas is no

exception—the problems with governmentschools are legend: Lack of discipline, illiteracy, poor maths, even descending into violence, drugs and sex. God is either ignored orwatered-down. Many argue that parents are toblame: that anti-Christian behavior is importedfrom homes.

Private SchoolingPrivate schooling has a much better chance

of producing well-rounded and God-lovingchildren. Although average grades are notstunning, they are far better than in publicschools. Yet still, many parents in the privateschool system are concerned. Perhaps they’reunhappy with untested teaching philosophies, superficial Christianity or a big schoolenvironment. Whatever the concern, almost allparents want a safer, more effective education.

Home-SchoolingHome-schooling provides the best chance

to keep your children safe and gain a goodeducation. Yet, home-schooling doesn’t workfor all families and is not always convenient.

A Christian education is one inwhich the infallible truths of

Scripture reign paramount. Theyform the foundation upon whichall academic pursuits are built, and for that reason, students areoften better able to reach their

full educational potential.As Solomon writes:

“The fear of the Lord is thebeginning of wisdom, and theknowledge of the Holy One is

understanding.”Proverbs 9:10

"An education that trains themind without training the moralsense is a menace to civilization

rather than a help."J. Gresham Machen Space is limited

The SolutionLooking at the problem on a world scale,

there’s a growing unhappiness—even adesperation—with Western education. Theresults reflected by society are all too plain.Employers complain about work-force readinessand the dearth of basics skills such as reading, writing and math. One has to wonder: What isthe cause? And is there a better way?Such questions were pondered by Dorothy

Sayers in a classic essay: “The Lost Tools OfLearning” presented at Oxford University. She lucidly set forth education’s problems, itsroot causes and the solution. She called for thereintroduction of the great methods of classicaleducation—the method that nurtured an entirecivilization. Above all, she said, children needan education that is God-centered, thatexplains life’s wonders and His creation.

The First Classical SchoolSayers’ dream was realized when the Logos

School in Moscow, Idaho, took her essay toheart and implemented a new educationalphilosophy. The school gained wide acclaimin 1991 when Douglas Wilson wrote aboutthe school in his book: "Rediscovering theLost Tools of Learning.” It caused anoverwhelming response and classical schoolssprang up. By 1993, the movement had grownso large that the Association of Classical &Christian Schools was formed. Today, morethan 210 schools are members of the ACCS.

The three key institutions that shape a childare the home, the church and the school.Children are served best when all threeinstitutions point them in the same direction.Only an education that has the liberty to

address the whole child—the social, intellectual, emotional, physical and spiritual—can extract a child’s full potential. There are key differences with Classical

Christian schools. The first concerns God andthe meaning of life.

God Comes FirstIn Classical Christian schools

the entire process of educating isGod-centered. By that, we don’tmean only saying daily prayers; we

mean the whole basis of existence. Everythingyou learn, see and hear, all knowledge, allhistory, maths, language and every field ofscience has a God-given context. And childrenshould be taught that.

The Middle AgesIn The Middle Ages, the belief system was

an ordered, comprehensible world-view, begin-ning with the idea that all knowledge andgoodness come from God. It’s no wonder thatGod rewarded the Western world with someof the world’s greatest minds and schools.

The Source Of ConfidenceModern Classical schools are similarly God-

centered, providing a foundation of truth andwisdom. Teachers approach all of life from abiblical world-view. Putting God first givesmeaning and wisdom to children's own lives. The resulting joy of life gives them moralcourage, self-esteem and confidence.

The second key difference ofclassical schooling is the waychildren are taught. As in centuriespast, Classical and Christianschools adhere to the time-

honoured Trivium: grammar, logic andrhetoric.

Matching How A Child LearnsOne natural advantage of this three-stage

method is that it goes “with the grain” andconforms to how children learn.Children have different abilities at different

ages. For example, students at the grammarlevel, are particularly good at memorizing, soteachers use rote methods like rhythmic verse, singing and drama to help them absorb lots ofinformation, including spelling, language, maths and history. This gives them the masteryof tools to accomplish the next level.

How To ThinkLater, children develop the capacity for

2

Strength To Remain GoodInstead of society’s prevailing “whatever” or

“easy come, easy go” attitudes, a foundationof truth stands strong. Years later, when peerpressure and the strong winds of life blow, thatstrong foundation, together with parents’ owninfluence, will help keep children from falling.

The Surest WaySome schools prepare students for a job and

others equip students for life. By keeping Godas the central cause for all life, a Classical &Christian education has the best chance to doboth.

abstract thought and the ability to drawconclusions from facts, So, Classical Christianschools then focus on teaching “How ToThink” and formal logic. Students developsound reasoning skills, construct validarguments and can spot and argue againstlogical fallacies. This is a skill plainly lacking inmuch of today’s education.

How To ExpressBy high school, students are starting to

formulate their own views, so the courseworkshifts. Now there’s a focus on rhetoric: how topresent views and how to defend them, orallyand in writing, with persuasion and eloquence. For centuries, such skills were taught to all

children and helped tutor the great masters tobuild up the arts and civilization.

The Actual SourceAnother difference of the classical method is

the prevalent use of primary sources toaccompany textbooks. These sources includethe Bible and works by Homer, Aristotle,Shakespeare and Saint Augustine. Instead ofhearing about the Magna Carta, students mayactually read it.

The BenefitsAfter the Trivium children know what life is

all about. They’ve learnt much, they write andspeak well, and are confident in self-expression. Being grounded in God’s wisdomand truth, their behavior is tempered byhumility and a strong love for God and fellowman. It’s a start to life that all children deserve.Call us or visit our web site:www.NewProvidenceClassicalSchool.org

WHAT’S SPECIAL ABOUT A CLASSICALCHRISTIAN SCHOOL?

The Three KeysClassical education is a three-stage

process of training the mind and uses what iscalled “The Trivium.” The three stagesfollow the natural ability of a child’s mind asit grows. It’s a method that logicallyprogresses as if one is building a house. The early years of school are spent in

absorbing facts, systematically laying thefoundation for advanced study. The studentmasters the tools of learning in Grammar(the science & art of language). The child isthen equipped to learn Logic (the science &art of reasoning and thought). Lastly, focus is

placed on Rhetoric (the science & art ofverbal and written expression). ThisClassical Trivium is applied to allsubjects while remaining Christ-centeredand nurturing the soul.

Results Show The WayAs classical schools increasingly produce

excellent results and well-adjusted students, thousands of parents are returning to theclassical method. In the USA, three out offour classical students score in the highest10% on national tests and they are yearsahead. The proven classical method excelstoday as it has for centuries.

WHAT IS CLASSICAL EDUCATION?

In The USA, by Grade 5 the averageclassically-school child is 2 yearsahead of the national averageaccording to the SAT Tests in 2005.By Grade 9, they are 3 years ahead.

As classical schools continue toscore impressive results and satisfyparents and students, the numbersof schools joining the Association ofClassical & Christian Schools isgrowing at an impressive rate.

I advise no one to place his childwhere the Scriptures do not reign

paramount. Every institution in whichmen are not increasingly occupied

with the Word of God must becomecorrupt… I am much afraid thatschools will prove to be the greatgates of hell unless they diligently

labor in explaining the HolyScriptures, engraving them in the

hearts of youth.”Martin Luther

"In just one generation, mostChristian students will graduate from(public) high school and begin their

lives operating from a paganworld-view."

The Nehemiah Institute
