Our beloved Chairman, Mr. Jasu Shah, the Founder of Jasubhai Group & CHEMTECH Foundation fondly referred to as Jasubhai, passed away on March 23, 2016 in Mumbai.

At a very young age Mr Shah was full of ideas and wanted to set off on a journey to realise his own dreams to make a difference. He was highly inspired by the contribution of Germans to the discipline of chemical engineering while pursuing Industrial Engineering in Germany. “Germany was my dream but India was my call. I always wanted to do something on my own in India,” he wrote in the book “The Journey is The Reward” which was released during the silver jubilee of CHEMTECH.*

After his return, Mr Shah observed that the Government of India had accorded priority to the chemical industry and he chose to play the role of a professional

communicator for chemical and chemical engineering sectors and launched Chemical Engineering World (CEW), in 1966 which has established itself as a respectable technical journal for chemical and process engineering sector in India. By 1970 Mr Shah was ready with the idea to launch trade fairs on the lines of the German process industry fair ACHEMA. There was no concept of trade fairs in India at that time and he believed that such a platform could help the industry and the entrepreneurs by facilitating exchange of ideas, technology upgradation and technology transfers. While some of his friends and well-wishers advised him to drop the Quixotic - if not idiotic proposition*, Mr Shah refused to step back and went ahead with the impassioned dream which evolved as the 2nd largest global event in this domain and relentlessly continued to serve the industries for the last 40 years and will continue in the years to come.

Mr Shah was a visionary and he spearheaded the growth of the Jasubhai Group from B2B publications and events company to establishing the group as a widely acknowledged engineering services & contract manufacturing services provider for process equipment,

process automation, material handling, water technology serving the key industries. He built several Industry leading Manufacturing & Engineering companies including a joint venture with Emerson Electric and also headed the Indian arm Fisher-Rosemount (India) Limited. He was responsible for bringing innovative technologies in Combustion Engineering and Material Handling for the chemical plant & allied products in India.

Under his aegis, our media house ventured into the info tech media with the launch of Jasubhai Digital Media in 1998, a pioneering IT Media company with highly successful brands like Digit, Chip, Skoar and ZDNet.

Mr Jasu Shah served as the Honorary Consul General of Austria in India since 1980. He was recognised for his services and presented with the Grand Award of Honour for Service to the Austrian Republic and Austrian Cross of Honour for contribution in Science & Arts.

He will always be remembered in the annals of chemical industry worldwide as the person who envisioned Make in India more than 40 years back.

AchemAsia sets a mark: 300 exhibitors from 17 countries The countdown to the 10th AchemAsia is on: on 9 May, the doors to the most international trade fair for China’s process industry open in Beijing. Over 4 days, close to 300 exhibitors from 17 countries are presenting products and technology for apparatus and plant engineering, pharmaceutical and food processing, the chemical and petrochemical industry, the laboratory sector and packaging technology. Other core aspects include environmental technology and water treatment. The exhibition in the China National Convention Centre will be accompanied by several satellite symposia. Topics include leakage detection and avoidance in the petrochemical sector, "intelligent plant engineering", trends in process technology, single-use technologies and separation technology.

The current economic environment has not left AchemAsia completely untouched; international exhibitors in particular appear to be somewhat hesitant. Dr Thomas Scheuring, CEO of DECHEMA Ausstellungs-GmbH, continues to see good opportunities in the Chinese market: "The slogan of AchemAsia is "Meet the future of China's process industries. Now", – and that’s for a reason: China’s process industry has a bright future. It would be a mistake to overlook China right now. Now is the time to be on the ball, because Chinese partners are keenly aware of who stands by them even in difficult times."
