Prayer toSt. Joan of Arc

Most extraordinary soldier, you insistently proclaim

“Let God be served first!” You began by winning many victories and received the plaudits of princes,

but then you were given to the enemy and cruelly put to death.

Instill in us the desire to serve God first and perform our earthly tasks

with that idea ever in our minds.

Amen.

This incentive allows individual taxpayers aged 70½ and older to donate up to $100,000from their Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) directly to charitable nonprofi ts.

PASTOR’S MESSAGE

Every New Year seems to bring its own reasons to be thankful and concerned. This year is no different. It is a time to remember with great joy, that throughout the years we have experienced the power, presence, and life of God through our worship and spirituality, our community life, and our outreach ministries. We are particularly grateful for the gift that our children and youth have been to our parish and for the formation in faith that has helped them to know, love, and serve God with joy in their hearts. Because our parish family is made up of all of our families, we have seen births and baptisms, Penance and Holy Communions, marriages and anniversaries. Together we have had more than a few parties and “fiestas” to rejoice in the gift of life and friendships.

It is true that we have had a lot to be concerned about as well. The sickness, deaths, and grieving that we experience as a parish family seem especially difficult during these days. On the bigger stage of life and in light of terrorism attacks in Paris, we live with a new degree of shock and disbelief. There are serious worries about safety, national security, wars and violence throughout the world. We have learned all too clearly that we are never really “safe” no matter what precautions we may take. Evil and sin on a large scale still exist and surrounds us.

Once again in this New Year we confront the fact that life is a “mixed bag.” We begin the year by celebrating the Feast of Mary the Mother of God. We remember her “yes” of faith and how that openness to God’s will transformed her own life and all of history. Today, we certainly need that type of faith ourselves in order to allow the Lord to use our gifts for the betterment of life. We should ask Our Lord for His Mother’s faith and also for her humility because we can accomplish little of lasting impact without the power and grace of God.

Each year as we begin a New Year, we also celebrate a World Day of Prayer for Peace. This, too, invites us to set aside the ways of anger and revenge in order to create the Kingdom of God within ourselves and in our world. We need to make room for the Prince of Peace to truly dwell within us and to help us transform our relationships with others. Creating space for God is only possible if we throw out what we don’t need in terms of attachments and bad habits and are truly open to the “new from God” in the New Year. Nothing can prepare us better for a different future than worship, prayer, meditation upon God’s Word and active works of mercy. Conversion and peace in our hearts will contribute to conversion and peace among the world family of nations.

A “Happy New Year” in the Christian sense is what we will bring about with God’s grace and our hard work and imagination. Let’s welcome the New Year by creating the holy space, and time and opportunities that we long for, and that will give us true happiness.

A NEW YEAR FOR A STRUGGLING WORLD

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF SOCIAL OUTREACH MINISTRIES

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

Deacon Bill WatzekSJA Director of Social Outreach Ministries

The meaning of the word “Epiphany” means manifestation. The birth of our Jesus and the arrival of the Magi makes this day almost like a second Christmas Day. The Church celebrates this manifestation of our Lord to the whole world; made known to the shepherds of Bethlehem

and then revealed to the Magi who have come from the East to adore Him. So the Lord is here for both the Jews and non-Jews (Gentiles) - i.e. all peoples of the earth. Universal salvation has now come from God.

Some of the key words and basic themes that guide and help better comprehend the meaning of this Gospel are as follows:

THE JOURNEY: No doubt this was a long and arduous journey for the Magi to find this king. It’s like an exodus, a going out far away from their home land. Matthew presents this fact by using words like: came, we have come, sent them, go, set out, went before them, going into, not to go back, returned. This physical journey of the Magi is the journey of faith. They desire to meet and know the Lord. At the same time, it is God’s invitation that calls and invites them and us. It is He who gets us to stand up and sets us in motion, He who offers us signs and always is with us.

THE STAR: They followed the star across those many miles. The star is a very important and central element because it guides the Magi to their destination and lights their nights along the journey, indicating precisely the place of the presence of the Lord, giving great joy to their hearts. Stars appear throughout the Bible as signs of God’s blessing and glory, almost a representation of God, the God who does not abandon his people. Thus the stars speak to us of our journey towards God from the day of our creation and towards eternity.

ADORATION: The act of adoration is as old as humankind itself. In the Old Testament, the act of adoration is an act of deep love, an act that involves the whole person: mind, will, love and bowing and prostrating oneself to the ground. The New Testament goes even deeper. In the Gospels we see the disciples adoring the Lord Jesus after his resurrection (Mt 28:9; Lk 24:52), because they recognize him as God; Jesus’ words to the Samaritan woman also shows this. St. Peter says clearly: “...but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts” (1Pt 3:15). The act of bowing to the ground, of prostrating ourselves before the Lord comes from the heart. If we let ourselves be touched and reach into our hearts, if we allow the Lord to enter our hearts, that sacred space, then He will change us completely, transform the whole of our person and make of us new men and women.

TO THE HEART OF OUR FUTUREJourneying Forward

What excites you the most about our Journey Forward plan? The parishioners, with the guidance of the clergy and staff, enabled us to dream for ourselves as to what the future of St Joan of Arc COULD be. To see this dream unfold every week with the photos in the Bulletin, online updates, and seeing the changes at the construction site is very promising to me.

How do you think our ministries will benefit from the new meeting spaces? Our Religious Education program is very dear to me. There is a need for space to gather all the children and families that our new hall will provide. We are a growing Parish in an area with a huge increase in housing and will need space for our many Ministries to accommodate newcomers. The RCIA program will grow as we invite people to come to St. Joan of Arc. It’s a challenge now to find a space for Parish meetings at night or on weekends. It’ll be great to have additional options when we plan an event.

How do you think our events will be impacted by having a new Mercy Center Hall and a Palm court area that ties in the Arena? I believe that a larger, new hall will be a perfect place for Scripture Study, like the one I attended in Miami that drew 100 women or so each week. Our Women of Grace gatherings have grown and we’ll be so glad to have room for all of us. The council of Catholic Women arranges events for women that attract people from around the Diocese, and I look forward to more of them.

In the future when we have more space, what types of events would you like to see at St. Joan? The Catholic Church has dynamic teachers and speakers who will be very willing to come to St Joan of Arc to address issues that are current and important to us as Catholics. Who wouldn’t want to come to South Florida from the North in the middle of a cold, snowy Winter? What a draw!

As we enjoyed the Christmas Concert at St. Joan this year, I imagined the chance in the future for us to have a Reception in the new hall, spilling out to Palm Court on a nice evening.

What excites you the most about our Journey Forward plan? We have seen the parish grow and reach out to so many people. We attended church in what is now the Mercy Center and saw the new Church being built. Now we feel the new construction will allow many new programs and opportunities.

How do you think our ministries will benefit from the new meeting spaces? The entire parish and school will benefit with the improvements and added arts programs. School lunch will be a pleasure in the Gazebo.

How do you think our events will be impacted by having a new Mercy Center Hall and a Palm court area that ties in the Arena? I think more people will want to attend events since the Hall and Court are new and up to date. We are thrilled that sports can stay on campus.

What do you feel is the most important benefit of being a member of the St. Joan of Arc Church community? The sense of family whether at school or church.

KOINONIA CHRISTMAS GATHERING

SJA FOOD PANTRY CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION AND DISTRIBUTIONThe SJA Care Ministry Food Pantry had a great celebration this year for our annual Christmas food distribution. All of the volunteers were decked out in festive attire as they distributed turkeys, hams and all of the fixings for making a great Christmas dinner. The children were also treated to gifts of toys that were so generously supplied by the parishioners who participated in our SJA Angel Tree toy drive this year. A big thank you to our generous parishioners who are so giving of their time, talent, and treasure. You make our SJA Care Ministry able to help so many people, and bring them joy despite their tough circumstances this Christmas season!

STEP 1 Gather your information about your assets, including retirement funds, bank accounts and real property.

STEP 2 Choose the type of bequest you’d like to make.1. Unrestricted bequest. This is a donation to be used for St. Joan of Arc general funds. This donation would be used where it is most needed.2. Restricted bequest. This donation specifies how the money is to be used. (This could be restricted to go into the endowment, a specific ministry, or the building fund.)A bequest can be made in a number of ways:• A specific dollar amount.• Specific assets, such as securities, real estate, or tangible property.• Retirement account assets, consisting of any benefits remaining in your retirement plan.• A residuary bequest, St. Joan of Arc receives all or a percentage of your estate after all other obligations are met.• An existing will or trust can be easily amended to include a gift to St. Joan of Arc without rewriting the entire document. Your attorney can prepare a simple document, called a codicil, which adds a new bequest while reaffirming the terms of your will. Similarly, an attorney can prepare an amendment to a revocable trust to add St. Joan of Arc.

STEP 3 Meet with your estate planning attorney. If you need to create a will or just update your existing document, you’ll want to get advice from your estate planning attorney.

An attorney can advise you as to the best way to structure your will in order to take care of your loved ones first and then your charitable interests while assuring the best tax benefits.

As a charitable, not-for-profit all bequests to St. Joan of Arc are fully deductible for estate tax purposes.

STEP 4 Contact us.We acknowledge and welcome donors into our Arc Angel Society. Members are invited to special member events and receive special mailings. (We also recognize and respect the wishes of anyone that wishes to remain anonymous.)

SEMANA DEL INMIGRANTE “Forastero y me acogieron”

8. Ser Portadores de la Bendición de Dios!
