NEW YORK=S FINEST
Sackatoga Stable=s Tiz the Law (Constitution) continued his
unconventional path to Louisville in this upside down year with a
jaw-dropping, geared-down 5 1/2-length victory in Saturday=s GI
Runhappy Travers S. at a spectator-free Saratoga.
>TDN Rising Star= Caracaro (Uncle Mo) was second; Max Player
(Honor Code) finished third.
"I've been doing this a long time and I've always wanted to win
the Travers,@ winning trainer Barclay Tagg said. AThis has been in
my head my whole life. And now it happened so it couldn't be
better. You always have some doubt because many different
things can happen. That's always in the back of your mind, but I
was very confident in the horse."
A dozen of Sackatoga's 35 partners in Tiz the Law were on
hand for the Travers at the Spa.
Sackatoga=s operating manager Jack Knowlton added, "It's just
so exciting. To be in the race and to be 1-2, there's a lot of
pressure. We had well-wishers from everywhere. We saw a
performance today that just blows me away. We know we had a
nice horse. We thought we had the best horse. To do what he
did today, we're looking forward to going to Kentucky now [for
the Sept. 5 GI Kentucky Derby].@
Knowlton continued, "It's fabulous. We're getting redemption
17 years later [Funny Cide, the 2003 Kentucky Derby and [GI]
Preakness winner, ran third in the [GI] Belmont S. and did not
run in the Travers]. Tiz won the Belmont, now he won the
Travers.@ Cont. p3
GAMINE GALLOPS AGAIN IN TEST Michael Lund Petersen=s >TDN Rising Star= Gamine (Into
Mischief) turned in her second jaw-dropping performance in a
row as she dominated Saturday=s GI Longines Test S., covering
seven furlongs at Saratoga in a blazing 1:20.83. That time
matched the stakes record set by Lady Tak in 2003, and was
significantly faster than the 1:21.63 last year=s GI Kentucky Oaks
heroine Serengeti Empress (Alternation) went in the GI Ballerina
S. for older fillies a few races earlier.
Kept well off the rail with formidable foe and chief market rival
Venetian Harbor (Munnings) hard held while applying the
pressure through splits of :22.70 and :45.14, last year=s $1.8-
million Fasig-Tipton Midlantic topper shook loose at the top of
the lane and cantered home under a hands-and-heels ride to
cruise under the line seven lengths in front, as easily as her 3-10
odds suggested she might. Cont. p5

Tiz the Law | Sarah Andrew Connections celebrate: Jack Knowlton, left, and Barclay Tagg, rightSarah Andrew
Travers coverage cont. from p1 AIt's quite an accomplishment for our little stable of New
York-breds, for Barclay Tagg training our New York-bred to win
the biggest races in New York,@ Knowlton said. AWe're just
thrilled to death.@
The last out Belmont S. hero left the stalls in good order and
was kept in the clear three wide by Manny Franco as Bob
Baffert=s highly regarded unbeaten West Coast invader Uncle
Chuck (Uncle Mo) led them into the clubhouse turn.
Tiz the Law, sent off as the 1-2 favorite in the seven-horse
affair, chased on the outside in third through an opening quarter
in :23.65 and loomed large in that same position through a
:48.36 half mile. The New York-bred turned up the heat on the
pacesetter, the 5-2 second choice, under confident handling
heading into the far turn and the East vs. West showdown was
set. Or so it seemed.
Franco remained motionless as Luis Saez was already all in
aboard a tiring Uncle Chuck as they hit the quarter pole with Tiz
the Law=s big white blaze now in front. It was only a question of
by how far from there as Franco took a peek under his shoulder.
Tiz the Law, winner of Gulfstream=s GIII Holy Bull S. and the GI
Curlin Florida Derby in his two other appearances earlier this
term, was in complete control as they straightened for home.
Franco briefly shook the reins and a single backhander from
there was all it took as he eased down late on the early
Kentucky Derby favorite in the lane to win for fun.
"He gave me chills,@ Franco said of the $110,000 Fasig-Tipton
SARAUG yearling graduate. AWhen I pressed the button, he just
took off. He accelerated really hard. After that, I took a peek
back and he was going away and I just saved horse.@
Tiz the Law will look to collect the second jewel of this
rescheduled COVID-19 Triple Crown on the first Saturday in
September.
"I don't think we'll change a whole lot,@ Tagg said. AWe'll give
him 10 days of easiness and then get a few more breezes in him
before we go out there. That's about all we can do."
Pedigree Notes:
Tiz the Law became just the third New York-bred Travers
winner and first since Thunder Rumble in 1992. Constitution,
the runaway leading second-crop sire of 2020 by earnings and
heir-apparent to his sire Tapit, is the sire of Tiz the Law and five
other black-type winners, including Alexandria, who won the
Best of Ohio Miss Ohio S. also on Saturday, and Laura=s Light,
who won the July 25 GII San Clemente S. at Del Mar. Five of
Constitution=s six stakes winners are graded and five more of his
eight additional stakes horses are graded-placed. Constitution

[Baffert] and the owners for the opportunity. Bob said she
breaks well and to kind of let her do her thing. If another horse
wants to go too fast, we just let her sit second and she'll be fine
sitting second. But she broke so good and [Venetian Harbor]
kind of stayed right next to me and didn't press the pace very
much, so I just kind of let her do what she wanted to do the first
quarter-mile. Once we got to the turn, I let her get into the turn
and she got really comfortable and really smooth and got away
from the other horse and kept going. Very nice.@
Gamine brought a record price at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic
2-Year-Olds in Training Sale last term off a bullet :10 flat breeze,
but missed some time in the summer of her juvenile season
before getting back to working in late November. She debuted a
6 1/4-length winner sprinting at Santa Anita Mar. 7, and crossed
the line a neck to the good of eventual GI Central Bank Ashland
S. heroine Speech (Mr Speaker) in a two-turn Oaklawn optional
claimer May 2, only to be later disqualified from purse money
for a Lidocaine positive. The bay could not have been more

dominant in the GI Longines Acorn S. over a one-turn mile at
Belmont June 20, running up the score to 18 3/4 lengths while
earning a 110 Beyer Speed Figure.
"She's rising straight to the top,@ said assistant trainer Jimmy
Barnes. AFor what she's accomplished so far for such a lightly
raced filly, we look forward to stretching her out and see what
comes of that."
Gamine is expected to take on a strong field in next month=s
nine-furlong GI Kentucky Oaks.
Pedigree Notes:
Spendthrift stalwart Into Mischief is the leading general sire in
North America this year, and was represented earlier in the day
Saturday by impressive debuting juvenile Mutasaabeq, who
garnered the >TDN Rising Star= distinction.
Gamine=s New York-bred dam Peggy Jane was a $200,000

published breeze at Pimlico Saturday morning (4f, :52.80, 9/9).
Gamine has a yearling half-sister by Ghostzapper and a foal half-

SERENGETI EMPRESS ALL HEART IN
BALLERINA
Last year=s GI Longines Kentucky Oaks heroine Serengeti
Empress (Alternation) punched her ticket to the GI Breeders=
Cup Filly & Mare Sprint with an ultra-game, front-running
performance while turning back in distance in Saturday=s GI
Ballerina S. at the Spa.
The dark bay wasn=t off to the sharpest of beginnings from her
rail draw, but was quarter-horsed to the front by Luis Saez to
hold a narrow advantage over the pride of Mexico Letruska
(Super Saver) through an opening quarter in a blazing :21.75.
Getting scrubbed on and appearing to be in deep water with
the others swarming in--including favored California invader
Bellafina (Quality Road)--as they hit the quarter pole, Serengeti
Empress wasn=t going out without a fight.
Longshot Victim of Love (Speightstown) began to shoot up the

inside while Bellafina took dead aim to the outside of Serengeti
Empress as they straightened for home.
Last term=s GI Breeders= Cup Distaff third-place finisher kept on
finding while drifting some down the stretch, however, and
refused to lose while stopping the timer in a sparkling 1:21.63.
"That was very valiant,@ winning trainer Tom Amoss said. AShe
didn't break on time. She was a step slow, but when you go
seven-eighths and you have that opening on the track before
you hit the main track, you get an opportunity to catch up, and
she did. She was able to regain her position, but I really thought
that opening half-mile in [:43.74] was going to be her doing in. I
thought we learned a lot about her today. What we learned is
that this is a real good middle-distance filly.@
A too-good-to-lose second behind brilliant two-time champion
Covfefe (Into Mischief) in last year=s GI Longines Test S. at the
Spa, the Joel Politi colorbearer ran away and hid from them in a
sloppy renewal of Oaklawn=s GII Azeri S. Mar. 14, but
disappointed in her next two trips to the post.
She entered the Ballerina following double-digit defeats in
both Oaklawn=s GI Apple Blossom H. Apr. 18 and the GII Fleur de
Lis S. at Churchill last time June 27.
The Ballerina was her first start around one turn since last
year=s Test.
"Speed is her game, and she used it today,@ Amoss said. AShe
was able to hold off a very good filly from California. I look
forward to staying at the seven-eighths distance, maybe getting
one more start in her before the Breeders' Cup."
Pedigree Notes:
Serengeti Empress is the top runner for four-time graded
winner Alternation, whose other graded victor from eight black-
type winners is 2018 GIII Super Derby winner Limation.

Other sires in his immediate family to stand at Pin Oak include

as well as Alternation=s current barnmate Broken Vow

reported foals out of the unraced Bernardini mare Havisham,
who hails from an Argentinean family although she was foaled in
the U.S. Havisham was sold at the 2016 Keeneland November
sale when Serengeti Empress was a weanling who brought
$25,000 at the same sale. Carrying a full-sister to the Ballerina

graded stakes winner Saturday, while also providing young
trainer Ryan Hanson with his first graded trophy. The bay defied
21-1 odds to run away with a 4 1/2-furlong heat June 21 over
the much pricier Ambivalent (Constitution), and was backed as
the best local hope to defeat heavily favored Wesley Ward
trainee Roderick (Into Mischief).
Bouncing out abruptly, Weston was shuffled back in the early
scramble for position but moved back up to be part of the
leading vanguard with Girther along the rail and the chalk three
deep. Roderick backed out of it abruptly heading for home, and
Weston and Girther battled it out at the top of the lane as
Ambivalent appeared a major danger for the stretch drive.
Ambivalent shifted in sharply and bumped with Sonic Brees,
however, effectively leaving the top two to sort it out. Girther
looked the winner until late, as Weston made one last lunge to
notch the decision. Ambivalent was subsequently disqualified
from third to fourth.
ABoy, I had to work hard for that one. But I=m glad I did,@ said
winning rider Drayden Van Dyke. AI was happy to win it for Ryan
Hanson. He=s such a kind man and a good horse trainer. And this
horse showed some class, too. Ryan told me he never got to
paddock him [before the race], but he was just standing in there
like an old pro. I knew I got there in the end and I=m real glad I
did.@
Hanson added, AHe broke sharp, just like we wanted him to,
but then it looked like he just sat there for a minute. I got a little
nervous when he got shuffled back, but then he got back up
there and fought on. The time was not very impressive, but that
doesn=t matter. I didn=t think we were going to win it. I thought
we=d be second to the Peter Miller horse [Girther], who had had
a trip over the track. But I=m just really happy. We=ll see how he
looks tomorrow and let him tell us what to do [regarding the GI
Mar Futurity Sept. 7]. @
Pedigree Notes:
A winner of both of his Irish starts at two for Aidan O=Brien and
owner/breeder Evelyn Stockwell, Hit It a Bomb overcame the
14 hole to take the 2015 GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf at
Keeneland. He was twice Group-placed back overseas as a
sophomore, is a full-brother to Europe=s 2016 champion
2-year-old filly Brave Anna.
Weston is the 19th graded stakes winner out of a Dixie Union
mare. Dam Elke was MSP as a juvenile, and was successful both
dirt sprinting and turf routing. Third dam Trumpet=s Blare was a
GISW juvenile. Weston has a yearling half-sister by Tapiture and
a foal half-brother by Speightster.
Runner-up Girther=s sire Brody=s Cause also stands at
Spendthrift and is represented by first 2-year-olds this year.

Bodhicitta, winless in her first seven starts overseas for trainer
M. D. O'Callaghan, has found her calling here in the States.
The 60,000gns 2019 Tattersalls Guineas Breeze-Up & HIT Sale
acquisition put together back-to-back optional claiming victories
over the Santa Anita lawn Feb. 1 and Mar. 8, then completed
the exacta at 14-1 in the GI Gamely S. last time May 25.
Bodhicitta saved ground in fourth passing the stands for the
first time here. She raced covered up just behind the leaders in
third down the backstretch, tipped out three deep as they
straightened and kicked home full of run to get up right on the
wire.
AThe race went about like I thought it would, I didn=t see much
speed in the race,@ winning trainer Richard Baltas said. AShe has
more tactical speed than some of the horses, like [favored
defending Yellow Ribbon winner] Beau Recall and others who
come from the back. [Flavien Prat] saved a lot of ground and we
needed all of it. When he won with her a while back, he said
>This is my next Vasilika.= It means a lot because he=s ridden a lot
of good horses. We may go in the [GII John C. Mabee S. Sept.

Pedigree Notes:
Bodhicitta (GB) is one of 42 black-type winners--exactly half of
which are graded--for the British-bred and British-standing
Showcasing. The Oasis Dream (GB) stallion, who hails from the
Danzig line, had turf success in California previously with Prize
Exhibit (GB), who won four graded stakes at Santa Anita and Del
Mar and was second in the 2015 Yellow Ribbon. Bodhicitta is out
of a Teofilo (Ire) mare, who produced one foal after the Yellow
Ribbon winner--the winning sophomore Littledidyouknow (Ire)
(Due Diligence)--but nothing reported since, in spite of selling at
Tattersalls in 2018 for 4,500gns in foal to Bungle Inthejungle
(GB). Teofilo, a son of Galileo (Ire), is the broodmare sire of nine
stakes winners to date. Bodhicitta is inbred top and bottom to
Sorbus (Ire) (Busted {GB}), second in the 1978 G1 Irish One
Thousand Guineas, G1 Irish Guinness Oaks, G1 Irish St. Leger,
and G1 Yorkshire Oaks. Sorbus produced five black-type winners
and it=s through two of those stakes-winning daughters that
Bodhicitta is inbred.

American Sailor sprung the upset as the beneficiary of a
disqualification in the Troy Saturday. Seizing the early
advantage, the chestnut doled out a first quarter in :21.92 with
Shekky Shebaz stalking from second. Showing the way into the
lane, the 8-year-old was overtaken by favored Imprimis in mid-
stretch and crossed the line 2 1/4 lengths behind that rival in
second. It was just a head back to Shekky Shebaz in third.
Following a stewards= inquiry, Imprimis was disqualified for
interfering with Shekky Shebaz in the lane and placed third.
American Sailor inherited the win and Shekky Shebaz was
promoted to second. It was the first graded stakes victory and
first Saratoga win for conditioner Wayne Potts, who is based at
Laurel Park.
AI=m speechless,@ said an emotional Potts during the post-race
interview. AThis is my first graded win. My clients have stood
behind me through the years with claimers and this is where we
are at.@
He continued, AI was worried about the late runners coming to
get me, but our horse was out pretty quick. We gave him the
winter off. I had him for about three years and he really needed
a break. He came back at Laurel and ran a fantastic race in his
first race back and then he ran in the Wolf Hill, where he got
beat by a nice horse for [Steve] Asmussen. He came out of it
well, so I was confident when I brought him here.@
AI don=t want to take anything away from my horse, he put in a
huge effort today,@ winning rider Tyler Gaffalione said. AIt=s not
the way you want to get it done, but he put in a big effort and
he=s definitely deserving.@
As for the disqualification, Imprimis= rider Jose Ortiz said,
AWhen I hit him the first time, that=s when he switched leads
and I think that=s when I bothered the other horse. It looked like
[Imprimis] was the best horse, but probably did cost the other
horse [Shekky Shebaz] a position.@

Having played a supporting role in each of her last six starts,
My Sister Nat finally put everything together to collect her first
U.S. victory in Saturday=s GIII Waya S. at Saratoga. Settled at the
back of the field behind an unhurried early pace set by fellow
Chad Brown trainee Fools Gold, the half-sister to 2018 champion
turf mare Sistercharlie (Ire) (Myboycharlie {Ire}) took position
along the inside down the backstretch and maintained contact
with the field in fifth through a mile in 1:41.76. Picking up the
tempo while looking for running room leaving the backstretch,
the French-bred was taken to the outside by Jose Ortiz
approaching the quarter pole and was four wide turning for
home. While Fools Gold continued to hang tough down the
stretch, favored Mrs. Sippy and My Sister Nat continued to draw
her in, with the latter offering the best turn of foot late to score
by a half-length over Mrs. Sippy. Fools Gold was a clear third.
AWe saved ground in the first two turns and in the third turn I
started looking for a place to go,@ explained Ortiz. AChad always

tells me in three-turn races to save ground in two and in the
third do whatever you want. I started working my way out and
I'm glad it worked out.@
Added Brown, AIn these types of races, there's not a lot of
pace. I thought Jose came to the paddock with a really good
plan. He said he was going to try and stay closer and he was able
to find the one during the race to follow which I thought was
smart. We didn't change her style, but we stayed with the pack
this time and didn't let her fall too far back. Jose deserves a lot
of credit for that.@
On the board in four of five French starts at two, including a
victory in Longchamp=s G3 Prix de Tarragon, My Sister Nat was
purchased privately by Peter Brant following her 2018
campaign, resurfacing with a third for Brown in a Belmont
optional claimer followed by a troubled fifth going 1 3/16-miles
at the Spa last summer. Given time off following those efforts,
she finished a desperate neck back in second in the 11-furlong
GIII Long Island S. at Aqueduct in November to close out the
season. In her sole prior start this term, the 5-year-old finished
behind the classy Mean Mary (Scat Daddy) in Belmont=s GII New
York S. over 10 furlongs June 27.
AI have to thank [owner] Peter [Brant] for keeping her in
training,@ said Brown. AShe's a half to Sistercharlie and it would
have been easy to retire her. We found that it took all the way
to the end of last year for her to really acclimate. We got her in
a three-turn race at the end of the year in the Long Island at
Aqueduct and she should have won, but she got in a lot of
trouble. In only her second three-turn race, we saw what she
can do, and we're going to try and keep her in races like this."
Pedigree Notes:
In winning her second group/graded event, My Sister Nat
became only the third most accomplished foal out of her dam,
the Galileo (Ire) mare Starlet=s Sister (Ire), who never won a race
herself. The mare=s other two foals to race are 2018 champion
turf female Sistercharlie (Ire) (Myboycharlie {Ire}), a seven-time
Grade I winner who was last seen finishing third in the GII
Ballston Spa S. July 25 at Saratoga, and 2019 French champion 3-
year-old Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), who captured his second
Group 1 victory in the June 14 Prix Ganay at Chantilly. Starlet=s
Sister has produced three foals since the graded/group trio,
including a Fastnet Rock (Aus) colt named Parliament (GB), who
sold at last year=s Arqana August yearling sale for i700,000 to
David Redvers, and a now-yearling filly by Dubawi (Ire). My
Sister Nat is by County Cork=s Rathbarry Stud stallion
Acclamation (GB), whose 24 graded winners and 54 black-type
winners include the English and French champion Marsha (Ire),
who set a European record for a Thoroughbred at auction when
she brought 6,000,000gns at Tattersalls in 2017.
STREAKING ART COLLECTOR ON DISPLAY IN
RUNHAPPY ELLIS PARK DERBY
All eyes will be on Art Collector (Bernardini) as he looks to go
four-for-four on the year and punch his ticket to Louisville in
Sunday=s $200,000 Runhappy Ellis Park Derby.
After airing over subsequent GIII Indiana Derby hero Shared
Sense (Street Sense) in an optional claimer at Churchill Downs
June 13, the Bruce Lunsford homebred followed up with
another impressive performance capturing Keeneland=s GII
Toyota Blue Grass S. July 11, his second straight victory with a
triple digit Beyer Speed Figure.
AI=m just hoping for a good clean trip more than anything,@
trainer Tom Drury, Jr. said. AWe want this race to be a stepping
stone for the next one. I=d love to see him go down there and
get a good, clean, easy trip wherever he may finish and then be
able to move forward from that race.@
A full field will be standing in the way of the 4-5 morning-line
favorite in the 1 1/8-mile contest, which offers GI Kentucky
Derby qualifying points of 50-20-10-5.
Dean Martini (Cairo Prince), claimed by Tom Amoss for
$50,000 three starts back in his maiden breaker at Churchill
Downs in May, posted a breakthrough victory in the GIII Ohio
Derby last time June 27.
The aforementioned Shared Sense, 6 1/2 lengths adrift Art
Collector in Louisville, delivered as the 5-2 favorite with a three-
length decision in Indiana last time. He will have to work out a
trip from post 12, however.

Smooth Like Strait | Coady
Ed DeRosa of Brisnet.com takes on TDN=s Steve Sherack and
Brian DiDonato as they handicap Triple Crown prep races plus
the big three races themselves. The three will make $100
Win/Place bets in the preps and $200 in/Place bets in the
Belmont, Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Highest bankroll at the
end wins.
DeRosa - Bankroll: $5230 - GI Runhappy Travers S. Result -Tiz
the Law stamped himself as the Kentucky Derby favorite.
Runhappy Ellis Park Derby - Art Collector has done everything
right as a 3-year-old. He=s stretched out, he=s stalked, he=s
pounced, he=s drawn off. This is an impressive horse to watch
race. He doesn=t idle, he doesn=t wait on competition, he doesn=t
get lazy. He=s all business and it=s led to devastating wins over
good competition. There=s no reason to think that will not
continue as his path to the Kentucky Derby winds through the
Pea Patch. My hope for this weekend is that both Tiz the Law
and Art Collector win as impressively as they have in their other
starts this year to set up an incredible showdown beneath the
TwinSpires in 27 days. Selection: #4 Art Collector (4-5).
Sherack - Bankroll: $3800 - GI Runhappy Travers S. Result -
Now that was impressive. Tiz the Law is certainly the real deal.
Runhappy Ellis Park Derby - Art Collector isn=t supposed to lose
this race, but I=m running out of time to find a longshot. I made
my case for Sprawl in the GIII Ohio Derby, and while he didn=t
run awful, he didn=t post the breakthrough performance I was
looking for, either. I=ll try him one more time at what has to be a
much bigger price than that 3-1 he was last time. Selection: #3
Sprawl (15-1).
DiDonato - Bankroll: $5500 - GI Runhappy Travers S. Result -
WowCthat was really something. Expected Tiz the Law to win,
but didn=t imagine him winning like THAT.
Runhappy Ellis Park Derby - I might regret it, but I just couldn=t
chalk out three times in a row. Art Collector=s the most likely
winner, but this is very much a prep for him given where he
stands on points. He=s worked out extremely good trips in all
three wins since the trainer change, and it=s possible that he
could get sucked into a solid early pace this time. If the pace
does get hot, Shared Sense is the horse I want. He seems to be
on the improve and clearly likes the distance. Admittedly, the
post isn=t great for this configuration. Selection: #12 Shared
Sense (12-1).

to the seaside oval as the likely favorite in Sunday=s GII LaJolla H.
The race is the middle leg of Del Mar=s 3-year-old turf series
which concludes with the GII Del Mar Derby over nine furlongs
Sept. 6.
Disappointing when no better than fourth as the 13-10
favorite in the Eddie Logan S. at Santa Anita Dec. 29, the bay colt
was a pacesetting runner-up to Hariboux (GB) (Havana Gold
{Ire}) in the Feb. 29 Pasadena S. The form of that race was
franked when Hariboux doubled up in the Cinema S. in June,
while Smooth Like Strait took his show to Churchill for a handy
success in the May 23 War Chant S. Third home that day was
Field Pass (Lemon Drop Kid), who has since added a pair of
black-type scores, including Keeneland=s GIII Transylvania S. July
12.
Smooth Like Strait carries top weight of 124 pounds, as does
Eclipse Award-winning juvenile Storm the Court (Court Vision),
who makes his turf debut in the LaJolla. On the fringes on the
Triple Crown trail this season, the bay was third to Authentic
(Into Mischief) in the GII San Felipe S. in March and filled the
same spot behind Dean Martini (Cairo Prince) when last seen in
the GIII Ohio Derby June 27. He is bred to handle this surface
switch, as his sire was the upset winner of the GI Breeders= Cup
Mile, while his dam sire Tejano Run--perhaps best known for his
runner-up effort in the 1995 GI Kentucky Derby--defeated the
likes of Sandpit (Brz) (Baynoun {Ire}) in the GIII Fort Harrod S. at
Keeneland on the grass the following season. Storm the Court
breezed five furlongs on the turf at Del Mar July 26 in an easy
1:02 flat around the dogs in the company of his Grade III-placed
stablemate Royal Act (American Pharoah).
Kanderel (Candy Ride {Arg}), bred on the cross over Storm Cat
responsible for the likes of Horse of the Year Gun Runner and
champion Shared Belief, among others, defeated
Ajourneytofreedom (Hard Spun) by a head in the June 13
Alcatraz S. at Golden Gate, but proved he could class up here
with a solid runner-up effort to the very talented Hit the Road
(More Than Ready) in the restricted Oceanside S. over a mile
July 10.
NOW 10 AND OFF FOR 28 MONTHS, GREEN
GRATTO ENTERED IN CLAIMER AT
MONMOUTH
by Bill Finley
Considering his age and all he accomplished in his career,
Green Gratto (Here's Zealous) would have seemed to have
earned a cushy retirement. Instead, he is scheduled to run in a
an optional claimer--in for the $20,000 tag--for New Jersey
breds Sunday at Monmouth, his first start since Apr. 19, 2018.
It's the latest twist in a controversial story that began when he
returned to the racetrack in November, which caused an uproar
on social media from critics who felt it was improper and too
risky to run the horse again.
During his career, Green Gratto was a feel-good story. He was
more or less given away for free to owners Anthony and Gaston
Grant, whose only initial financial obligation was to pay the
horse's bills while he was being broken and trained in Florida.
The Grants are natives of Jamaica and Gaston, his trainer,
doubled as a UPS driver working out of Brooklyn.
Green Gratto was not exactly a star but he kept showing up.
He raced 65 times and won nine times, including five stakes. The
highlight was the 2017 GI Carter H. He also won the 2015 GIII
Fall Highweight H., the 2017 GIII Toboggan S., the 2015
Gravesend S. and the 2016 Hockessin S.
Green Gratto never won again after the Carter, losing 12
straight. He was retired in 2018 and sold, with the plan being for
him to stand at stud in New York at Total Bloodstock Farm. It
turned out that he was infertile.
According to current owner Norman Wilson, Green Gratto was
owned at the time by a partnership. He said the horse wound up
in Kentucky before being sent to his farm in Ocala. The plan was
for Wilson to look after the horse for a brief time and then put

him in a livestock sale in Ocala in order to dissolve the
partnership. Wilson said that when Green Gratto arrived at his
farm it was clear he had not been given proper treatment and
care.
"When the horse was sent to us he was skin and bones,"
Wilson said. "He looked awful. His mane was long with knots in
it. His tale was knotted. It looked like he had no care
whatsoever."
Not wanting Green Gratto to fall into the wrong hands, Wilson
and his wife Liz wound up buying him at the auction held by
Florida Horse Sales.
"There were obviously the wrong kind of buyers there, so we
purchased him," said Wilson, who would not disclose how much
he paid for the horse. "There was somebody there looking to
buy him and turn him out in a field with quarter horse mares.
That horrified us. As aggressive as he was, it would have killed
him."
Wilson says that Green Gratto did not enjoy being away from
the racetrack and that he was overly aggressive and constantly
nervous.
"This is a horse that really enjoys his job," Wilson said. "After a
while we decided to put him in training because he wasn't a
happy horse. He put on 100 pounds when we started training
him."
By November, Green Gratto was back at the racetrack. Trained
at the time by Tamara Levy, he had his first recorded workout
since 2018 on Nov. 10, 2019 at Gulfstream Park West. The work
didn't go unnoticed and sparked a number of posts on social
media critical of the Wilsons and Levy for bringing the horse
back to the races. Gulfstream management stepped in and told
the Wilsons that Green Gratto would not be allowed to race at
Gulfstream or Gulfstream Park West.
"It was after his first published work that social media went
nuts," Wilson said. "That cost us a lot of time and aggravation.
Gulfstream caved into social media and let social media run their
racetrack. We were told to move our horse even though there
were other horses there in almost the same situation and the
same age. There were horses down there almost the same age
and after long layoffs that were running. They just weren't as
popular as this horse."
So far, Green Gratto's entry at Monmouth has gone largely
unnoticed on social media.
When asked if he understood why people were upset that he
was trying to run the horse again, Wilson said: "Everybody is
entitled to their opinion. I just have a different opinion than they
do, We are looking to have a little bit of fun and let him enjoy his
racing career again. We are 100% for the horse. I just share a
different opinion on when it's time to stop on him."
Green Gratto was transferred to the barn of trainer Kathleen
O'Connell and arrived at Monmouth in June. He's had three
workouts there, all of them at a half-mile. O'Connell is a
respected trainer, which played into Monmouth's decision to
clear the horse to run.
"I spoke with Kathleen earlier this year," Monmouth racing
secretary John Heims said. "She advised me she had this horse
and the horse was doing fantastic. >K.O.' is a terrific
horsewoman and not someone I would ever question. She
knows what she is doing. When the entry came in we weren't
concerned because I had spoke to her earlier about this. We
have other 10-year-olds that run here. We have a horse,
Visionary Ruler (Pollard's Vision), who is 10 and keeps running
and he just doesn't quit."
Ten is the maximum age allowed for a horse to run at
Monmouth.
The steep drop in class may not be enough for Green Gratto to
win Sunday. No doubt taking into account his age and the long
layoff, the morning line maker has made him 8-1.
"I don't know what to expect." Wilson said. "I would imagine
he will perform well. It's the first back, so you never know. I
expect he will do halfway decent. I don't think we will be
embarrassed."
The purse for Monmouth's race is $65,265, and the Wilsons
stand to take home over $35,000 if their horses wins. It would
be a nice payoff for a horse they likely acquired for very little
money. But Wilson said the chance to make some money is not
all that motivates him.
"I I have said many times that he has a forever home with us,"
he said. "People may think we are strictly doing this for profit,
but that's not the case. I am a sportsman and I enjoy the game. I
like race horses. He is a good horse and there is nothing wrong
with him. He is sound. He may not come back like we want or he
may come back better. Who knows? It is a gamble. But I feel it is
safe and I wouldn't do this if I didn't think it was a safe bet to try

Moonlight d=Oro as a KEESEP yearling | Keeneland
INTO MISCHIEF FIRSTER RUNS AWAY TO
>RISING STAR=-DOM ON SARATOGA DEBUTby Alan Carasso
Hammered down to 85 cents on the dollar off a worktab that
shouted ready, Shadwell Stable=s Mutasaabeq (Into Mischief)
was not the quickest out, but was fastest late as he raced away
to score by 4 1/2 lengths and the >TDN Rising Star= designation.
Drawn widest in the field of seven, the $425,000 Keeneland
November weanling acquisition broke near the back of the pack
and was under a hustling Luis Saez ride as American Gentleman
(American Pharoah) showed the way through an opening couple
of furlongs in :22.21. Responding to his jockey=s busy ride,
Mutasaabeq rolled up four deep on the turn, challenged wide
and hit the front in upper stretch and ran up the score from
there. The Wesley Ward-trained filly Guana Cay (Air Force Blue)
plugged on gamely late to be second.
While Mutasaabeq legged up for the debut over the Belmont
training track in June and over the Oklahoma Training Track for
his first couple of breezes in July, it was over the Saratoga main
track that he truly showed some spark, working a best-of-17 five
furlongs from the gate in :59 2/5 July 19 and capping his tab
with a half-mile from the gate that was clocked in :46 2/5 (1/50)
Aug. 1
A 16th Rising Star for Into Mischief, Mutasaabeq is out of a
half-sister to MGSW Cool Cowboy (Kodiak Kowboy) who was
acquired with this foal in utero for $180,000 at the 2018
Keeneland January sale. The winner has a yearling half-sister by
California Chrome and a foal half-brother by Uncle Mo.
Downside Scenario was most recently bred to Into Mischief=s
GI Xpressbet Florida Derby-winning son Audible.

SECOND CHANCES: MOONLIGHT D=OROby Steve Sherack
In this continuing series, TDN=s Senior Editor Steve Sherack
catches up with the connections of promising maidens to keep
on your radar.
Moonlight d=Oro (f, 2, Medaglia d=OroBVenetian Sonata, by
Bernardini) stamped herself as a 2-year-old to watch after
rolling home through traffic to finish a strong second as the
3-5 favorite in her five-furlong unveiling at Del Mar Aug. 2

Second Chances cont.
Trained by Hall of Famer Richard Mandella, the $620,000
Keeneland September yearling was outsprinted early and ridden
in eighth heading into the far turn. On the move with a wall of
horses in front of her as they straightened, the
MyRacehorse.com and Spendthrift Farm colorbearer showed
plenty of maturity gamely splitting horses in the stretch and
rallied smartly late, coming home a field-best final eighth in
:12.75, finishing 1 1/4 lengths adrift Roll Up Mo Money (Uncle
Mo). Moonlight d=Oro earned a 49 Beyer Speed Figure for the
effort.
AWe knew going into the race that breaking out of the gate
wasn=t necessarily her strong suit and all day long I was kind of
pacing around the house going, >Man, I wish this race was 5 1/2
or six furlongs,=@ MyRacehorse's Racing Operations and Owner
Experience Manager Joe Mishak said.
AOnce she didn=t catch a flyer, it really stacked against her
going five furlongs. She settled and took plenty of dirt in her face
though. It took her a quarter of a mile or three furlongs to figure
out what was going on, but the way she did respond and work
her way in between horses was very impressive. It=s so
intimidating for even older horses to do that, let alone a 2-year-
old that doesn=t have the greatest size, either. That was really
encouraging, especially knowing she wants to go a longer route
of ground.@
Bred in Kentucky by Stonehaven Steadings, Moonlight d=Oro is
a half-sister to impressive debut winner Olive Branch
(Speightstown), who finished third in her final career start in
Saratoga=s GII Adirondack S. as a juvenile for the late Rick
Violette. Moonlight d=Oro was produced by a winning full-sister
to GSW Wilburn and SW & GSP La Appassionata; and a half-
sister to GSW Beethoven (Sky Mesa).
As for what=s next Moonlight d=Oro, Mishak said, AAt this stage
of the game, it will probably be the end of the Del Mar meet. I=m
sure there will be options there, whether it=s another maiden
going six or 6 1/2 furlongs or even a race like the [GI Del Mar]
Debutante [Sept. 6]. It=s a discussion of how she works the next
few times and getting together with Richard to see where he
thinks she might be best suited.@
Previous standouts featured in >Second Chances= include:
GI Runhappy Santa Anita Derby winner Honor A. P. (Honor
Code), Royal Ascot G2 Norfolk S. runner-up Golden Pal (Uncle
Mo), MGISW and >TDN Rising Star= Paradise Woods (Union
Rags), GSW Backyard Heaven (Tizway), MSW and >TDN Rising
Star= Gidu (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of
Youth S. runner-up Candy Tycoon (Twirling Candy).

Alexandria was far from the most-anticipated stakes entrant
for her sire Saturday afternoon, but she kicked things off
emphatically while providing her connections with victories in
both juvenile events on the card. The chestnut dominated state-
bred maidens in the slop at Belterra June 23, and made good on
1-9 backing to annex the July 10 Tah Dah S. there. Kept separate
from seemingly faster stablemate Esplanade (Daredevil)--who
easily handled the boys one race earlier--the chestnut chased
between foes early while in a bit tight before taking over on the
turn. She widened at will in the lane despite being very slow to
switch leads. The winner has a yearling full-sister and a foal half-

County Final topped last month=s Fasig-Tipton July Horses of
Racing Age sale at $475,0000 last month, and began chipping
away at that investment first time for the new connections here.
A four-length debut winner turf sprinting for trainer John Ennis
at Churchill June 5, the grey was second in the GIII Bashford
Manor S. on the Louisville dirt 22 days later behind soon-to-be
stablemate Cazadero (Street Sense). While Cazadero could only
manage fifth in Friday=s GII Saratoga Special S., fellow Steve
Asmussen pupil Jackie=s Warrior (Maclean=s Music) impressed in
that event. With G2 Norfolk S. runner-up Golden Pal (Uncle Mo)
and well-regarded Fauci (Malibu Moon) scratched when the
race came off the grass, County Final=s main challenge appeared
likely to come from those two=s stablemate Spicy Marg, an
unraced Wesley Ward-trained filly. Spicy Marg blasted out of the
gate, and quickly cleared as County Final was ridden along to
keep up. The favorite came under the whip around the bend as
the frontrunner floated him wide at the top of the stretch, but
County Final was undeterred and leveled off nicely in the lane to
cruise by his tiring foe in hand.

RISKY MISCHIEF (f, 3, Into Mischief--Risky Rachel {MSW,
$493,736}, by Limehouse) garnered >TDN Rising Star= status
when smoking a field of state-bred maidens by 7 1/2 lengths on
debut last July, but was shelved after finishing a distant sixth in
the GI Spinaway S. Sept. 1. The $350,00 Fasig-Tipton New York-
Bred yearling showed the way in her return to action in the
Bouwerie S. downstate June 28, but weakened to finish fourth
of five. A 7-2 gamble in this first turf try, Risky Mischief was
handy to the early pace before drifting back a spot or two to sit
in centerfield for the run around the turn. Quietly handled
approaching the stretch, she gained ground towards the inside,
angled out into the clear with a sixteenth to the wire and was
home a half-length winner. Even-money Light In the Sky (Tale of
the Cat) was one of the last into stride and rallied strongly down
the grandstand side, but the wire came too soon.
The multiple stakes-winning Risky Rachel is a daughter of GSW

Port Guillaume is three lengths the best in the Hocquart | Scoop Dyga
PORT GUILLAUME BACKON TOP IN NORMANDY
Claudio Marzocco, Bernard Benaych and Jean-Claude Rouget=s
Port Guillaume (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) lost his unbeaten tag when a
never-nearer fifth in Chantilly=s July 5 G1 Prix du Jockey Club and
bounced back in style, racing in the Marzocco silks, to annex
Saturday=s G2 Prix Hocquart Longines at Deauville. Unraced as a
juvenile, he was an early riser this term with victories at Cagnes-
sur-Mer in January and February and continued in similar vein
post-lockdown with a May 12 Saint-Cloud conditions success
before suffering his lone reversal last month. On the front end
passing the judge first time and remaining there throughout the
12 1/2-furlong stamina test, the 7-5 favourite was nudged along
soon after turning for home and stayed on strongly under mild
rousting inside the final quarter mile to score by three lengths,
with Ketil (Karakontie {Jpn}) edging out Pao Alto (Fr) (Intello
{Ger}) by a nose for second.
AHe ran a great race in the Prix du Jockey Club, but had been
left with too much to do,@ said trainer Jean-Claude Rouget. AI
didn=t want to take any chances this time and wanted a positive
ride to avoid being caught in a race with no pace so that class
could tell. It went as I had hoped and he is a nice colt who will
now head straight to the [Sept. 13] G1 Grand Prix de Paris [at
ParisLongchamp].@
Cont. p2
EARTHLIGHT PUT TO THE TEST Godolphin=s unbeaten Earthlight (Ire) (Shamardal) faces his
first major test of 2020 in a strong renewal of Sunday=s 6 1/2-
furlong G1 LARC Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville. Facing the
older sprinters for the first time, last year=s G1 Prix Morny and
G1 Middle Park S. winner also meets Golden Horde (Ire) (Lethal
Force {Ire}) who was a neck behind him when runner-up in the
Middle Park at Newmarket in September. There was no sign that
his delayed start to the season had meant a diminishing of his
ability when he took the Listed Prix Kistena over six furlongs
here on July 12 and Andre Fabre said he is happy with his
preparation, if wary of the size of the task ahead. AEarthlight=s
juvenile form is among the best around and he comes into this
race in excellent condition,@ he said. AI=m a bit worried if a race
like this might just be coming a bit soon for him, he=s only had
one run this season, which he found very easy.@

TARNAWA IMPRESSES IN GIVE THANKS Brushing aside some talented 3-year-olds for a repeat success
in Saturday=s G3 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Give Thanks S. at Cork,
The Aga Khan=s Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal) served notice that
she will be a force to be reckoned with in any company in 2020.
Settled in mid-division on the rail by Oisin Orr, the 8-1 shot
travelled easily and when switched delivered a strong effort
down the outer to swamp the smooth-going 11-10 favourite
Cayenne Pepper (Ire) (Australia {GB}) at the two pole. Quickly
settling the issue, the homebred who also took the G3 Blue
Wind S. at Naas last May and G2 Blandford S. at The Curragh in
September was impressive in the way she kept that G1 Irish
Oaks runner-up safely at bay to score by 1 3/4 lengths. The third
in that Classic, Passion (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), was 3 3/4 lengths
away in third. AShe cruised into it nicely,@ Orr explained. AI
thought they went a good gallop all the way and she quickened
up and won well.@
Since turning three, Tarnawa has suffered just three reversals
with two of those coming on visits to England. Only 11th in the
G1 Epsom Oaks last June and ninth in the G1 Qipco British
Champions Fillies & Mares S. at Ascot in October, the chestnut
will have to banish those memories if taken across the Irish Sea
this term. Cont. p3

Tarnawa repeats in the Give Thanks S. | racingfotos.com
Cont.
The manner of her defeat of one of the country=s leading
middle-distance 3-year-olds suggests she has improved and Kris
Weld was on hand to say, AThat was very pleasingBwe were
hopeful coming here as it had been the plan to start back today.
I think she=s a very good fillyBnot many win three group races as
3-year-olds and I felt that was slightly overlooked in the lead-up
to the race. We have no real planBwe=ll work from here. She
didn=t show up at Ascot on her last start last year, but hopefully
we can go back there.@
Pedigree Notes Tarnawa, who becomes the first dual winner of this, was also
extending trainer Dermot Weld=s record of seven wins since it
was inaugurated in 2003. She is the first foal out of the dual
listed scorer Tarana (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}), who was also third in
the G3 Curragh Cup and is a daughter of the Listed Galtres S.
winner and G3 Noblesse S. third Tarakala (Ire) (Dr. Fong). This is
also the family of the G3 Princess Royal S. winner Tashtiya (Ire)
(Shergar {GB}), the G3 Prix Messidor scorer Tassmoun
(Kalamoun {GB}) and the G1 Prix Royal-Oak hero and G1 Prix du
Cadran runner-up Tiraaz (Lear Fan), as well as the precocious G1
Phoenix S. heroine Damson (Ire) (Entrepreneur {GB}). Tarana=s
unraced 2-year-old gelding by Fastnet Rock (Aus) is named
Tazaral (Ire).

ELUSIVE FINDS EXTRA AT HAYDOCK
Imad Al Sagar=s Extra Elusive (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) had
hit the board in half of his eight prior black-type starts, including
a third in last term=s G3 Gordon Richards S., and went postward
for Saturday=s G3 BetVictor Rose of Lancaster S. at Haydock
returning off a one-length second to the reopposing Global
Giant (GB) (Shamardal) in last month=s Listed Steventon S. at
Newbury.

Cont.
He broke in fifth and was sent forward to lead after the initial
strides of the extended 10-furlong contest. Nudged along when
threatened passing the quarter-mile marker, the 11-2 chance
refused to buckle under an inspired ride from Hollie Doyle and
was driven out inside the final furlong to win going away by 2
1/4 lengths from Certain Lad (GB) (Clodovil {Ire}). Global Giant
finished another 3/4-of-a-length adrift in third.
AHe has a tendency to pull quite hard and there was no pace in
the race, so [trainer] Roger [Charlton] and the owners instructed
me to go forward and ride him where he=s happy and relaxed,@
explained Doyle. AHe switched off beautifully, I got into a good
rhythm and the further he went the better. He gave me a good
feel, he=s a nice horse who will stay a mile-and-a-half.@ Trainer
Roger Charlton added, AI didn=t see any reason why he couldn=t
turn the form around with Global Giant, he pulled for three
furlongs at Newbury and got beaten a length, and I thought we
had every chance today. He settled very well in front and Hollie
gave him a great ride. There was a moment when I thought he
might not keep going, but he hit a flat spot and picked up and at
the line he was possibly going away. We=ve always thought he
could stay a mile-and-a-half if he relaxed.@ Looking ahead, he
continued, AI don=t know where we=ll go from here as there are
very few group races. There=s nothing obvious, he=s not going to
be running in the [G1] Juddmonte International and he wouldn=t
necessarily be the best horse to travel abroad. It=s not that easy
to travel abroad at the moment anyway, so I=m guessing we=ll
probably stay back and see what comes up.@

Star Of Emaraaty and Kevin Stott | racingfotos.com
STAR OF EMARAATY STRIKES IN SWEET SOLERA Allowed to start at 66-1 for Saturday=s G3 Betway Sweet Solera
S. at Newmarket, the i3,500 bargain buy Star of Emaraaty (Ire)
belied those odds to emerge with the prize and provide her
Coolmore-based first-season sire Pride of Dubai (Aus) with a first
European black-type winner and second overall. Outpaced
briefly at halfway having chased the early pace, the chestnut
who was fourth in the Listed Star S. over this seven-furlong trip
at Sandown on July 21 drifted to the centre of the track as she
began to enter contention under Kevin Stott. Reeling in the 5-2
co-favourite Dubai Fountain (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) in the final half a
furlong, the Ontoawinner syndicate colour-bearer asserted for a
1 1/4-length success, with a neck back to the 80-1 shot Seattle
Rock (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) in third. Another of the
co-favourites, Fly Miss Helen (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}), unfortunately
broke down mid-race to add a sad postscript to the race.
Sent to Royal Ascot 13 days after her debut second in a six-
furlong Haydock novice contest on June 7, Star of Emaraaty was
11th in the five-furlong G2 Queen Mary S. before making all
over an extended seven furlongs at Ayr on July 13. Tried again
following her effort in the Star at Sandown, she was comfortable
with the tempo early but needed time to warm up as her peers
started to roll approaching the downhill section of the track.
Despite her veer away from the pack as she plundered into the
Adip@, she was travelling with momentum coming back the other
side and there was no hint of fluke at the end of a true test at
the distance. AShe was 66-1 and I don=t think she should have
been that price,@ Stott said. AShe got a bit unbalanced going into
the dip, but saw the trip out well once we met the rising ground.
Kevin [Ryan] has always been keen on her and she=s been doing
everything right at home, so fair play to her. She=s quite a big
filly and has still got a bit of improving to do, so she should be a
nice horse for next year.@ Added Ryan, AShe got very unbalanced
at Sandown and there was a risk of it happening again coming to
Newmarket, but I thought she would have a fair chance of
handling it if he got her down the hill and we knew when she hit
the rising ground she would come home well. She is quite a laid-
back filly and she will improve with racing.@
Pedigree Notes Star of Emaraaty, who was offered in the Tattersalls Ascot
Online June Sale but was unsold at ,115,000, is out of La Grande
Elisa (Ad Valorem) who is a half-sister to the recently-deceased
triple Group 1-winning sire Rip Van Winkle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), as
well as the G3 Premio del Piazzale winner La Vie Infinite (Ire) (La
Vie Dei Colori {GB}). Rip Van Winkle=s full-sister A Star Is Born
(Ire) produced another significant Ballydoyle runner in the
listed-winning G1 Middle Park S. runner-up Fleet Review (War
Front). Also connected to the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge
Cup heroine Danish (Ire) (Danehill) and her full-brother Ace (Ire)
who was runner-up in the GI Breeders= Cup Turf, her yearling
filly is by Moohaajim (Ire). Star Of Emaraaty is the first stakes
winners in the Northern Hemisphere for former Coolmore
shuttler Pride Of Dubai, a son of Street Cry (Ire) who was a dual
Group 1 winner at two and is from the family of Invincible Spirit
(Ire) and Kodiac (GB). Pride Of Dubai was the leading first-
season sire in Australia last season and had the listed-winning
Tanker (Aus).

Earthlight Put To The Test cont. from p1
Fabre added of
Earthlight, AHe=s having to
take on older horses as
well, but we=ll see. He had
that interruption to the
start of his season, which
hasn=t been ideal.@
Also from Godolphin is
>TDN Rising Star= Space
Blues (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}),
who is on a roll over seven
furlongs having annexed
the G3 Prix de la Porte
Maillot at ParisLongchamp
on June 25 and the G2
Lennox S. at Goodwood on
July 28. He was only
beaten a length when
third in this 12 months ago and is probably an improved
performer.
ASpace Blues has come out of the Lennox S. in good form. He
ran well in this race last year and, with the way he has
performed so far this year, we are heading back very confident
that he can run a big race,@ Charlie Appleby said.
AEvery time he has stepped up in grade this season, he has
won more impressively, while he has performed well at Group 1
level on both his previous starts at Deauville. He ran very well in
it last year and a repeat performance of that or what he has
done this year is going to make him a live player.@
Golden Horde has stepped up this year, winning the G1
Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot on June 19 before finishing
third in the G1 July Cup at Newmarket on July 11. Trainer Clive
Cox commented, AHe is drawn 10 of 11, but I=m very happy with
the horse. This is a very competitive Group 1, especially with
Earthlight in there, who we have form with from last year. In the
Morny he beat us quite convincingly, although our horse ran
well, and we closed the gap by the end of the year in the Middle
Park. I think an extra half a furlong will be no problem for us. I=m
quite excited and looking forward to it. I think home territory
might be a slight advantage, with the heat we have at the
moment, but that said, apart from the journey it will be the
same for all of us. He won well at Royal Ascot first time out and
ran well in defeat in the July Cup. I=m still full of hope and
admiration for our horse.@
Another Royal Ascot winner in the line-up is Haras d=Etreham
and Cambridge Stud=s Hello Youmzain (Fr) (Kodiac {GB}), who
took the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. on June 20. Only fifth in the July
Cup, he has to bounce back. Jockey Kevin Stott said, AI think he=ll
like the track, as he didn=t
come down the hill
particularly well at
Newmarket and the extra
half a furlong will be right
up his street. I=m really
excited. He=s a very laid-
back horse who takes
everything in his stride.@
Aidan O=Brien=s duo are the
July 12 G1 Prix Jean Prat
runner-up Lope Y
Fernandez (Ire) (Lope de

(Ire) (No Nay Never), who
drops back in trip after his
second in the June 6 G1

on June 20 and fifth in the G1 Sussex S. at Goodwood on July 29.

Ventura Tormenta and The Lir Jet in the Robert Papin | Scoop Dyga
Phoenix Headlines Curragh Card
The Curragh features a fascinating clash of the precocious
juveniles in the G1 Keeneland Phoenix S., with Chantal
Regalado-Gonzalez=s recent purchase Steel Bull (Ire) (Clodovil
{Ire}) stepping up to six furlongs following his success in
Goodwood=s G3 Molecomb S. on July 29. Qatar Racing=s June 19
G2 Norfolk S. winner The Lir Jet (Ire) (Prince of Lir {Ire}) renews
rivalry with Middleham Park Racing=s Ventura Tormenta (Ire)
(Acclamation {GB}), with the latter denying him by the
narrowest of margins in the G2 Prix Robert Papin over this trip
at Chantilly on July 19. AThe Molecomb winner was very
impressive and Group 1s are never easy, but the horse seems in
good form so we=ve got our fingers crossed,@ trainer Michael
Bell said of The Lir Jet. AHe was in front before and just after the
line in Chantilly, a real case of heads up, heads down, but
unfortunately ours was up where it mattered. The horse who
beat him is obviously a good horse in his own right. I don=t think
he=s an out-and-out 2-year-old--you wouldn=t think it looking at
him, as he=s a scopey sort. Hopefully the Commonwealth Cup
might be on his agenda next season.@
Richard Hannon is hoping Ventura Tormenta can uphold the
Robert Papin and said of him, AHe is an Acclamation and he does
exactly what it says on the tin. He is a reliable worker and is as
good an Acclamation as we have had. They are rock hard and
are made for racing and he is no different. In France it looked to
me like he was running for second or third, but he stuck at it
very well. This is another step up and he needs to find more, but
he improved from his last run so hopefully he can do the same
again.@
Also in the line-up is the July 18 G2 Railway S. first and second
Laws of Indices (Ire) (Power {GB}) and Lucky Vega (Ire) (Lope de
Vega {Ire}) and that course-and-distance contest has always
been a stepping stone to this.
The winner=s trainer Ken Condon has a smart collection of
juveniles in 2020 and said, AAll has been fine with him and we=re
looking forward to it. He=ll have to improve and step forward
again, but he=s been good since and he=s well entitled to take his
chance. He took a big step forward from his first to his second
run and then from his second to his third, and has pleased us
since.@ According to jockey bookings, the one to head the trio
bidding to give the current Ballydoyle set-up a 17th renewal is St
Mark=s Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), the half-brother to Magna
Grecia (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) who was second on his sole
start over this track and trip on July 26.
Elsewhere on the Curragh card, the story of the G3 Rathasker
Stud Phoenix Sprint S. is whether the June 28 G2 Greenlands S.
and July 5 G3 Ballycorus S. winner Speak In Colours (GB)
(Excelebration {Ire}) can give nine pounds to last year=s G1
Cheveley Park S. heroine Millisle (Ire) (Starspangledbanner
{Aus}), now that she has served notice that she is back to her
best when winning by four lengths in Naas=s G3 Ballyogan S.
over this six-furlong trip on July 22. At Salisbury, Shadwell=s June
16 Buckingham Palace H. and July 11 Bunbury Cup winner
Motakhayyel (GB) (Heeraat {Ire}) steps into pattern company in
the G3 AJN Steelstock Sovereign S., where he meets some
established performers headed by the July 28 G2 Lennox S.
runner-up Duke of Hazzard (Fr) (Lope de Vega {Ire}).
GOLDEN PAL NUNTHORPE-BOUND Golden Pal (Uncle Mo), runner up behind The Lir Jet (Ire)
(Prince of Lir {Ire}) in the June 19 G2 Nortfolk S. at Royal Ascot,
will make his next start in York=s G1 Coolmore Nunthorpe S. Aug.
21. The juvenile had been scheduled to contest this weekend=s
Tyro S. at Monmouth Park in New Jersey, however, was
withdrawn after the race came off the turf due to heavy rain.
Trainer Wesley Ward has finished second in two prior tries in
five-furlong Nunthorpe with Acapulco (Scat Daddy) and Lady
Aurelia (Scat Daddy).
AHe worked unbelievably well last week,@ said Ward,
explaining the colt=s latest work over Saratoga=s Oklahoma track
Aug. 2. AHe started off 15 lengths behind two of [trainer] Todd
Pletcher=s horses and finished right up on their heels--it was a
little bit too big of a work, to be honest. After that, we decided
we=d run him at home instead in the Tyro S., but they have now
moved the race off the grass, so we scratched.@

Veracious registered one win during a seven-race campaign
last year, saluting in Newmarket=s G1 Falmouth S., and lined up
at short odds for this first start since undergoing wind surgery
coming back off a second in HQ=s Oct. 5 G1 Sun Chariot S. and a
fourth in the Oct. 19 G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. at Ascot. Racing
third along the rail until angling out for a clear passage at
halfway, the 11-10 pick was the last of nine to come off the
bridle when shaken up for control approaching the final eighth
and kept on resolutely under a late drive to secure a third black-
type triumph.
AIt=s great to see her back, she=d wintered well and is a much
stronger filly this year,@ said Cheveley Park Stud=s Chris
Richardson. AShe travelled through the race well and will come
on a ton for the run, I=d imagine. We haven=t really discussed
plans with [trainer] Sir Michael [Stoute] yet. She has an entry in
the [Sept. 12 G1] Matron [S. at Leopardstown] and I=m sure
things will fall into place once we see what the races are later in
the year. The [G1] Sun Chariot [at Newmarket] is another
potential target, so we=ll just see how everything unravels. I=m
thrilled to see her produce such a good comeback run.@
Veracious is one of three pattern-race scorers and the leading
performer for G3 Nell Gwyn S. winner and G1 Coronation S. and
G1 Falmouth S. runner-up Infallible (GB) (Pivotal {GB}). Full to
the hitherto unraced 2-year-old colt Irreproachable (GB), the

progress from halfway, the 6-4 favourite was bustled along
approaching the final furlong and quickened smartly, despite
drifting right under urging, in the closing stages to prevail by
three lengths from fellow Shadwell representative Ajrad (GB)

Formerly with William Haggas, Current Option has thrived in
his new stable with his third start for them bringing a win in the
valuable ASovereign Path@ H. over this trip on Leopardstown=s
Champions Day card in September. Runner-up in another
APremier handicap@ at The Curragh also over this distance on
June 27, the bay ran twice in five days at the Galway festival,
finishing 14th trying an extended mile July 28 before taking the
AAhonoora@ H. reverting to this favoured trip. Bouncing out just
six days later, he tracked the leaders before being launched
approaching the final furlong to see off the game Soul Search.
Trainer Ado McGuinness was recording his first flat listed
success and said, AI said he was a stakes horse, so he has proved
me right. The big worry was he had two quick runs in Galway,
but he is tough. He is a smashing horse and we=re going to have
a lot of fun with him. He is progressing all the time and Gavin
[Ryan] gave him a serious ride and settled him well. There is a
listed race in three weeks= time at Leopardstown and then we=ll
probably find something for him on Champions Weekend and
there=s a Group 3 at Dundalk after that. He is very versatile
ground-wise and could go travelling later in the year, Covid-
permitting.@ From the family of the G1 Moyglare Stud S. winner
Preseli (Ire) (Caerleon) and the GI Kentucky Oaks heroine White
Star Line (Northern Dancer), the dam also has the unraced
2-year-old colt Sanderlin (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}).

PEARLS GALORE (FR) (f, 3, Invincible Spirit {Ire}--Pearl Banks
{GB} {GSW-Ger & SW-Fr, $127,537}, by Pivotal {GB}), who
opened her account at the first time of asking for her new stable
over this trip at Limerick on July 17, having raced for Freddy
Head last term, broke sharply to lead her group racing up the
centre. In front travelling easily passing the two pole, the 10-3
favourite readily drew clear to score by 4 1/2 lengths from
Abeona (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}). AShe is a handy filly and I was a
little concerned about her carrying that weight, but I thought
this was the race for her and I hoped she=d win it,@ trainer Paddy
Twomey said. AI think it is hard on a filly to step from a maiden
straight into a stakes race and I felt she could be competitive in a
handicap. I haven=t thought past today, but the aim would be to
try and win a stakes race with her.@ The winner is a half-sister to
the listed-winning pair Pearly Steph (Fr) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and
Lucky Lycra (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}). The dam, who was a
Group 3 winner in Germany, is a daughter of the G1 Prix

(Efisio {GB}), who is also the second dam of the G3 Prix de
Royaumont scorer Pelligrina (Ire) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) and the

Spirit. This is also the family of the GI Hollywood Turf Cup-

Maria=s Mon), who was an encouraging fifth on debut over
seven furlongs at The Curragh on July 19, was allowed to
saunter around the outer by Oisin Orr racing in fourth. Sent to
the front passing the two-furlong pole, the 11-2 shot was
pushed out to record a comfortable 1 1/2-length success from
April Showers (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Light of My Eyes (Ire) (Frankel
{GB}), the daughter of Divine Proportions (Kingmambo), was the
3-1 joint-favourite and raced close to the pace before fading to
seventh. The winning jockey said, AShe was green at The Curragh
and had come forward for that run. She did it nicely--she put it
to bed pretty quick and she=s a nice filly for next year.@ Kris Weld
added, AShe ran very well from a bad draw on her first start at
The Curragh and has put that experience to good use today and
I thought she won nicely. She has had two quick runs now, so we
will give her some time now. She is a beautifully-bred filly and
we=ll look for a listed race now. She is entered in the [G2]
Debutante S. [at The Curragh on Aug. 22], but that comes too
quick. She got the mile well today, but her dam was fast.@

SLOANE PETERSON (IRE) (f, 2, Kodiac {GB}--Capriole {GB}, by
Noverre), fifth on her racecourse bow over six furlongs at The
Curragh July 26, broke smartly to lead her small group racing
away from the main action. With only the far-side leader
Mooneista (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) to beat in the final 1 1/2
furlongs, the 3-1 favourite got the better of that rival late on to
prevail by a neck. AShe had to do it the hard way on her own,
she is very honest and is probably better off going back up in trip
again,@ trainer Fozzy Stack said. AThe plan was to get her ready
for the [i320,000] Ballyhane S. on Aug. 23, so if we didn=t run
here there weren=t too many options for her over six furlongs.
She has a nice pedigree and it is good for Craig [Bernick], who
gave a nice few quid for her at the sales last year. Ultimately,
the plan is to get black-type and to be part of Craig=s broodmare
band but we might have a shot at the money first.@ The winner

EVEREST ON RADAR AFTERROSEBUD RUNAWAY
by Richard Edmunds
The Everest could be on the spring itinerary for Anders
(Not A Single Doubt) after the fast-improving colt took another
huge step forward at Rosehill on Saturday. The $670,000 Magic
Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase scored his first stakes
win in the Schweppes Rosebud, outclassing a quality line-up by
4.75 lengths. The sparkling victory saw Anders move well up in
the market for next month=s G1 Golden Rose, but trainers
Ciaron Maher and David Eustace could be tempted to set their
sights even higher. The stable=s Sydney-based assistant Annabel
Neasham suggested the colt could even be a candidate for the
$15 million The Everest at Randwick Oct. 17.
AHe=s as fast a horse as Ciaron has got,@ Neasham said. AI think
he=s too brilliant for a Golden Rose. I think he is very, very good,
and we will just see where they go with him now. I think they
will go to the San Domenico S. Aug. 29 and see where he
measures up.
AAquis (owners) have a slot in The Everest, so you never know.
He is very fast. There is always the Coolmore Stud S. as well. I=m
sure they will aim high.@
Anders has always been held in high regard by his connections,
but he took five starts to record his first win. He eventually got
off the mark with a six-length romp at Wyong May 14, and he
followed that up with another win at Rosehill two weeks later.
Another Level But Saturday=s Rosebud runaway was on a whole new level,
and came at the expense of exciting colts such as Group 1
performer Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon).
With Jason Collett in the saddle, Anders showed explosive
speed out of the starting gate and charged straight to the head
of the field.
Then Anders upped the ante in the straight, streaking away for
a commanding and brilliant win. Ole Kirk finished second, with
The Face (Rubick) third.
Saturday=s Rosehill meeting was Neasham=s second-to-last
with the Maher-Eustace stable before she goes out to train her
own team at Warwick Farm. She will be replaced by Jack Bruce.
AI=d love to take him with me,@ she said. AAquis have another
great colt on their hands. They=re going to have some fun with
him.
AHe=s fast, isn=t he? He=s always worked like he=s one of the
best, and now he=s just really developed. We=ve always known
he=s got an awful lot of ability, but he was just doing a few things
wrong earlier in his career.
"In those early stages he was head-to-head with Gerald Ryan=s
horse (The Face), and I think the old Anders would have fired up
a bit. But he was beautifully relaxed today and I loved the way
he stretched to the line.@

Collett was also full of praise for Anders= performance.
AHe was very impressive,@ he said. AHe=s a beautiful animal.
He=s a proper horse.
"It was lovely, he quickened and showed a beautiful turn of
foot. Obviously, being first-up, there is a bit more to come too.
AHe=s a short-trip horse--he=ll get away with 1200 metres, and
he may get farther than that in time.@
