[~ 1880 census: Canton ~]Charles m/3 Panton (he “of Canton”) at age 75, 10 Oct 1899 Emily JACKSON, b Ferrisburgh VT c 1831; r Canton NY.

Charles was a Civil War veteran, a Private in the NY 60th infantry. He was a carpenter, and a builder, a drinker and a“character“. He was building a barn in the area, and story has it that he returned frommid-day dinner with beer, a little “in his cups”.He walked out on a beam high up under the rafters, to where his helper, a slight man, was working, picked him up, set him aroundbehind him, and continued on his way to the other side of the barn. The helper was shaken, but lived to tell this tale.

On another occasion Charlie was returning from shopping in Canton, riding on a hand car with the Irish railroad workers. It wascustomary for a man who was buying supplies for his family to say “I’ll take the change in whiskey”. So Charlie had his jug with hisgroceries when he hitched a ride on the hand car. One of the men said “What have ye in yer jug, Mr. Barber?”. “Vinegar“. Anotherpause. “I have a terrible pain in the stomach and vinegar is the only thing that’ll cure it”. So saying, the man grabbed the jug andhelped himself to a generous number of swigs.
