A Note from the Editor
A quick note to apologize for the lateness of this newsletter. As some of you know, on October 20th I was
putting my trailer away and in the process I fell, hard, on the concrete driveway. Landed on my right
hip, right side and right shoulder. Ended up with a very sore hip, shoulder and 3 broken ribs. For the
last few weeks I have been going to work and coming home and falling asleep. So, nothing got done on this
edition. I am doing much better now and would like to thank you for your understanding. This edition is a combination
of November and December information. We will get back on a regular schedule in January. Thank you for your
patience, Sue Thompson
A Few Words from our District Director
It's a little scary that they Midwest has gotten at least 4 measurable snowfalls and this might mean we need to hunker
down for a long winter. Let's hope that does not happen.
On to better thoughts, about riding and chapter fun. How are your chapter calendar's filling in for 2020? Please be sure to
add the Officers Conference, Training Event and Crazy Supper on Sat, March 7. Plans are in the works to continue a
Safety Weekend in May to do Range practice and CPR/First Aid Training. Then there will be the District Rally on Friday &
Saturday, Sept 18-19 in Fairfield-rally flyer with registration is attached to this newsletter.
Please check the listing of holiday parties hosted by your local chapters and take note of a couple chapter's Get Together
location changes so you don't miss out on their fun.
Our personal calendar sure is filling up fast as we work to include chapter events, bordering state rally's plus the GWRRA
International Wing Ding Rally to be on July 1-4 in Springfield, MO. This year that rally is less than a day's ride south of us,
30 minutes north of Branson and an hour north from some of the best riding availabile in northern Arkansas.
We are looking forward to lots of fun, riding with and just spending time with our GWRRA family. We hope you take time
to plan to ride with your chapter and on your own. Then share those experiences on the District or your own chapter plus
personal Facebook pages. We love to explore this country with you.
We'll be dreaming of green grass & sunny skies for Christmas.

FROM YOUR DISTRICT EDUCATOR
With the gift giving season arriving I wanted to throw out a few ideas for
motorcycle related gifts. My guess is that you have some ideas of your own as
well.
Gloves – I always ride wearing gloves. They protect my hands in sunny weather
from getting burnt, in cold weather from getting cold, from bugs, rain, hail, etc.
If I were to fall while on my motorcycle, I am sure my instinct will be to put my
hand out to lessen the impact. I also like how leather gloves improve my grip on
the handlebars so that I don’t have to grip as hard, thereby reducing hand
fatigue. However, no one pair of gloves seems to work for all weather situations. So, a person needs a pair for warm
weather, rainy weather and cold weather, at least. Does someone you know need a new pair of gloves?
Pants – Sure, we probably all wear pants when we ride. However, I know I am guilty of wear regular jeans too often
when riding. They really are not going to last very long if I ended up sliding down the street. We are talking about jeans
not lasting even a second of sliding. So, I have been working on purchasing options. I have had some textile motorcycle
pants, which are still my favorite option. These have some mesh and are light colored so I can stay cool in hot weather.
They can be worn just as regular pants, or overpants so I could wear shorts that I can peel down to when I get off the
bike. I also bought some motorcycle jeans. They cost more than regular jeans but I expect them to last many years. The
ones I bought are a single layer material but have a Kevlar like material built into the denim. Some have a Kevlar liner or
have Kevlar reinforcing added to the denim. There are a lot of options on motorcycle jeans, but I would recommend
getting something that can have armored pads added in the knees and hip areas. I also bought some Bohn pant liners
but have not ridden with them yet. You must be careful when putting them on to not damage them. But they provide a
lot of good padding and can be worn under ordinary pants. Then, there are the leather options. I’ve had leather riding
pants, but they weren’t the most comfortable. I also have worn leather chaps. They will protect your legs but leave an
important area unprotected. Again, there are downsides to anything you wear so I like having options.
How old are your helmets? Is it time to replace them? It is recommended that helmets should be replaced after about 5
years. Maybe the helmet is okay, but do you need to replace a face shield? No one wants to be looking through a face
shield covered with scratches. A new face shield can be a low cost gift.
One more idea for a gift would be to get a first aid kit to carry on a motorcycle, whether it is your first kit of a
replacement for an old kit.
The list of ideas for what to get a motorcyclist is long and I want to keep this article relatively short. These were just a
few ideas to consider.
Happy holidays! May it be also a safe one.

John and Yvette received this email concerning our infamous 2018-2019 Couple
of the Year and their travels
Subject: Congrats to your COY Couple I hope you will do me a favor and share this with your Iowa GWRRA members and family. I am writing to you to let you know that Don & June Detwiler came to the 2019 Mississippi Rally this past weekend and represented your district very well. I myself met them for the first time at our rally and started picking on her about her driving skills on her scooter after she ran over me while backing up. I was not hurt too bad and I will be out of the hospital within a few days, but the doctors tell me it may take me a very long time to get over the trauma shock, maybe even a lifetime. I did happen to meet them later when they came to our lighted bike show and she kept saying she wanted to enter our show with her small motorcycle. I tried to explain to this big mean woman she could not because we did not have a class for her to enter. She got really mean at this point and parked her ride and said she was going to stay there until she was allowed to enter. This is when I got scared and decided to talk to my judges and so we let her enter. I looked at Don and knew trying to talk to him about her was not going to help because he was too scared to tell her to calm down. Well I even tried to talk to her but she looked very determined and I didn't want to get hurt, remember she already ran over me once and never said she was sorry but that I should watch where I was going. Then to make things worse as the judges started looking at the lights on her scooter I told them that I wanted them to treat her special and look at everything on her ride and they did. They even turned it upside down and she started being her quiet self and calling me some mean and nasty names. I then asked her to turn her lights off and she had to get Don to do it as she didn't know how. That is when I asked her to show me her registration papers as I thought she may have stolen the scooter and I was going to have to call the police. Do you think she got mad? Well, just a little. I then calmed her down when I started announcing the winners, but when I finished, I started hearing her sweet young voice calling me by some names I don't care to repeat and then when turned around I heard she was complaining I had forgot something. I went over to her with my judges as bodyguards to protect me and told her very nicely to "BE QUIET" and let me finish my job. I was waiting for the last trophy to arrive and I then was forced to say that even though she could not drive her ride, did not know how to operate her lights, could not prove it was hers, I had to announced for fear of my life the she had won first place in our special class called "OTHER". I then gave her the trophy and started to run as fast as I could because she had started to chase after me trying to run over me again. Now she may try to tell you that it didn't happen this way but this the way I remember it. We really enjoyed having Don and June at our rally and hope they will come again next year and bring some friends with you. Maybe I will be recovered by then. I also remember June's famous words when she said I was her newest BEST FRIEND. Make sure she shows everyone her trophy. We really do love you, Don and June and good luck with your journey as COY.
