As a group we visited the Newcomers centre in Malvern to try and get an understanding of the supports available and how they go about making these services known.

Not all the support services are offered right at there center's. They direct Newcomers to different locations where they can get the specific support/supports they need.

Page 6: Newcomers in canada powerpoint

Funding is a HUGE issue Language barriers Education: They are part of the TDSB so for

children they at this centre directly help parents enroll them in schools.

Some resources people feel embarrassed to access.

As well we visited the Afghan Women’s Organization continually tried to get an more information to the support our advocate topic.

Basically, the organization works for new coming women in Canada. They also provide link classes which is for both for men and women. They have two branches one in Mississauga and another is in Scarborough.

Page 9: Newcomers in canada powerpoint

They faced some issues while providing services for newcomers such as Lack of funding, government cut down their 40%

cost from last year. Therefore, they could not hire more teachers from different language backgrounds.

They need more volunteer workers to help newcomers for link classes.

They also feel that most of the newcomers do not know about their services, and they are trying to do some outreach, which is not enough.

People come and go, rush to work or school like we all do. Not everyone really has time to stay and learn about the missions of our advocate.

We considered the difficulty of raising up the awareness in a limit of time.

Therefore, we decided to use posters to catch people’s attentions as we post them up in the campus and public areas.

Page 17: Newcomers in canada powerpoint

• Although posters may not contain all the information or researches, it can help catching people’s attention while they do not have time or patience to read a whole piece of passage.

Page 18: Newcomers in canada powerpoint

We wish using posters can help to attract audiences and get interested in our advocate.

Page 19: Newcomers in canada powerpoint

To effectively bring our message to the audiences, first thing we need to do is educating the public in a simplest but most straight forward method.

Delivering pamphlets is always a convenient and direct way to send out our messages.

Page 20: Newcomers in canada powerpoint

All of which aims to help

people understand, raise up awareness of our topic and convince others to take part in the advocate.

Also, provide information of agencies to people are seeking for help.

Page 21: Newcomers in canada powerpoint

Living in the multimedia society, it is important for us to getting information online.

Facebook is large online social media which has more than one billion users all over the world.

It spreads out messages quickly and people getting information fast.

Page 22: Newcomers in canada powerpoint

Our Facebook Page has

164 followers which include people from different countries.

We have posted all the information from the Statement to Action Plans to increase their awareness to support newcomers

We wish to use this common online social community to spread the information out and encourage people to take an action to support newcomers.

What is petition?

A formal written request, typically one signed by many people, appealing to authority with respect to a particular cause.

Make a petition to prove a

point. When people sign it, that's saying that they agree with what you say.

Page 24: Newcomers in canada powerpoint

Petition is a legal instrument (form)

Especially a respectful or humble request

Request, that is

addressed to a person or group of persons in authority or power

YMCA newcomers settlement

program provides a variety of comprehensive and wide ranging services to newcomers who need help.

Therefore, we contacted the supervisor of the department and see if we can hold big sale to help gather donation.

There we go!

Page 27: Newcomers in canada powerpoint

The big sale went well as we successfully gathered $150 during almost two hours of fundraising!

Page 28: Newcomers in canada powerpoint

We prepared a comment board for people to put their opinions, feelings and experiences about what newcomers.

Page 29: Newcomers in canada powerpoint

It was a great and unforgettable experience! Although the donation wasn’t a big amount of money but we wish that can help raise up public’s attention of newcomers’ issues.

Page 30: Newcomers in canada powerpoint

H International students find it difficult to access to the services and consultation at the campus. The following are some of the issues: Limited information/

resources Long waiting lines Lack of staff Work permit application To fight for more resources, we wrote a letter to the international department.

Page 31: Newcomers in canada powerpoint

Our final action plan

We contacted Afghan Women’s Organization to see if there was any volunteer position we can help with

We were arranged to help delivering pamphlets and flyers. All of which aimed to help raise up the awareness of issues that newcomers are facing.
