MANAGER’S CORNERJIM LOGAN
It looks like the rain may be coming to anend…almost. It is great to be able to keep upwith the mowing and the Maintenance Staffreally appreciates your patience. All of us canfinally catch up with those “out of control” weedsand really get Horizon Village to shine. Now thatthe mowing crew won’t have to cut grass everyminute it’s not pouring outside, they will be ableto complete those projects they have beenhalted by rainy season. I know we all want theseprojects wrapped up. The maintenance guys willbe working on, such as finishing the center islandand replacing the lake fountain as well asworking on the shuffleboard and bocce courts. They have also been working on a couple of theco-op houses when the rains have been tooheavy to mow.
It’s also a good time to get ready for Season bypower washing your home, making sure yourheaters are working before the first cool night of70 degrees.
Remember, when you’re cleaning out the closetsand sheds and getting rid of surplus items thatyou no longer want ,( but aren’t quite trash yet)that driveway or yard sales are not allowed. You can use the bulletin board in the clubhouseto sell items or save them for the VSA Trash andTreasure Sales.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEELAINE FOLSOM
Well, October brings us one month closer to theend of hurricane season and our neighbors andfriends will be returning shortly from the North .Summer has literally flown by and now our busysocial season will be starting once again.
I was looking ahead at the social calendar andWOW, we are going to be busy. Our first dance is November 19th with Brylcreamfollowed on December 3rd with the Gold Tones. We also have the American Kings direct fromOhio making another appearance in our hall inJanuary. Some real nice entertainment foreveryone. Great listening music even if you nolonger can dance. We have 10 dancesscheduled from November to March and, don’tforget, the three great shows from HorizonPresents
I am not counting all the dinners and lunchesthat our volunteers sponsor. I know I amlooking forward to Roy’s famous & delicioussteak sandwich lunch on October 19th andBarb’s Witch’s Brew on October 22nd. Pleaseget out and support all the events. We all workreally hard to make Horizon Village the envy ofour neighbors.
VSA Memberships for 2017 go on sale onOctober 1 at the General Meeting. If youalready have a 2016 badge, then it is good untilDecember 31st. But if you want to avoid therush and want to sport your new badge early, then your Membership Committee will beavailable at the meeting to sell you your new orrenewal badge. Remember, VSA membersreceive a discount on their food tickets as well asa bigger discount when renting a table for theflea markets.
We have had some new volunteers step forwardto chair the monthly pot lucks. Please supportthem by signing up and attending the pot luckdinners held the first Friday of each month at5:30 PM.
Don’t forget that the VSA Election of Officers iscoming up in December. All Intent to Runforms need to be turned in before October 31st.The four officers plus two board memberpositions are open. Some forms have alreadybeen turned in to John Mellor. Get involvedand have fun!

CO-OP CLIPSTERRY RICKARD
Hopefully our rainy season will be coming to aclose soon. This season slowed downcompletion of many of our park projects thatwe planned on completing. Even our weeklychores of mowing were interrupted by theserains. We try and do as many projects as wecan in the summer to not interrupt activitiesas much as possible. So our schedule may bereevaluated for the remainder of the year.We need to accomplish a certain amount ofwork to maintain our scheduled projects.
So we apologize beforehand if we have toinfringe on any activities but, we mustmaintain a schedule to keep our park at itsbest for everyone.
BAKE CONCESSIONCELESTE COLLIER
Our first day of baked goods for the kitchenconcession went very well. Not all the goodieswere sold so I took them to Dave, the supervisorof the Maintenance Crew and they were receivedwith a smile. This was our President ElaineFolsom’s idea so that we could thank them for allthey do. They are hard workers and deserve ourthanks. In closing, I would like to ask if we canget some more volunteers to donate some kind ofdessert to be sold on Monday nights. Right nowI only have 4 volunteers and really need morebecause once the snowbirds come, I will need twopeople each Monday to donate. Once thesnowbirds return, the number of people thatcome to Bingo or just come to eat dinner willincrease. I have left the sign-up sheet on theBulletin Board. The VSA is a worthy cause. Please consider volunteering!
If you would like to donate blood, the Blood Mobile will be at Horizon
Village on these dates:
Oct 31 Jan 9 March 13
Watch for flyers and and moredetails in newsletters.
HOMEOWNERS QUESTIONNAIRE FORMELAINE FOLSOM
I am sure that at some time during your residencyat Horizon Village, you completed the HomeownersQuestionnaire Form. The VSA keeps a data baseon the residents. It helps in the event that thereis a problem with your residence while you areaway. We then have a local or out of towncontact in order to reach you. We also place yourbirthday and anniversaries in the New HorizonsNewsletter from info on the questionnaire.
However, the big problem is that these forms arehardly ever updated by YOU. Has your contactperson, now passed away or moved? Or doesyour daughter up north, now have a new cellphone number that she uses all the time? Haveyou discarded your land line and now just use yourcell phone?
Blank forms are in the entry lobby on the BulletinBoard. Please fill out a form and drop it in themail slot of the VSA office. We will update yourrecords.
ELECTION TIMEJOHN MELLOR
It’s your turn to step up and make a difference. All officers and at least two director positions willbe up for your consideration. Please contact JohnMellor for more information at 239-349-4236.

When an Ordinary Thunderstorm Isn’t OrdinaryDEB KOBRES
Friday August 12th was just like any other August day in North Fort Myers – hot and humid. And, like mostsummer days, the late afternoon skies turned cloudy and gray with familiar rumbles of thunder off in thedistance. Ah, relief! The approaching thunderstorm would make for a cooler evening. It might even cool offenough to sit out on the lanai in comfort. If only…Instead, the thunderstorm that came through Horizon Village that afternoon was no ordinary thunderstorm. Itproduced winds that caught us all by surprise. With no warning and in the blink of an eye, some of us heardloud, crashing sounds. Others saw pieces of aluminum flying across the lake. Some heard aluminum shards hittheir homes. Many found pieces of aluminum in their yards and driveways. Without a doubt, whatever washappening wasn’t ordinary. So, what did happen? Was it a tornado? No, it wasn’t a tornado that hit us. It was a severe thunderstorm. It produced short bursts of wind so powerfulthat four homes in the vicinity of Lakeside Drive and Rainbow Drive sustained quite a bit of damage. Onehome had severe damage to the carport. Others had portions of the roof peeled up and back and damagedwindows. The event was so surprising that local news media reported it that evening.Within minutes CERT members arrived at the damaged homes. They made sure all of the residents in thosehomes were all right. They evaluated the homes to ensure everything was secure and no dangers lurked. Thenthey taped off the damaged areas to keep them isolated until the homeowners could get repairs underway. Butall were fortunate. No one was injured and the damaged homes are being fixed. All of our residents know that we have a CERT team here at Horizon Village. But who should you call ifthere’s an emergency? What happens if you see something amiss or if there’s another thunderstorm like theone that hit on August 12th? How do you get immediate help inside the park? Here is a list of the Horizon Village CERT leaders. PLEASE CALL any one of them (or anyone else youknow to be a CERT member) if you see something that requires immediate attention. Scenarios like the onethat occurred here in August are precisely what our CERT members train for.Judy Chambers…………….. And never take Florida thunderstorms lightly! They can develop into a serious problem in a hurry.Stay safe and see you next month with more tips from your Horizon Village CERT team!
