Evoking images of tranquility and calm waters, the neighbourhood of Deep Cove does not dis-appoint. It’s not hard then, to see why local resi-dents are so vocal about their devotion to what they call simply, “The Cove”.

Situated on Vancouver’s North Shore, Deep Cove faces east, at the entrance of Indian Arm, just off the Burrard inlet. Less than a 30-minute commute to downtown Vancouver, the area is easily accessible by public transportation, car or bicycle. Skirted by mountains, forest and the tranquil waters of a bay that shares the same name, Deep Cove got its start as a popular sum-mer destination more than a century ago. Since then, it’s blossomed into an idyllic waterfront village with some of the North Shore’s most sought after real estate.

Unlike West Vancouver, where waterfront condi-tions can be rough, the Burrard inlet provides a natural barrier from strong winds. This allows residents access to docks for boats, floater planes, and recreational vehicles. After the port authority prohibited additional docks from be-ing built, these properties are now prime real estate, providing an incredible investment op-portunity for locals and foreign investors alike.

Despite a population lingering just above 1000 people, the quiet streets of Deep Cove village are lined with boutique shops, craft stores, art galler-ies, two local theatres, and a number of neighbor-

hood restaurants. Just a few minutes away from the village, the Parkgate Community Centre offers facilities and programs catering to all ages. The retirement community enjoys their Senior Centre, as well as a local senior tennis association, and even a wellness park. The Community Centre also offers a Resource Centre for parents, a licensed childcare facility, health clinic, and a number of other community-based programs. Families with children have plenty of options too. Deep Cove is served by a total of four elementary and second-ary schools, in addition to another four that pro-vide French immersion.

But the crowning jewel of this area is its laid-back lifestyle and natural beauty. The bay pro-vides opportunities for endless ocean sports, including a local Rowing Club, Yacht Club, ca-noeing and kayaking. Twenty-fi ve hiking trails alone lie within just minutes of the village, in-cluding the famous Baden Powell trail, which stretches through some of the area’s most scenic nature. And the Northlands Golf Course, nestled at the foot of Mt. Seymour, is practically an institution.

Whether a foreign investor looking to make a purchase or a resident of Vancouver looking for a hideaway from the hustle and bustle of downtown, The Cove’s high quality of life and stunning backdrop makes it a precious secret sure to get out soon.

Emerging South Surrey community Grandview Heights may be growing fast, but thanks to a comprehensive development plan crafted with input from residents and developers, the bus-tling new neighbourhood has kept much of its historic pastoral charm. The result is a highly livable community that puts an emphasis on access to transportation, walkability and con-venient amenities.

Located east of Sunnyside and south of Kens-ington Prairie, Grandview Heights was originally settled in 1878 by David Brown, who arrived via Ontario. Brown’s sons were avid collectors of exotic trees, and heritage plantings such as the mature trees seen today in Redwood Park and other landscaping from historic estates have been carefully retained throughout the community. The preservation of key mountain and ocean views adds to the area’s agricultural ambiance, and unique natural features such as waterways have been integrated into the neigh-bourhood’s plentiful public green space.

With a projected population of between 21,000 and 32,000 at full development, Grandview Heights is being built in fi ve phases, each with its own detailed neighbourhood development plan. Residential zones include a mix of densi-ties, including lower-density housing through-out the central areas with higher-densities located mainly along the Highway 99 corridor. Public transportation is easily accessed in this

pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly community, and the modifi ed grid road system offers easy access to community facilities, parks, schools and shopping.

In keeping with Grandview Heights’ focus on the environment, some of its newest additions are being built with sustainability in mind. In 2011, the area got its fi rst full-time fi re hall, which in-cludes a solar-heated hot water system. Simi-larly, a new world-class aquatic complex, set to open in 2014, is aiming for LEED Silver certifi -cation. Once complete, the facility will include a 10-lane 50-metre swimming pool with spec-tator seating, a waterslide, a fi tness centre, a steam room and a sauna, with room for future expansion.

Grandview Heights residents rarely need to stray far from home: virtually everything they need can be found at the large urban lifestyle village located at 24th Avenue and 160th Street. Known as Grandview Corners, the lifestyle vil-lage is a pedestrian-oriented outdoor retail shopping centre boasting more than 70 shops, restaurants and services, including a Wal-Mart Supercentre, Home Depot and Future Shop, as well as convenient optical, banking and dental professionals.

In Grandview Heights, an agrarian feel meets a modern ease of living — something that can be appreciated by residents in all stages of life.

It is true, of course: in real estate, location is key. Semiahmoo is one of South Surrey’s most desirable. Accessibility and abundant amenities characterize this location, bringing together everything that life in the Lower Mainland is about. Rich in its diverse offerings of recreation, culture, and community life, the neighbourhood also stays connected to the outdoors with trails, parks, and beaches just minutes away.

The location, though, is not enough. A team with the vision to see how the right home can allow people to fully experience the neighbourhood’s potential is also required. Recognized for consistently building award-winning homes, Boffo Developments brings their vision to the heart of Semiahmoo with Adagio. Designed by award-winning Chris Dikeakos Architects Inc, Adagio is a contemporary treatment of classic design that stands in harmony with its surroundings.

“Boffo designs and builds their homes for the end user,” says sales manager Sandra Miller. “Larger living spaces, and standard luxury items are all included as part of a Boffo home.”

The thoughtful details that have become the Boffo Developments trademark are on evident in every Adagio home. “Boffo has been building for over 40 years, and they are known for their obsession with the details,” says Sandra. High ceilings enhance the openness of every suite, with vaulted ceilings up to fifteen feet high in top floor units. Award-winning Cristina Oberti Interior Design Inc maximizes the potential of these welcoming spaces employing the finest finishing materials throughout. Luxury, elegance, and ease of use are reflected in every choice that we have made.

Nowhere in these homes is the combination of form and function more striking than in the signature Boffo kitchens. Sophisticated layouts provide a setting equally at home for a gourmet dinner party or cookies with grandma. Spacious cabinetry and islands offer ample storage along with room for the extras like the signature Boffo wine chiller, a standard feature in every home. Natural granite and quartz countertops are both visually appealing and ideally suited to the daily demands of life. Premium stainless steel appliances, 5 burner gas cooktops, convection electric ovens: these kitchens lack nothing. “Our kitchens are spectacular,” Sandra says, adding “They are designed for the serious chef.”

The theme of sophisticated luxury continues in the spa-like atmosphere of the Adagio bathrooms. Heated floors, oversized glass-enclosed showers, soaker tubs, and rich appointments create a welcoming retreat within the home. Nothing has been overlooked, right down to the vanity mirror and lighting that brings home that 5-star hotel feeling.

At Adagio, outdoor living is every bit as attractive as it is indoors. Generous terraces and patios with covered spaces and natural gas outlets for barbeques and heaters allow residents to enjoy every

season. Several towering Douglas fir trees have been preserved in the development of the site to maintain a connection with its natural history. Lush landscaped courtyards give residents inviting spaces in which to savour the sunshine.

As with every Boffo home development, Adagio offers an impressive list of amenities to enhance the residents’ daily experiences. The richly furnished lounge features a chef’s demonstration kitchen, double-sided fireplace, televisions, pool table, and expansive terraced garden and patio — an outstanding venue for larger gatherings. The fully equipped fitness centre and steam room with showers and change rooms is like having a hotel-style spa

in the building. “A lot of our buyers are empty-nesters with an active lifestyle, and they are really excited about the residents’ club,” says Sandra.

As Metro Vancouver’s population continues to shift, it’s con-ceivable that in the not so distant future the geographic cen-tre of the Lower Mainland could be the area just east of the Port Mann Bridge. As far-fetched as it sounds, with devel-opment opportunities limited by the ocean to the west, the mountains to the north, and the US border to the south there really is only one direction to expand, and that’s towards the Fraser Valley. Ready, willing and already able to capitalize on this growth is none other than the birthplace of BC.

Langley is the place where it all began for British Columbia. Back on November 19th, 1858 Governor James Douglas offi -cially declared British Columbia a colony at The Fort Langley National Historic Site. Built on the province’s fur trade the city was named after Thomas Langley who was a Hudson Bay Company director for 30 years from 1800 to 1830. The original HBC site is still marked with interactive displays while the historic Village of Fort Langley maintains the same quaint architecture that existed 150 years ago.

Today this energetic municipality of 115,000 people has be-come an increasingly urbanized centre to compliment its natural heritage sites, equestrian centres and world-class wineries. New restaurants, active night spots, gigantic movie complexes and increased development have resulted in over 600 shops, big box outlets and specialty stores throughout the community, along with the highest square footage of commercial retail space outside of Vancouver.

But it doesn’t end there. From a recreational standpoint, Langley has fi rst-rate facilities for almost any sporting en-deavour and no fewer than 15 pools, parks, recreation cen-tres and rinks are open to the public, including the state-of-the-art 250,000 sq ft Langley Events Centre that opened in June 2009. Other notable outdoor activities include fi shing, camping and hiking at Derby Reach in Fort Langley, boating or exploring the vast network of trails at Fort Langley Ma-rina Park, walking or running along the Fort to Fort Trail, or kayaking and cycling at Brae Island Regional Park.

So whether it’s a visit to the Cascades Casino, a perfor-mance at the Summit Theatre or an afternoon of power shopping, Langley offers all the amenities of a large urban centre while managing to retain its small city atmosphere and charm. Add to this the ability to go wine-tasting at a lo-cal vineyard, horseback riding at a nearby ranch, or to take a stroll through an orchard or lavender patch and it’s easy to see why Langley isn’t just another growing community, it’s the place to be.

If you just arrived in Vancouver and had to de-cide where to live, you would have a tough deci-sion on your hands. Virtually every area of the Lower Mainland has its own unique highlights and you could make a compelling case for living in any of them, but in terms of housing costs, nearby amenities, access to downtown and sheer natural beauty, it’s pretty hard to beat Coquitlam.

The largest of the three Tri-City municipalities, Coquitlam occupies an area roughly six times larger than either Port Moody or Port Coquitlam and is centred in the heart of the Lower Main-land. With over 80 municipal parks and natural areas totalling over 2,200 acres it’s known as the City of Choice as a result of its many busi-ness and recreational opportunities, abundant parks, rich culture and heritage — and it’s of little surprise that Coquitlam has boasted some of the highest growth rates in the province over the last 20 years.

The city’s four main communities consist of Southwest Coquitlam encompassing Austin Heights, Burquitlam, Lougheed, Maillardville and Waterfront Village; Northwest Coquitlam which includes the area north of David Avenue on Eagle Mountain and Westwood Plateau; Northeast Coquitlam which covers Upper and Lower Hyde Creek; and City Centre, one of eight designated Regional Town Centres in Metro Vancouver. All of these communities have ex-

perienced signifi cant changes in recent years with Burquitlam, Burke Mountain and Coquit-lam Town Centre in particular seeing high levels of real estate activity, specifi cally in the form of new home development.

Both Burquitlam’s and Coquitlam Town Centre’s growth is primarily the result of the impending Evergreen Line which will eventually connect Port Moody, Coquitlam and Burnaby for the fi rst time through rapid transit when it’s in service by the summer of 2016. Coquitlam Town Cen-tre is the main commercial hub of the city that encompasses a 720-hectare area and includes over 9400 homes along with an abundance of civic, cultural, and educational services, while Burquitlam is in the midst of a complete revi-talization centred around the vision of creating a transit-oriented village at the intersection of Clarke Road and Como Lake Avenue.

The expansion of Coast Meridian Road and the development of the David Avenue Connector have led to a surge in building activity at the base of Burke Mountain where a number of new home communities are in various stages of de-velopment, offering a range of housing options from apartment condos to townhomes to ex-pansive single family homes. New home owner-ship in Coquitlam has never looked better, and this is one area of Metro Vancouver defi nitely worth a visit.

Burnaby Heights was one of the fi rst districts in the Greater Vancouver Area to distinguish themselves as an extension of Vancouver with the development of a street-level community with retail vendors, local business, restaurants, and other such services. By mirroring the street-style community of Vancouver, Burnaby Heights has effectively engaged and connected to the community and contributes to the culture and preservation of North Burnaby’s history since it was established over 150 years ago.

Complete with parks and hiking areas, public schools, recreational facilities, and business-es, Burnaby Heights has its own unique arena for urban development. In 1954 the business dealers of North Burnaby formed a group they deemed the “Merchants” to sustain local businesses located at the Heights. By the late 1960’s, almost 90% of the businesses on Hast-ings Street belonged to the Merchants Associa-tion to preserve the local business landscape and contribute to the longevity of North Burn-aby’s economic growth. The Merchants would celebrate the strength of their community by or-ganizing festivals and special events, and show their support for local residents by providing a unifi ed voice for the community.

Today, the dynamic is much the same; the Heights Merchant Association [HMA] is a Business Improvement Area, connecting over 350 merchants with 150 property owners in North Burnaby, and strives to find the perfect

balance between the economic development of the Heights with the development of the community as a whole. The HMA is respon-sible for improving the attractiveness of the urban landscape and business arena, attract-ing shoppers and local business, organizing and hosting events, implementation of future plans for the community and neighbourhood, and providing a voice for the city’s residents when issues or conflicts arise.

The most popular annual event, Hats Off Day, is sponsored and organized by HMA, and cel-ebrates the relationship between local business vendors and the supportive culture within the community. This year’s Hats Off Day theme is a Mad Hatter Tea Party on Saturday, June 1st, however, the event was first established by the original group of Burnaby Merchants and remains North Burnaby’s largest street parade and festival.

Whether you’re out to enjoy a train ride or pic-nic at Confederation Park, lunch or dinner at Anton’s Pasta Bar or a summertime movie at McGill Park, the strong sense of community and pride that you feel here is unmistakable. Con-venient for both residents who wish to create a space for themselves in their community and merchants looking to grow their independent businesses, living at the Heights means residing in one of the most desirable neighbourhoods in all of Metro Vancouver.

Over the last century, everything about South False Creek has changed, including the shore-line. This newly developed community has transformed from heavy industrial lands to a vibrant and growing neighbourhood with a so-cial conscience.

South False Creek spans from Cambie east to Main, bordered on the south by 2nd Avenue and on the north by the waters of False Creek. The shoreline once ran along 1st Avenue, and was lined by industrial sites, notably, the Vancouver Salt Company, Western Bridge (later known as Canron Steel Fabricating) and the Sauder Lum-ber Company. During World War II, thousands of steel fabricators and ship builders made and launched 10,000-tonne freighters to replace ships sunk in battle at sea.

Industrial emissions were snuffed a few dec-ades ago, and the area’s Neighbourhood Energy Utility (NEU) is now hard at work keeping the environment clean. This green technology is providing the City of Vancouver’s fi rst renewable district heating system, providing heat and hot water to South False Creek residents and ten-ants. The NEU provides environmental, social and economic benefi ts for the City, residents and developers.

More than just socially responsible, South False Creek’s main plaza area is also shaping up to be a social hub for residents and visitors. With the

Seawall’s generous pedestrian and cycle lanes lining the waterfront, young families are drawn to the large, open design for daily recreation and exercise. More than just child’s play, the ample seating structures offer an attractive social setting for stylish urban professionals enjoying some downtime. Kayaks, bicycles and strollers all contribute to the traffi c on and just off this stretch of seawall.

The mixed use development is anchored by Olympic Village development and the Creekside Community Centre and its open design provides a new venue for music festivals and family en-tertainment. Still in early growth, the Village in-cludes ground-level shopping with upscale food shops, pet services, banking, liquor and gelato offerings, and boasts a waterfront craft brew establishment with exquisite sight lines of the mountains and the passerby. Storefronts, pub-lic art and expansive walkways are indication of the resident population: active West Coasters with a taste for urban indulgences.

The view of the mountain tops are the only constant, with evolution from billowing smoke-stacks to rooftop solar thermal collectors. South False Creek is an environmentally friendly living choice yet makes full concessions for fashion and family function. A beautiful West Coast neighbourhood, both inside and out.

Centrally located on Vancouver Island, nes-tled between the Pacifi c Ocean and protective Mount Benson, is the harbour city of Nanaimo. Visitors from around the world come for sum-mer and winter vacations, and seldom does a tourist not want to return - either to retire on a permanent basis, or with their young families to thrive in the safe and clean environment that this area has to offer.

Nanaimo residents are fortunate to have an abundance of parks and trails, most of which are varied to suit the experience of the hiker. If a stroll along the waterfront is more your cup-of-tea you can have that too, and the vacation atmosphere is enticing even for the locals. You can sit along the waterfront at any time of year and watch the boats and sea planes while soak-ing up the scent of the salt water, and in the summer you can gaze at the stately yachts of the rich and famous that tie-up on the docks after they have cruised around the surrounding archipelago.

From here it’s an easy walk to replenish sup-plies or explore the boutique shops in the mews where you can purchase local art work, unique clothing, dine or just enjoy the ambiance of the Old City Quarter with its heritage buildings and cobbled paths. Commercial Street in downtown Nanaimo is one such place, and was named “the

greatest street in Canada” by the Canadian In-stitute of Planners, due to the wide range of heritage buildings, cafes, galleries and shops of every description.

There are many dining options with food of every ethnicity to go along with award winning restaurants in the Harbour City, and recently a Nanaimo Food Charter and Food Strategy focus group was formed with a goal of creating more business opportunities and jobs throughout the food industry. Back-garden food growing, small livestock holdings and bee-keeping are all being encouraged, and will only add to the growing trend of Farmers Markets and the “100-mile diet”.

Year rounds festivals and events keep families and singles out and entertained, and in the summer Maffeo Sutton Park is host to constant activity, from the Vancouver Island Symphony orchestra to school bands, ‘cloggers’ and ‘tub-bers’. The Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society hosts the Great International World Champion Bath-tub Race each year, while another popular at-traction is the Silly Boat Regatta where you see the boats built right in front of your eyes before they set sail. These two activities epitomize Nanaimo by its very nature, and show how this fun, laid-back community has become a col-lection of creative people simply enjoying life.
