2019

Welcome to the 24th Newark Beer & Cider

Festival, proudly organised and staffed

by volunteers from the Newark branch of

CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) and friends.

If you love beer or cider then you’re in the

right place as every year our volunteers

work hard to create a festival that celebrates

real ale and cider from all over the country.

I’m glad to say that this year is no different,

with 130 beers and 30 ciders available

there is something for everyone. I urge

you to go and explore the wide variety on

offer, hopefully you will find new flavours

from breweries old, new, big and small

alongside trusted favourites and maybe

even something quirky along the way.

Festivals are a showcase for quality real ale

and cider providing a huge range of flavours

and styles that can be enjoyed, however if

something shorter or fizzier is more to your

taste then visit the gin & fizz bar.

As usual there will be live entertainment to

get your feet tapping and a range of food

vendors to keep you fed, whether you

fancy a curry, burger or a pie we’ve got you

covered.

Our volunteers are friendly and passionate

about real ale and cider so feel free to ask

for their help in finding your next drink.

Please drink responsibly and have a great

time!

FESTIVAL ETIQUETTE

Beer festival ‘virgins’ should take a few

moments here to learn about Festival

Etiquette. If you are standing with an empty

glass, pick a brew at random, and then

return to this page. Off you go.

Now here are some tips to help enjoy your

session.

1. The breweries are listed in alphabetical

order, followed by the brewery’s location,

the beer strength and then a short tasting

note. Remember – some of these brews

are so new not even our cellarmen have

tasted them, so please be tolerant if the

descriptions aren’t 100% accurate.

2. We suggest you start at the lower end

of the ABV (alcohol by volume) scale, say

around 3.5%, and move steadily towards

the heavier beers at 6 or 7% and beyond.

Remember, at this end of the scale you may

lose your self-respect, use of your legs, or

even your partner!

3. We can’t guarantee that every beer

will be available at every session. It is our

policy not to serve beer that isn’t ready, and

some beers (marked as RESERVE in the list)

aren’t likely to be on first. If your choice isn’t

available, there may be several reasons:

i) We were unable to get the advertised

beer – an alternative from that brewery will

usually be on offer.

ii) The beer is not yet ready to serve – be

patient, it may be available a little later.

iii) You’re late and it’s already sold out!

4. Don’t forget to eat! Visit our caterers

occasionally to help soak up the beer.

PLEASE – don’t drink and drive. Soft drinks are available for drivers and we have timetables and taxi numbers at the information desk.

FESTIVAL ENTERTAINMENT

Newark Beer Festival is about more than

drinking. A quality beer or cider is usually

enjoyed more if it’s accompanied by a

foot tapping tune or two and we have that

perfect mix this weekend. Our talent scouts

spend many nights scouring the land’s hot

and sweaty venues in an attempt to find the

right mix for washing down the ale and cider.

Every year they bring us an entertaining mix

of musical merriment. For those of you who

prefer to sample their beers without music in

the air, we have designated Friday afternoon

as a music-free session. You’ll be able to

enjoy your tipple in relative serenity until

early evening!

Please note the list and timings may be subject to last minute changes due to circumstances beyond our control.

FRIDAY 24TH MAY2pm – 2:30pm

QUIZTime to stir the cerebral cortex with today’s

edition.

7pm – 8pmDECADES APART

Formed in 2016 by Neil Bailey from covers

band “The Business”, “Decades Apart”

featured a young newcomer to the Newark

music scene, Ross Verrills on Acoustic

Guitar and Vocals. With some 30 years

age gap between them, the name seemed

rather fitting and appropriate at the time.

Originally going out as an acoustic duo with

Neil also on Vocals, Acoustic Guitar and

Percussion, the pair debuted at The Prince

Rupert in November 2016. Since then they

have performed as a three piece with Nick

Newsum joining them on Keyboards and

have finally found their niche as an ‘Electro-

Acoustic” duo playing regularly at The

Navigation, Chesters and The Prince Rupert.

With an emphasis on modern covers from

the likes of Ed Sheeran, The Script, Olly

Murs, Busted, McFly, Maroon 5, Paolo Nutini,

George Ezra, Train and some old faves

thrown in for good measure, the pair are

sure to get things off to a lively start!

8:40pm – 10:00pmSHINKICKER

A collaboration between drummer Pete

Pearson and husband and wife team Simon

& Candy Holmes. The band has enjoyed

performing their Rory Gallagher Special

Show at various venues and festivals

throughout the country for several years

now.

Our show aims to highlight the great variety

of Rory’s music, both electric & acoustic.

We put more store in re-creating the feel &

power of Rory’s live performance than the

exact reproduction of the musical parts of

his album recordings, after all, he refused to

be bound by them!

Simon Holmes: Electric & Acoustic Guitars,

Mandolin & Vocals.

Simon has been playing guitar since his

school years. He names his early influences

as Rory Gallagher, Jimi Hendrix and Eric

Clapton with inspiration also coming from

Richard Thompson, Albert Lee & too many

others to name.

Candy Holmes: Bass Guitar & Vocals.

Candy after only starting to play the Bass in

2004 is already a veteran on the circuit. She

has played at pubs, clubs, rallies & festivals

all over the UK & Europe.

Pete Pearson: Drums, Percussion & Vocals.

Pete started in the 1970’s band Zoot Allors

featuring Kevin Thorpe (Out Of The Blue &

Tipping Point) & was signed to Decca! More

recently with the Alan Crawford Band.

Welcome to the Cider and Perry bar which this

year has been sponsored by Fox and Crown,

Appletongate, Newark - the winners of the Branch

Cider Pub of the Year for both 2018 and 2019.

Once again, we have chosen a selection of real

Cider and real Perry from both England and Wales

which will allow you to experience and enjoy

some wonderful flavours. There are some old

favourites back by popular request and some new

ones for you to try.

The fermented fruit drink has enjoyed a

resurgence of popularity in recent years. Real

Cider and Perry are traditional products made

naturally from selected varieties of apples and

pears and is neither carbonated nor pasteurised.

As cider is made from apples, perry is made from

perry pears, which tend to be smaller and harder

than dessert pears.

Nationally, CAMRA members have voted to widen

the definition of real cider to include versions

produced with natural fruits and spices added

after fermentation, giving both a unique flavour

and colour to the cider. Because of the popularity

of cider containing additional fruit and flavourings,

we have a good selection of these on offer at the

festival. You will find on the bar flavours including

Strawberry, Raspberry, Rhubarb, Cherry and even

Sloe Gin!

Every effort has been made to ensure that the

Cider and Perry list is accurate but it has to be

printed long before the ciders actually arrive so

there may be some last minute alterations.

I hope you will find something appealing amongst

the variety of Ciders/Perries we have selected for

this year’s festival.

2019

Each year the Newark branch of CAMRA

raises money for charity through various

activities. Charities are nominated and

voted for at our AGM. This year we have two

local charities that we will be raising money

for at this year’s Beer and Cider Festival,

Beaumond House Community Hospice and

Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance. The charity

representatives or collection boxes will be

happy to take your loose change, folding

money or leftover festival tokens.

BEAUMOND HOUSE COMMUNITY HOSPICE

Beaumond House

Community Hospice

is a registered charity

committed to providing

supportive palliative

care to patients and

their families living in

Newark and district,

an area of approximately 15 miles radius.

We have 4 in-patient beds for people with

palliative care needs, a day therapy as well

as a Hospice at Home service providing

compassionate support to the community.

We are contactable 24 hours a day, 7 days

per week, to provide a friendly ear, general

information or to signpost patients, relatives

and carers to appropriate resources,

services and self-help groups in the Newark

area.

Providing care and support to patients and

their families costs Beaumond House more

than £1million every year. 40% of this is

provided by the NHS whilst approximately

£600,000 of this income is raised through

the generosity of the general public and

local businesses throughout Newark and

district. We raise money from a variety

of sources, running many campaigns,

challenges and events throughout the year.

We are exceptionally grateful to all that

choose to donate on behalf of Beaumond

House. Without the incredible generosity of

the local community we could not continue

to do what we do.

LINCS & NOTTS AIR AMBULANCEThe Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance, which is

celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year,

attends an average of three potentially life-

saving missions every single day, 365 days

of the year.

The life-saving crew transport the equivalent

of an A&E department to people suffering

from the most serious of illnesses and

devastating injuries, providing the best

possible treatment as quickly as possible.

As a Charity, the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance

receives no direct Government funding and

are totally reliant on generous donations

from members of the local communities they

serve to keep their helicopter flying.

You can help them to continue saving lives

every day by donating at:
