Ledcor Technical Services (LTS) experienced a surge of growth in 1993, when we were the first to design a plow system that buried fibre optic cable along CP Rail’s right-of-way. Some twenty variations later, our plow could clear the track for traffic in less than ten minutes, and get back on just as fast. This new and considerably inexpensive technique earned us our first cross-Canada contract, building a 3,000-kilometre line from Edmonton to Toronto. We have been doing business the same way ever since – with innovation, quality and safety.

Over the past three decades we have continued to make investments in our telecommunications business that increase efficiency, add value and bring cost savings to our clients. Whether that is converting our vehicle fleet to natural gas, outfitting all our technicians with tablets or creating entirely new services to meet a specific client’s needs. LTS’ entrepreneurial spirit ensures each client receives custom solutions.

Today, LTS is one of our fastest growing business divisions. Last year we relocated LTS’ U.S. head office to Austin, Texas, to better serve our geographically diverse client base that takes us to all corners of North America.

Inside this issue of The Globe we offer you a snapshot of LTS’ growing telecommunications business.

Sincerely,

Dave Lede Chairman & CEO

THE GLOBE FALL 20172

From the Arctic tundra of Inuvik, Northwest Territories, to the country music capital of Nashville, Tennessee, our rapidly growing telecommunications division is currently building infrastructure and servicing networks in communities all over North America.

Travelling to new territories has been the nature of our telecom work for decades. Ever since we built the first long-haul fiber optic networks in the nineties, which took us across Canada, the USA, and Western Europe – this division of our business continues to take us to more locations than any other.

The renaissance of fiber optic networks, driven by the desire for more bandwidth and higher quality connectivity, is what’s spurring growth for our telecommunications business at the moment. Service providers are continuously innovating to meet consumers’ insatiable demand for data. High-speed internet is now seen as necessary public infrastructure. We are currently working with The Commonwealth of Kentucky to bring high speed internet state-wide. In the private sector, we are seeing many

internet-based companies proactively upgrading the bandwidth of their networks.

But our work doesn’t stop at building networks. We are also in demand to service networks and assist with sales of telecommunications services. We currently have one of the largest independent field engineering workforces in North America with over 1,000 technicians and 50 logistics depots across Canada and the USA. Ledcor’s end-customer sales team is revolutionizing the way that telecommunications services and network infrastructure are sold; operating as a seamless extension to our clients’ business and recognized as a high performance force in the telecom industry. Our sales service is a major value-add to our clients’ business.

Our ability to quickly set-up-shop or rapidly deploy our field force anywhere, anytime, is part of the reason clients seek out Ledcor. Our innovative approach to our work and high-quality results are what keep our clients coming back. Again and again.

COSTCO BROOKLYNCOSTCO WHOLESALE CORPORATION

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK. Ledcor completed renovations to the two-story Costco store, a project taken over by Ledcor from a previous general contractor, to ensure the scheduled completion time was met.

At the time of the takeover the project was four months behind schedule. Ledcor recovered two months of this delay by working two or three shifts per day, seven days a week. We completed all renovation work while the store maintained high levels of customer traffic with zero recordable incidents.

Costco has been a valued client of Ledcor for over 25 years, with hundreds of projects completed across both Canada and the United States.

NISKU, ALBERTA. Our 60-acre pipe fabrication and module assembly facility in Nisku, AB, hit the ground running in 2017, completing a number of large-scale assignments for various projects and clients.

Normally shipping out 25 to 30 modules per month, the facility shipped over 70 modules over the course of six weeks — at times sending out six in a single day.

Designed for maximum efficiency and cost effectiveness, the impressive complex includes 1,860 square metres (20,000 square feet) of indoor warehouses, 3720 square metres (40,000 square feet) of indoor pipe fabrication facilities, 745 square metres (8,000 square feet) of environmentally-friendly sandblasting and painting shops, and 2,325 square metres (25,000 square feet) of tradesman facilities.

THE KRAKEN DREDGESUNCOR ENERGY

FORT MCMURRAY, ALBERTA. “The Kraken” is one of the largest dredges ever assembled in North America. 18 metres (60 feet) wide and 40 metres (130 feet) long, with a dredge ladder that weighs over 170,000 kilograms (375,000 pounds), the Kraken is the first of its kind to work in Alberta’s oil sands region.

The installation included 17 pontoons, electrical houses, a jib crane, pump, gear and motor machinery, and multiple structural access points.

The Kraken’s job is to pump mature fine tailings out of Suncor’s south tailings pond, making it available for their tailings reduction operation. Driven by a 3,500 horsepower motor, the electrical power is sourced directly from base plant operations. The project was executed and completed with zero recordable incidents.

OIL & GAS

DAWSON CREEK, BRITISH COLUMBIA. Located approximately 25 kilometres (16 miles) northwest of Dawson Creek, BC, the Veresen Midstream Sunrise Sweet Gas Plant is the largest gas plant built in Western Canada in the past 30 years.

As one of two contractors on site, Ledcor completed part of the civil and concrete work, as well as structural steel installations, mechanical equipment installations, piping and electrical.

All pipe fabrication and module assembly took place at Ledcor’s Nisku facility. These modules were then transported to the site, which now houses over 130 structural steel modules, some stacked four modules high. Thanks to the efforts of our Nisku team, all the modules were prepared and shipped on schedule.

EMPLOYEES RAISE $1.4 MILLION FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES ACROSS CANADA AND THE U.S. Ledcor’s employee giving campaign raised $1.4 million CAD for more than 100 charities in Canada and the US. The annual campaign was fueled by the slogan “What’s in Your Heart?” and was dedicated to helping children in need face difficult social and medical challenges.

All Ledcor offices across North America joined together to raise funds through employee contribution and fundraising activities, which were corporately matched dollar for dollar. The money was donated to a range of charities, from children’s hospitals and hospices to food banks, front-line community organizations, and family support services.

Some areas of donation include: medical equipment, creating opportunities for children with disabilities, providing families access to food, and supporting children living with juvenile diabetes, Crohn’s disease, cystic fibrosis, and autism.

KOROL CUP CREATES OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTSKELOWNA, BRITISH COLUMBIA. Hockey players from across Ledcor’s offices made their way to Kelowna for a weekend of team building at the 12th annual Korol Cup Hockey Challenge.

The Korol cup is a fundraising initiative inspired by Trevor Korol, a young enterprising member of the Ledcor family who passed away from a tragic plane crash in 2008. In collaboration with Trevor’s father, a fund was established to provide scholarships at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) for deserving technology students. Two additional endowment funds were established at South Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) and British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT).

Over 100 Ledcor employees from 11 different cities represented five teams, while a number of Ledcor’s partners also participated.

To date, the initiative has raised over $300,000 CAD, with 56 scholarships awarded.
