Each New Year brings new hopes and aspirations along with new goals and challenges. It is the time to celebrate our accomplishments of 2017 and to look forward for achieving greater heights in 2018. I am also glad and will like to congratulate team of our DIET e-Newsletter for completing one year of successful publication. Newsletter has not only achieved its goal of sharing campus information but has also become a platform to exhibit and appreciate talents and creative ideas. It has also strengthened our connects with alumni and parents. New Year Wishes & 1st Anniversary of DIET e-Newsletter

At the outset I convey my heartfelt warm wishes for the New Year 2018 to all students, faculty, staff and other stockholders of this campus. Each New Year brings new hopes and aspirations along with new goals and challenges. It is the time to celebrate our accomplishments of 2017 and to look forward for achieving greater heights in 2018.

I am also glad and will like to congratulate team of our DIET e-Newsletter for completing one year of successful publication. Newsletter has not only achieved its goal of sharing campus information but has also become a platform to exhibit and appreciate talents and creative ideas. It has also strengthened our connects with alumni and parents. Though operating in a silent way, the efforts behind publishing the newsletter cannot be understated and certainly deserves appreciation.

Visit of Hon. VC, GTU and Launching of Mobile App - GTU MCQ BE First Year

Vice Chancellor of Gujarat Technological University Dr. N. R. Sheth visited the Institute on 16 Dec., 2017 as a chief guest in launching program of Mobile App - GTU MCQ BE First Year. This App has been developed at Apps, Software & Website Development Center (ASWDC) at Department of Computer Engineer with combined efforts of faculties and students. It consists of a well structured data base of 1100+ multiple choice questions covering on all subjects of BE first year at GTU. Its interactive design is useful for students to better prepare for subjects and that too in an interesting way.

The App was launched by Hon. VC during the program. Also the students who designed this App and other popular Apps like GST Calc. and Guide , Typing speed test, 7th pay, Advocate case diary, Expense manager, etc. were felicitated. It is worth noting that ASWDC has till now came up with more than 100 Apps useful in academics and to society. It has become a platform that not only advocates learning by doing but also supports incubation of innovative ideas.

Hon. VC also visited various departments and major facilities at campus. He also interacted with head of the departments and shared his insight. He appreciated facilities and work culture at the Institute and motivated to strive for further excellence. In his words – “I am highly impressed with the development of the college. A good team work. Keep it up ”. He also invited the Institute for a bigger role in upcoming activities and development at GTU.

Educational Events

STTP on Fundamentals & Design of Heat Exchanger

Department of Mechanical Engineering organized one week short term training program on Fundamentals & Design of Heat Exchangers during 18-22 Dec., 2017. The program was organized in association with Indian Society of Technical Education (ISTE) & Gujarat Technological University (GTU). Experts were invited from academia and industries to share their expertise on the topic. This includes Mr. Abdulkadir Amir from GE India, Bangalore, Dr. M. H. Joshipura and Dr. A. M. Lakdawala from Nirma University, Ahmedabad, Dr. B. M. Ramani from SLTIET, Rajkot, etc. Dignitaries like Mr. Kanubhai Virani - Founder & Managing Director, Balaji Wafers & Namkeen, Rajkot and Mr. Uday Pathak & Mr. Malay Parmar – Senior Manager, Rolex Rings Private Limited, Rajkot, were also invited for their valuable sharing on industry –institute interactions. The program was attended by 30 faculties from different Engineering institutes.

Training Program on Industrial Automation at CAT-IA

Five day training program on Industrial Automation was conducted at Center for Advance Training in Industrial Automation (CAT-IA) at Department of Electronics & Communication. The training was organized during 18-22 Dec., 2017 for final year students of Department of Electrical Engineering - Diploma studies. Objective of the training was to develop add-on skills in students which will help them to become market ready. Training covered hands on practical on PLC, HMI, various motor drives, software development tools, etc.

Completion of Solar PV Installer Training Program under PMKVY

Farewell function was organized on 15 Dec., 2017 for participants of Solar PV Installer (Suryamitra) skill development training program that is offered by Department of Electrical Engineering under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY). The training program is designed by Skill Council for Green Jobs (SCJG) and is fully government funded. In nearly two months of program training related to Solar PV power plant installation, testing, maintance, etc. is provided followed by certification exam and placement support activities. DIET has been awarded target of 120 trainees for FY 2017-2018 and is the only institute in Gujarat under this scheme.

Cluster of One-day Workshops at Department of Mechanical Engineering

Department of Mechanical Engineering organized four one-day workshop on different areas namely AutoCAD, 3D printer, Pneumatic systems and Measuring instruments. The workshop was organized on 02 Dec., 2017 for students of other institutions pursuing their Degree Engineering in related domain. Workshops were free to attended and covered under GTU 100 point activities. The primary objective of the workshops was to introduce students to these fields and give them direction to pursue the same further. Workshop included demonstrations as well as hands-on sessions for better understanding. Workshops were conducted by faculties at the department. Around 100+ students from different institutions attended the workshop.

Civil Engineering Carnival

Department of Civil Engineering organized Civil Engineering Carnival during 26-29 Dec., 2017 for the students of all semesters at the Department. The objective of the event was to make students interact with people from field and learn actual field practices and technology advancements. This one week of carnival included expert talks, laboratory activities, field visits and fun based learning. Activates related to Valuation practices, RERA, GDCR, Material testing, Masonry work, Plumbing practices, Concert mix design, Foundation layout, Transportation, Property documentation, Entrepreneurship, etc. were included in the carnival. Some of the invited experts include Mr. Nilesh Suchdev - Architect, Suchdeve Associates, Mr. Rashik Bhadaniya – Project Manager, Phoenix Projects Pvt. Ltd., Mr. Hiral Doriwala – Town planner, RERA, etc. Students participated in the event with great enthusiasm and had great learning experience.

One-day Workshop on Moving with Motors

Department of Electrical Engineering organized state level one-day workshop on 23 Dec., 2017. The objective of the workshop was to demonstrate use of different type of motors in diversified domestic and industrial applications. Real time demonstrations of more than 25 applications were arranged that involved use 1-Φ Induction Motor, 3-Φ Induction Motor, Stepper Motor, Servo Motor, Brushless DC Motor (BLDC) and Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM). Various applications demonstrated include Water Pump, Blower, Fan, Air conditioner, Refrigerator, Portable Drill Machine, Rod Cutter, Concrete Mixer, Lawn cutter, Quad-copter, Robotic Arm, 360° Controlled Camera, 2-Axis CNC Control, Paper Cutting Machine, 3D Printer, E-Bike, BLDC submersible pump, BLDC pump, etc. Around 150+ students from institutes within and outside Rajkot participated in the workshop and enjoyed learning.

Workshops were conducted on different topics that included - 1) Air and Noise Pollution Monitoring as per Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) Guidelines 2) Structural evaluation of unbound layer of pavement using Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) as per IRC: SP-72-2007 3) Construction project management using MS Project 4) Design of Concrete mix as per IS: 10262-2009 5) Surveying using Total Station 6) Classification and identification of soil as per IS: 1498-1970 7) Design of RC frame using STAAD pro V8i The objective of the workshop was to introduce the topics that may help students to further explore as per their interest. Around 70+ students participated in the program.

Prof. K. M. Dhamsaniya and Prof. D. B. Jani, Department of Humanities and Science, attended National Seminar on Advances in Numerical Methods held PDPU, Gandhinagar during 01-03 Dec., 2017. The objective of the seminar was to discuss applications of Numerical Methods in field of Engineering.

Attended Training Program at L & T Switch Gear Training Center

Students of Department of Electrical Engineering BE Sem. 8 viz. Darshan Pandya, Vaghani Kailash, Churasiya Bipin, Mori Tushar & Dhanwani Pratik, were shortlisted for training at L&T Switch Gear Training Centre, Vadodara and attended same between 06-08 Dec., 2017. The training was on Industrial Electrical Systems and covered study of wide range of voltage switchgears like contactors, overload relays, motor starters, circuit breakers, etc.

Attended Faculty Development Program

Prof. U. J. Solanki, Department of Civil Engineering, attended faculty development program on Pavement Preservation and Environmental Impact Assessment of Recycled Materials in Pavement Management at IIT-Madras during 04-09 Dec., 2017. The program was focused on pavement management system that included pavement selection, pavement preservation & maintenance and pavement testing.

Prof. K. K. Vala, Department of Civil Engineering, attended faculty development program on Effective Teaching and Learning of Geotechnical Engineering using Field Practice and Case Studies. The program was organized by NIT, Warangal during 06-10 Dec., 2017. Training program covered topics like Method of Geotechnical Exploration, Earthquake, Case Studies on Ground Improvement Techniques, etc. Emphasis was laid on how to effectively teach these concepts to students. Around 30 participants from all over India attended the training program.

Material Testing Laboratory, part of Darshan Consultancy Cell, at Department of Civil Engineering received NABL (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories) accreditation in 7 major areas of material testing.

Institute was accredited with 4 star by National Skill Development Council (NSDC) for its Training center for Solar PV Installer (Suryamitra) at Department of Electrical Engineering. DIET is one among only three institutions in India that are nominated to run this training program under NSDC.

Urja Mitra Home – a mobile energy conservation demonstration developed by Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA) was assigned to the Institute for energy conservation promotional activities. DIET is the only educational institute in Gujarat to have this honor.

Team DIET were champions in Rajkot Smart city Hackathon-2017 organized by Rajkot Municipal Corporation and won cash prize of `1.25 lac. Students presented a novel technology solution on Alert System for Unauthorized Direct Pumping in Water Distribution.

The institute has been awarded with NCC Unit -Senior division (Naval Wing) with a student battalion of 50 cadets. DIET is among very few engineering institutions in Gujarat having NCC unit.

Around 113+ Mobile Apps & Websites were developed and made live on various platform. From this mobile app on RMTS/BRTS service was launched by Hon. Commissioner, Rajkot Municipal Corporation and mobile app on MCQ preparations for GTU BE Sem. 1 was launched by Hon. VC, Gujarat Technological Universtiy.

In GTU sports festival Spirit-2017 students of the Institute won total 9 medals in various events. This includes 1 Gold, 7 Silver and 1 Bronze.

90%+ placement of 2013-2017 batch students during their final year.
