Several regions of the world are facing severe pressure on transmission line infrastructure, while the trends of the global energy system show a constant need for improving safety and quality of supply and an increasing impact of environmental issues.

When the construction of a new line is possible, the trend isto give priority to EHV and UHV Power Lines, both AC &DC, in order to reduce the losses, both of them with largerand increased number of multiple bundle conductors (6 or8 bundle are pretty common on UHV).

When economic concerns and limitation on obtaining new right of ways for transmission line limit the growth of new lines, thesolution is upgrade or replace the existing transmission line, mainly by reconductoring with use of new generation HTLSconductors, and in some case by using new design of towers.

In order to reduce these losses, the recent trend of countries with the higher rate of energy development is to give priority to extra high and ultra high voltage power lines (660-750-800-1000 kV-1100-1200 kV), many of which programmed to operate in direct current (DC).

Electrical systems powered by renewable sources are experiencing a strong development considerable difficulties in their expansion because of problems arising from delays and lacks of grid interconnection. Stringing Conductors with large Diameter

Large crossing means single spanof 1.5-2 km and above, as per largeriver crossing around the world, upto the fjord crossing, typical ofNorway, in which the single span canbe between 3 to 4 km.

In correspondence of the largecrossing, the bundle configurationof the line is sometimes shifted toa single conductor configuration,due to mechanical limits of theconductors and otherenvironmental reason, bringing theconductor size up to 55 to 60 mm.

For new generation HTLS conductors the requirements from manufacturer for bull-wheels diameter are different depending onthe kind of conductor typology; bull-wheel diameter move from 35 times to 40, 42 and also 45, while for blocks it moves from20 to 26, 28 up to 31 or above.

HTLS conductors are also very delicate on handling, due to the material selection, as soft annealed aluminum for outsidelayers and special alloy or composite core. They require care during stringing, in particular for the high fragility of the coreunder torsional loads.

Bull-wheels material must avoid any over-stress of the conductor under stringing.

When the dimension of a machine will be larger than available traditional transportation resources, the equipments manufactures realized machines made by modular parts (normally operation unit and power unit); they are detachable machines not really for “weight” reason but mainly for “dimension” reasons.

The machines on each operational side are linked in parallel and electronically connected and synchronized; however, they are operated by one operator from one main control.

The modular machine concept is based on the possibility to link a series of stringing machines, both at the puller or tensioner side, allowing the stringing of a large number of ropes or conductors.
