Laws of the Nine Days

In addition to the restrictions of the three weeks, between Rosh

Chodesh Av and Tisha B'Av, we further curtail enjoyment. The cus-

tom is to refrain from eating meat and poultry or drinking wine and

grape juice during the nine days. Laundering is prohibited even if one

intends to use the clothing or linens after Tisha B'Av.

It is forbidden to wear freshly laundered clothing during the Nine Days.

For Shabbat, one may wear freshly laundered clothing. The custom is

not to bathe for pleasure even in cold water. One may wash with soap

and shampoo in lukewarm water for cleanliness but not for pleasure.

On Erev Shabbat, hot water may be used. Recreational swimming is

prohibited.

On the day before Tisha B'Av, the custom is to eat a final meal after

Mincha and before sunset, consisting of bread, cold hard-boiled eggs

and water. The meal is eaten while seated on the ground alone. A

portion of the bread should be dipped in ashes and eaten.

Laws of Tisha B'Av (August 1)

On Tisha B'Av, all eating and drinking is forbidden. This includes

rinsing the mouth and brushing teeth.

All washing for pleasure is prohibited even in cold water including the

hands, face and feet. Perfume should not be worn. Marital relations are

forbidden on Tisha B'av.

Shoes made of leather should not be worn. It is prohibited to study To-

rah topics other than those relevant to Tisha B'Av or mourning. Sitting

on a normal chair is forbidden until midday. One may sit on a low

bench or chair, or on a cushion on the floor.

Laws for the Day after Tisha B'Av

The limitations of the "Three Weeks" and the "Nine Days" continue

until midday of the 10th of Av (1:01 pm on Wednesday).

Dirshu: Everyday Halacha Every Day

Join us at our 9PM class Sunday to Thursday. Men and women are wel-come to join any time. If you cannot make it in-person email [email protected] to receive the MP3 of the class. Please put Dirshu in the subject line. To sign up for daily summaries http://bit.ly/dirshuRJC. FAQ: What is Dirshu? Literally it means to seek. Dirshu is an organiza-tion that encourages learning of the Chafetz Chayim’s halachic work Mishna Breruah. One page a day Sunday to Thursday and review on Friday and Shabbat. The word has come to mean the actual study not just the organization, as “come” to listen/or download the Dirshu shiur.

Or you may hear people ask: are you doing Dirshu? Any questions: Rabbi Genack and Rabbi Hoberman look forward to talking to you. The next test is Sunday night, August 13th.

Our Sages (Chazal) teach us that one who studies law (Halachos) daily is assured a portion in the world to come (Olam Haba). Talmud Niddah 73A
