FROM THE PRESIDENT
CVSA……another nationwide safety event
July 15-21
Operation Safe Driver Week, an annual enforcement spree put
on by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, is set this year
for July 15-21.
During the weeklong blitz, enforcers will be focusing on
traffic violations, seat belt enforcement, driver roadside
inspections and driver regulatory compliance. CVSA says
driver behavior is the cause of more than 88 percent of large
truck crashes and 93 percent of passenger vehicle crashes.
Driving behaviors that will be targeted during the week
include speeding, distracted driving, texting, failure to use a
seat belt, following too closely, improper lane change, failure
to obey traffic control devices and more.
Last year, nearly 39,000 citations and warnings were
issued to truck drivers during Operation Safe Driver Week.
More than 84 percent of these violations were for state and
local moving violations.
ELECTRONIC TRIP REPORT BEGINS JULY 1

TRAINING TIDBITS by Jeremy Nixon, Driver Training Safety.
Coupling and uncoupling of trailers
When coupling a trailer make sure you are checking height and
alignment of the tractor and the trailer. Improper height could result in a
high hook (king pin slides overtop the fifth wheel causing serious
equipment damage) if this occurs there is the procedure to correct:
1. Crank landing gear up as far as possible, lifting the trailer.
2. Get your pry bar and make the fifth wheel flat (level) with
ground.
3. If truck is equipped with air release the air dump to lower the
fifth wheel.
4. Slowly pull forward
5. Lower trailer to proper height.
NOTE: Thermal’s yard truck fifth wheel sits higher than our normal
height, therefore you may encounter this issue at Thermal.

Once hooked don’t forget to do a quick tug test to verify that the
locking jaw is in place.
Upon exiting your truck follow the anagram P.A.L (see below) to
complete the coupling process
P= Pin to verify closed and whole way across in locked position.
A= Airline/electrical line are connected properly
L= Landing gear cranked up fully. Make sure using three points of
contact when doing so.
Followed by Pre-trip.
When uncoupling your truck take a L.A.P around your truck while doing
your post trip. Then move to the L.A.P process.
L=Landing gear down to the proper height
A=Air/ electrical lines disconnected and secured
P= Pin released buy pulling handle and moving locking jaw.
Pull slowly out from trailer to be sure Landing is safely stabilizing the
trailer. This will also help prevent popping of an air bag from a heavy
trailer.
Safe and easy steps to help you prevent the chance of dropping a trailer
and damaging equipment.
Safety first and always.

6 wire ties were put into each survival kit for the trucks.
We need to put in the newsletter how to lock the video using the remote button in case of
an accident or any incident that needs recorded.
Another SD card format instruction sheet needs put out to each driver to remind them to do
this on a weekly basis and put into the newsletter.
Million mile stickers have been received and need put on the eligible trucks when time

are doing!
These great future drivers then leave the industry because they chose the
