The Queen’s Award For Enterprise: Innovation 2016

I am delighted to announce that Sherwin-Williams Protective and Marine Coatings (EMEA) has achieved the UK’s most prestigious business award; The Queen’s Award For Enterprise: Innovation 2016, for Dura-Plate™ 301W.

Welcome Further information

Dura-Plate™ 301W is a unique coating which needs minimal surface preparation, has excellent adhesion properties even on damp surfaces and can cure at 0°C. This product has extended the life of the painting season for the asset owner and maintenance contractor worldwide and in Europe particularly.

Ian Walker, Managing Director – EMEA

[email protected]

I am immensely proud of my team in the EMEA region who worked incredibly hard to develop this unique product which is unrivalled in the market place. The Queen’s Award For Enterprise: Innovation 2016 is extremely hard to achieve with less than a quarter of those who enter receiving the accolade. An entry must show not only outstanding innovation but also commercial success for a period of not less than two years. It truly is an exceptional achievement that we have been given this award.

We will have the honour on the 14th July 2016 of meeting Her Majesty The Queen at Buckingham Palace to officially receive the award. The award will then return to the EMEA head office where we will celebrate this achievement with both the team and our customers.

Project

Centrica Energy is an international business which generates power for millions of homes.

Centrica’s fi elds, located in and around Morecambe Bay are some of the largest on the UK continental shelf. The company

has both onshore and offshore facilities at this location.

The Morecambe Hub is located in a C5 corrosive environment (marine, offshore, estuaries, coastal areas with high salinity*)

in which signifi cant maintenance is required. The protective coatings which had been used did have a number of limitations.

The manufacturer’s technical instruction stated that the coatings could not be applied outside the required substrate

condition, relative humidity and dew point parameters listed. This resulted in a signifi cant amount of environmental

downtime (non productive painting time) being recorded in Centrica’s 2014 maintenance campaign.

An alternative, effective and innovative external coating which either eradicated or reduced environmental downtime

was needed.

Sherwin-Williams’ Dura-Plate™ 301W, a surface and humidity tolerant epoxy system which provides outstanding durability

and long-term performance was identifi ed as ideal.

The Queen’s Award For Enterprise: Innovation 2016

Dura-Plate™ 301WSurface and humidity tolerant epoxy

Dura-Plate™ 301W is a revolutionary and unique epoxy industrial coating which offers a combination of surface tolerance, high adhesion, humidity tolerance and cold curing features.

Its unique formulation and application performance allows the user to utilise ultra high pressure (UHP) water to clean off the substrate as the coating adheres to a damp surface. Therefore grit blasting (which can have a major environmental impact) does not have to be used e.g.

- waste paint often containing lead cannot be easily separated from the waste grit. - waste grit volume is high and needs safe environmental disposal.

Utilisation of UHP water jetting typically generates <1kg/m2 contaminated residues compared to 60kg/m2 for abrasive grit blasting.

Less waste

Its unique formulation is based on next generation phenalkamine technology which gives superior application performance and allows the user to paint over partially rusted surfaces, in damp conditions and at cold temperatures. This removes the need for extensive surface preparation of the substrate and reduces the impact of weather conditions on the painting season.

It is used to prevent corrosion on a wide variety of steel structures across the marine, energy and infrastructure (road/rail bridges) sectors.

The Queen’s Award For Enterprise: Innovation 2016

The harsh winter climates in northern Europe mean that the painting season is often shortened during the winter months and as temperatures plunge for long periods, the ability to re-coat and ensure important structural maintenance is carried out is often reduced.

Dura-Plate™ 301W has extended the life of the painting season for the asset owner and maintenance contractor worldwide and in Europe particularly.

A business need

It has been estimated that painting downtime can be reduced by 70%. Dura-Plate™ 301W brings customers the benefits of increased efficiencies and reduced overall project costs, key drivers in the energy/rail industry.

The Queen’s Award For Enterprise: Innovation 2016

Dura-Plate™ 301W has numerous application benefits which made it ideal for the Morecambe Hub project.

Dura-Plate™ 301W has excellent application tolerance with no dew point restrictions, no relative humidity restrictions, is solvent free, can be applied over damp surfaces and medium flash rust (WJ2M – SSPC VIS4) therefore extending the coating season. It also has excellent edge retention for long-term performance, excellent adhesion and is surface tolerant. The coating is non-flammable and has no solvent odour.

Cost

Approvals

• Non-flammable.

• No solvent odour.

Safety

1. Allows surface preparation to be more environmentally friendly; its ability to adhere to damp surfaces allows the use of UHP water jetting instead of grit blasting. - UHP water jetting has <1kg/m2 contaminated residues compared to 60kg/m2 for abrasive grit blasting.

2. Extends the painting season in cold climate regions i.e. Europe; asset owner Centrica estimated ~ 70% of non-productive painting time could be recovered using the product.

3. Returns customer’ assets to service quickly due to its surface, humidity and low temperature tolerant properties. This allows winter/ night painting which reduces disruption caused by an asset being out of service during maintenance.

Benefit to customers

- 15 years durability over power tooled steel or aged coatings. - 25 years durability over blast cleaned steel, including wet abrasive blasting with M flash rust.
