Summer brings a multitude of fun outdoor activities for children and adults, although the heat can be tough to manage. Therefore, it is important to know the side effects of heat exhaustion because they often go unnoticed until it’s too late. You should also keep an eye on the humidity. Exercising in warm weather increases your core body temperature, and in response, your body produced sweat to cool you down. However, in humid weather, cooling down is more difficult because perspiration does not evaporate as quickly from your skin. This raises your heart rate as your body continues to try to keep you cool. To stay hydrated in hot temperatures, make sure you are consuming enough fluids, particularly water, throughout the day. Another way to maintain hydration is to add water-rich foods, such as green leaf lettuce, watermelon, grapefruit, oranges, and tomatoes, to your diet.
It is important to be able to recognize the signs of heat exhaustion. These signs can include:
Muscle cramps Fatigue Weakness Dizziness Headache Nausea or vomiting Cool, moist skin Your pulse rate might be slow and weak, and if left untreated, can become heat stroke. Summertime is an active season and practicing safe ways to play is critical for well-being. Source: Natalie Jones, family health extension specialist
