"How-To" | Easiest Way To Fillet A Salmon or Steelhead Effectively.
With Cameron Black of Gone Catchin' Guide Service and Fishing Addicts
Published on Oct 27, 2016
A fish fillet, from the French word filet /fil?/ meaning a thread or strip,[1] is the flesh of a
fish which has been cut or sliced away from the bone by cutting lengthwise along one side
of the fish parallel to the backbone. Fish fillets do not contain the larger bones running along
the vertebrae, they are often said to be "boneless".
In this video Cameron Black of Gone Catchin' Guide Service explains the easiest, fastest, and
most effective way to fillet a salmon. This method will work on salmon, steelhead, bass, or
any other fish you may want to fillet.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p98ZdRDhc0I&list=TLGGmDsDvcEiyjIzMTEwMjAxNg
Cameron comments on how important it is to bleed your fish. Bonk and bleed your catch in
a fish box or other container in water helps. Then put on ice. Recommend using a Kill Bag
or Fish Bag with ice. Really does a great job and takes up less room. We keep ours in bow
of the boat while fishing.
New this August I started using a cheap pair of pruning Shears. Cut under the throat of the
fish. Cut up into where the two gills come together. That worked really good for us. Gave a
guide at the cleaning table our eggs and he was really impressed with how well they were
bled out. Quick and easy and does a very good job. Just have to be sure your fingers are
clear.
I actually do the same thing except Cameron does a better cut on the fins then I do. We do
this while fishing Buoy 10 when staying for a week. Put the fillets in Ziplock bags and on ice.
Then when we get home do all the fine cuts, remove ray bones, remove skin and cut into
dinner portions and vacuum seal bags.
Also we started wrapping our portions in food wrap. Then put in vacuum bags. The fish
stays good for a lot longer then just put in a vacuum bag.
We also have a Manual Defrost Freezer for our fish. If you store fish for more then two
months or longer automatic Defrost freezers damage fish because of the cycle they go
through to defrost the freezer.

This was commented on while listening to Outdoor GPS
recently.
Question if I'm trolling with a dropper how do I figure
out how much line to let out on my line counter reel.
This is based on a 45 degree angle and is accurate
within a foot or so. It is also affected by speeding up
etc. but if you can maintain a 45 degree angle your
close.
Multiple the depth by 1.41
Example: Want to run 25’:
25 X 1.41 = 35.25
You usually want to be inline with the fish or above
them. Supposedly fish won’t go down after a lure.

Oregon Considers Not Implementing Full Planned Columbia Fall Salmon
Reallocation In 2017
Planned Lower Columbia fall Chinook allocation reformations next year could be
put on hold and that’s raising alarm bells in the Sportfishing community.
Oregon fish managers are proposing not moving to an 80:20 recreational:
commercial split in 2017, as WDFW and ODFW had agreed to several years ago, and
instead want to continue with recent years’ split as well as continue gillnetting in
fall above the Lewis River.

Meeting Nov 9 at 9am ODFW Commission. Will hear public testimony.
Location: 4034 Fairview Industrial Drive SE Salem, Oregon
NW Steelheaders sent out this Alert and with the picture above:
The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission will hold its monthly meeting in Salem,
Wednesday, November 9, starting at 8:00 a.m., to discuss, in part, the Columbia
River reforms and where we go from here. We've learned that the Commission will
be taking public testimony. We've also learned that the Oregon fish managers are
proposing NOT moving to an 80/20 recreational/commercial split in 2017.
Let your legislators and Governor Brown know that Oregon's Fish and Wildlife
Commission is meeting to decide this issue and that they are considering rolling
back some of the gains that extend our seasons.
The "Columbia River Reforms", also known as Senate Bill 830 (SB 830), were passed
to address long-standing inequities in how salmon harvest is managed between
sport and commercial interests on the Columbia River. Commercial gillnetters
continue to push to roll back the reforms. Former gill-net strategist Bruce
Buckmaster is a staunch advocate for their position on the Fish and Wildlife
Commission.
Thankfully, the Association of Northwest Steelheaders Executive Director, Bob
Rees, has been checking in daily for more details. A decision on season structure for
the storied spring Chinook fishery, as well as other Columbia River fisheries is
expected in December but it may occur in January.
What can you do?
ATTEND THE COMMISSION MEETING ON NOVEMBER 9th at ODF&W Headquarters!
Wear your Steelheader gear and please consider testifying! This is our final chance
at getting what we have paid for, sacrificed for and what we were promised!
Write a letter of support for SB 830 and the Columbia River Reforms to your state
representative and state senator and to the governor's office.
