New offices for The Local News It's a new era for your Newark Local News as we moved into new premises on Canal Street in Nottingham. The Local News now produces five newspapers a month; Beeston, Clifton, Newark, Rushcliffe and West Bridgford, along with a bi-monthly magazine, in addition to delivering thousands of leaflets per month.

Managing director, Jamie Swift, said: “We are excited to be moving into the new premises. This will allow our business to develop and grow in a fantastic location in Nottingham. The area is a great place to be moving into, with it currently undergoing exciting regeneration. We have been looking for new premises for a while now and this fits our needs perfectly.”

19,000 copies of The Newark Local News are delivered to homes and businesses in Newark, Farndon, Fernwood, Balderton, Coddington and the surrounding villages. Copies are also available in libraries and other public places. The Local News is an independent publication. The format, all editorial and advertisers’ artwork is copyright and must not be reproduced without permission from the Nottingham Local News. East Midlands Trains bosses say their new timetable, which sees earlier and more frequent Sunday services between Lincoln, Newark Castle and Nottingham, will bring “real benefits” to the area.

The changes mean that the first trains in the morning between Lincoln, Newark and Nottingham will operate around 9am instead of the afternoon.

In addition, the frequency will increase to one train per hour in each direction for much of the day.

To mark the occasion, special guests greeted the first service from Lincoln Central to Nottingham with a reception party. As the train pulled in just after 8:45am, Lincoln’s town crier Karen Crow raised the volume with a very traditional Lincolnshire welcome.

Guests then boarded the first of the new Sunday service trains and were met by another reception party with local stakeholders at Newark Castle station just before 9:30am.

Lawrence Bowman, commercial director for East Midlands Trains, told The Local News: “It was fantastic to be joined by local partners and stakeholders to celebrate the launch of the new Sunday service timetable for Lincoln, Newark and Nottingham.

“We set off in style, being seen off by the town crier, which made it a special occasion for everyone involved and on the train.

“We’re confident the new and improved Sunday timetable will bring real benefits for the local communities up and down the Castle Line between Lincoln, Newark and Nottingham.”

Customers using the new Sunday services on the Castle Line will benefit from:

• New hourly services for the majority of the day.

• First service from Lincoln Central to Nottingham will now leave at 08:47 instead of the previous earliest time which was at 15:08.

• First service from Newark Castle to Nottingham will now leave at 09:29 instead of the previous earliest time which was at 15:50:

• First service from Nottingham to Lincoln will now leave at 09:30 instead of the previous earliest time which was at 15:29.

Newark residents have reacted positively to increased frequency, with Gareth saying: “The service before really was quite poor, so this is a big improvement.

“I work shifts in Nottingham and sometimes have to work on a Sunday, so this is a good option for me on the train which wasn’t possible before.”

Sue added: “I like to go shopping in Nottingham on occasions and having more regular Sunday trains gives me more flexibility as to when I can go.”

The demolition of Newark Fire Station is under way to make way for a new £3.1 million facility.

The Boundary Road-based fire station was nearly 50 years old and perimeter fencing has now been put in place on the site.

A 12-month project will see a new building being constructed to serve the Newark community.

This will include a gym, kitchen, breathing apparatus and kit rooms, while a new training tower will also be built.

Ian Pritchard, the service’s head of procurement and resources and the project lead, said: “After a lot of careful planning and a competitive tendering process, we’re really pleased that our appointed contractor has now moved onto the site.

“Work has now started on this exciting project.

“As local residents will be able to see, they haven’t wasted any time in getting to work.

“They will be continuing to progress the demolition over the course of the next few weeks.

“Once this is done, we will be entering the build stage of the project – which we hope will be completed early next year.”

Newark Fire Station was opened on 19th July 1969 and prior to this was

based at the purpose-built Portland Street Fire Station, which was erected in 1889.

The earliest reference to a public fire service in Newark dates from 1837 when the town council minutes record expenditures for maintaining two fire engines kept in the parish church. Newark

Fife Station is staffed by four Wholetime Duty System watches and a Retained Duty System crew. Each of the Wholetime Duty System watches comprises of one watch manager, two crew managers and seven firefighters. Newark’s Retained Crew comprises of one watch manager, two crew managers and 16 firefighters.

Newark Fire Station is demolished to make way for new building The 2017 Newark Festival was a massive success with the local public enjoying three days of music, food and fun.

The highlights of the weekend included Saturday’s performances by UB40 and Level 42.

It was a perfect sunny weekend for the festival and a capacity crowd enjoyed three days of music.

The response from the majority who attended was very positive.

Hayley said: “I thoroughly enjoyed it, loved the line-up and didn’t have any problem with queuing for the entrance, bar or toilets. So proud of Newark. I love my town.”

Pete added: “It was my second year at the festival and I enjoyed it again. Not my favourite artists but I still loved the atmosphere. Level 42 were superb.”

Sarah loved the event but was slightly put off by the price of beer, saying: “We had the best day. The music was fantastic, UB40 were amazing. It wasn’t too crowded and there was a great atmosphere.

“The only downside was the price of the beer. Sadly over-priced, which led us to go out to local bars until the main acts came on later in the evening. If the refreshments are more realistically priced in the future I’d come again.”

Melanie said: “We’ve been to the festival three years running and this year was by far the best. Last year, we loved the acts but hated queuing 50 minutes for a drink.

“This year we opted for premier tickets and it more than exceeded our expectations. We had a brilliant view of the stage, excellent toilets and no more than 10 minutes queuing for the bar.”

Michael added: “This is always a fantastic day out. We go every year to the festival, easy to park and plenty to do in the town centre.

“The nearby pre-concert venue is beautifully positioned next to the river and the castle. They always have good acts, plenty of food and drink outlets, along with a good number of toilets. This is a really good day out.”

A father and daughter for Newark completed the Airfield Anarchy challenge in support of Autism East Midlands and raised £1,086.99 for the charity.

Airfield Anarchy is an acclaimed mud run with an obstacle courses,

which is aptly named the Epic Weekend challenge.

The father and daughter duo, Martyn Boden and Jessica Boden, decided to jump in at the deep end do all three runs’ that make up the Epic Weekend.

Their reason to fund-raise for Autism East Midlands was in support of a young family member.

Martyn said: “Autism is something we, as a family, knew very little about, until the youngest child in our family was diagnosed with it last year, little Ollie.

“This challenge was incredibly demanding both physically and as strength diminished, then mentally.

“We both woke up Sunday morning, injured from the 5k and 10k events on Saturday.

“We were determined to also complete the 10-mile obstacle run.

“Spurred on by the £1,000 in sponsorship, we had something to live up to.

“By the end of the 10-mile event on Sunday, we had given everything we had and were well and truly spent.

“As well as the fundraising achievement, there was also a great sense of personal achievement, that not many dads and daughters get to achieve together.”

The money raised from this event will support Autism East Midlands to continue offering services which help to meet the needs of children and adults with autism, their families and professionals working in the field of autism.

The charity says it “would like to thank Martyn and Jessica Boden for their great effort in raising this money”.

Autism East Midlands are a leading autism charity who exist to ensure people with autism can live their lives with dignity, choice and independence.

Autism East Midlands was started on the initiative of a group of parents in 1968.

Today they are still led by the parents and friends of people with autism.

Autism is a complex, life-long disability which affects the development of communication, social and life skills.

They provide help and support to families and individuals affected by autism from across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, surrounding counties and beyond.

Local resident Paul Burrows has undertaken a golf challenge to raise funds for a local charity, the Children’s Bereavement Centre in Newark.

The Fives Golf Challenge consisted of five rounds of golf in five days, over five counties, travelling 500km to raise £5,000.

The team, which also consisted of his son Tom Burrows and friends Chris Blainey, Tony Hall, Dave Clarke, Nigel Featherstone, Peter Dury and Adam Dury, started their very special event by playing golf

at St Deiniol Bangor course in Gwynedd, Wales.

They went on to play at Holywell Golf Club in Wales, Horsforth in Yorkshire, Boston Golf Club in Lincolnshire, before ending at Norfolk's Gorleston Golf Club.

The team stopped to visit the Children’s Bereavement Centre on their way to the next course.

They had a tour around the centre from Caroline Froggatt, who is the charity's corporate and community engagement co-ordinator.

They were able to see exactly what the money from the golf challenge would go towards.

The Children’s Bereavement Centre supports local children and their families affected by the death of a loved one, terminal illness diagnosis or a parental separation.

The main centre is based ion King’s Road in Newark (NG24 1EW), but they have outreach centres located across Nottinghamshire.

Caroline told The Local News: “Paul and his team have been an absolute joy to work with.

“When someone like Paul asks to put on an event for us, we jump at the chance.

“Not only does it raise funds but it also raises our profile, so ultimately more people know all about our free services.”

Charlotte and Andy Strumnik said: “We both liked the casual, informal approach and felt comfortable asking questions. The course fully

met our expectations and we would definitely recommend to friends.”

Daisy Parent teacher, Katy Mogg (pictured left), said: “It feels such a privilege to be involved with families during such an exciting time in their lives. As a mum of two myself, I love that I am able to share my knowledge and offer unconditional support to mums-to-be and their birthing partners.”

Daisy Birthing and Daisy Baby classes will be also be available in the Newark area from September. Expecting a baby this year? Daisy Parent can help Youngsters to receive donation Children in Newark will be boosted by the donation of over £3,000 to a local charity. Think Children have received £3,369 to fund emotional support for children in the Newark area. The donation was provided by the Santander Foundation.

The grant will enable Think Children to provide support for 15 children aged four to 11 who are showing signs of distress and/or anxiety. The charity’s early, preventative approach aims to support children before issues have the opportunity to escalate, becoming harder and more costly to resolve. The charity will offer one-to-one sessions in the safe and familiar surroundings of the child’s primary school by specially trained emotional well-being facilitators.

Think Children’s development manager, Wendy Walton-Towle, said: “We are delighted to receive this grant, which will enable us to provide an effective proven service that directly benefits local children.”

Newark and Sherwood District Council have said they will consider a change to its approach on the proposed gypsy and traveller site allocation on Quibell’s Lane in Newark - and they will not now press ahead with their plans.

A statement on their website said: “Having considered the representations received as part of the consultation on potential development allocations earlier in the year, the group of members which oversees the development plan process, the Local Development Framework Task Group, has concluded that the site is no longer deliverable.

“It has recommended that full council should not allocate the site for gypsy and travellers and delay the submission of detailed development sites until later in the process, while continuing with consultation on the finalised version of the Core Strategy.

“A report on the issue will be presented to full council in July, which will consider the recommendations and a range of possible alternative approaches for the delivery of gypsy and traveller sites.”

The news has delighted local campaigners who had put together a petition to oppose the plans.

If the project had gone ahead, it would have meant the loss of vital homeless accommodation in the Newark area.

Gill Dawn, who is an independent councillor in Newark, said: “There were very strong local objections for very valid reasons.

“This is a victory for common sense and for the local residents.

“It has been a pleasure to work with this group of residents who have had the support of hundreds of others, including people within the gypsy and traveller community who did not see this site as being suitable or desirable for them.

“Everyone is rightly delighted by this announcement.”

Jane, who is a local resident and lives close to the originally proposed site, said: “I think the right decision has been made and I am pleased the council have come to their senses.

“The proposed site was not suitable and there were risks associated with the site, so this I think it the correct decision to take. I think the campaigners did a fantastic job and I do believe that will have influenced the council’s decision.”

U-turn on proposed gypsy and traveller site Council calms any resident fire fears Newark and Sherwood District Council have moved quickly to reassure local residents following the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy, which is believed to have claimed the lives of at last 79 people.

The statement said: “Newark and Sherwood District Council, along with Newark and Sherwood Homes, have ensured that the council’s housing stock has had fire assessments for any of the known fire risks related to the property construction type.

“We can confirm that regular fire risk assessments are carried out via a fire expert to assess and review for risks on all the council’s communal housing stock and community centres. The most recent review was completed earlier this year and these fire-risk assessments have not revealed any urgent concerns. A specific financial provision for fire-risk improvement works is routinely included in the annual housing capital programme and the findings from the fire-risk assessments are addressed through this programme.

“We can confirm that we do not have the type of cladding on any of our properties similar to that used on the London tower block. Where we have cladding on our council properties, it is of a concrete-rendered finish without air spaces between it and the building’s structure. That said, the council and the company continue to closely monitor the situation and any findings/concerns raised as a result of the London fire will be taken into account and acted upon.”

A self-confessed mature woman, Newark-based personal performance coach Penny Briant has faced a number of unexpected life changes in the last 10 years.

While readily admitting that everyone’s journey is different, Penny (pictured right) firmly believes that being able to draw on her own experiences gives her a unique insight into what her clients are going through.

Proof positive that it is never too late to change direction, Penny was in her late 40s when she gained a degree in Human Resource Management.

Her growing interest in personal development led to further study and in 2015 she qualified as an accredited life coach.

Penny told The Local News: “I wanted to use my new skills, together with the lessons I’d learned on my own journey.

“I wanted to help other women find a way to deal with the kind

of challenges I had faced. Not by giving them advice or telling them what to do – as a coach my role is to motivate them to create their

own future by asking questions that encourage them to focus on where they really want to be.”

Working with women who want to feel empowered and take back control of their lives, Penny helps her clients to identify any limiting beliefs, to replace them with powerful positive beliefs and to clarify their goals.

“Women are incredibly powerful and do amazing things, but all too often in later life we find ourselves losing our way,” she said.

“It’s at times like these that we need a strong circle of support.

“I will always be grateful to the female friends who were there for me through some difficult times.

“Now I feel privileged to be able to give my clients the same support in a professional way.

“In doing so, to help them get the lives they want.”

You can contact Penny by calling 07874 179330, or visit the website at pennyyourcoach.co.uk.

Penny is located at 52 Stodman Street in Newark.

Penny Briant: Helping local women get the lives they want

Summer is well and truly here and there is nothing better than sitting outside in the sunshine relaxing and looking at your garden.

However, all that hard work you have done in the borders with weeding and planting will seem a little disappointing if your

lawn is not looking good, as it is usually the centre piece of most gardens. Prograss are your local, independent lawn company. They specialise in making sure your lawn is green, thick and weed-free, with specialist programs aimed to make sure it peaks for the spring and summer months.

Achieving this is not as simple as putting down a spring weed and feed, especially if there are complications with the lawn such as moss, thatch or soil compaction.

It could save you a lot of wasted time, money and hassle getting Prograss to take care of your lawn for you. The products Prograss use are superior and not available in garden centres.

Cost-wise, a treatment from Prograss will often be less than buying the inferior products yourself.

Prograss also specialise in the mechanical side of lawn work, such as hollow tine aeration, scarification and over-seeding - using heavy-duty commercial machinery to do the job properly.

Prograss staff are experienced and qualified, so you can rest assured that both the application of products and the usage of machinery is always done to the highest standard.

Finally, the most important part of Prograss is the fact that they are independent, unlike most of their lawncare franchise competitors, so the customer service is excellent.

They are easily contactable and any issues or advice will be dealt with straight away and professionally.

No matter what size of lawn or what condition it is in, if you would like a free no-obligation lawn health check and quote, please call Prograss on 01949 837367.

You can also visit the website by logging onto pro-grass.com.

Make the most of your summer with a fantastic Prograss lawn

Former Newark Rugby Club player Greig Tonks won his seventh cap for Scotland in their recent 24-19 victory over Australia in Sydney.

The 28-year-old, who is a former Newark mini and youth player, kicked a penalty in Scotland’s memorable success - his first points in international rugby.

Tonks, who was born in South Africa, moved to England at the age of two and attended Nottingham High School. He joined the Leicester Tigers Academy and went on to have a loan spell with Nottingham Rugby Club.

The full-back has also played for Northampton Saints and Edinburgh - and has been with London Irish since 2016. Tonks is eligible to play for Scotland through his Ayrshire-born mother.

He made his debut for Scotland A in a 13–9 victory against the Saxons on 1 February 2013 in Newcastle. The win was notable for being the A side’s first-ever recorded victory in England.

He made his full international debut for Scotland against Samoa in 2013, starting in the full-back position.

Tonks actually represented England at under-16 level and took part in the England Under-18s tour of Australia. He was a member of the England Under-20s squad for the 2008 Six Nations Championship.

Tonks, who had not appeared for Scotland for over two years, says the win over Australia is the highlight of his career.

“It was incredible. As career highlights go, it will definitely be up there. I would say it’s the highlight,” Tonks said. “The whole week was incredible. I was not originally going to be on the tour and was

then selected quite late. To be picked, then to be starting, then to kick some points and go on to win the game against Australia was something pretty special. It has got to be up there.”

Tonks looks back on his time in the East Midlands as a vital point in his career, saying: “I spent three years at the Tigers when I left school.

“I played for Nottingham on loan and then I went to Northampton for two years. I got more exposure there and it was my big break.”

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend has plenty of praise for the former Newark player.

“He has played very well, we have watched a lot of his games,” Townsend said.

“The way he plays fits in with the way we have been training.

“He is a very good passer and makes good decisions. Greig can step up at first or second receiver and has a good kicking game.”
