AccuGuard Enterprise for RDX

AccuGuard Enterprise for RDX is an easy to use backup software for small and medium businesses

with multiple servers, clients or remote workplaces. AccuGuard Enterprise is single instance software

which only resides on one server. There are no agents to be installed on any additional servers or

workstations. So, AccuGuard Enterprise fits perfect into a backup cloud strategy as new clients can be

integrated immediately

Source based deduplication

AccuGuard performs a source based deduplication. With this, AccuGuard deduplicates and

compresses the backup set directly at the client side to reduce backup time, backup amount and

network traffic. This is done by a small piece of software which is automatically sent to the client

from the AccuGuard server. With deduplication, reduction ratios up to 20:1 could be achieved.

Initial Backup and backup cloud seeding

An initial backup does not totally benefit from deduplication and compression. The initial backup is a

full backup and the deduplication ratio might be slight, due to a lot of different files to backup for the

first time. So, done for a remote computer, this could utilize a lot of network resources and might

take a lot of time.

A better idea is to perform the first backup directly at the remote location with an USB attached RDX

QuikStor. The remote user has nothing to do except connecting the RDX drive, inserting a RDX media

and share the drive. All backup operations are done at the data center within the AccuGuard

Enterprise user-interface. After backup is finished, the remote user ships the RDX media to the data

center. There, the backup is imported to the server object store, where future backups of this remote

client are stored. As deduplication and compression is still done at the remote site, further backups

will be dramatically reduced in size.

How to setup

The following instructions demonstrate how to setup all steps for initial backup and data seeding.

Preparing the remote system

Connect the RDX drive to the

remote computer. It will be

shown up as an additional

drive letter. (Here, an

appropriate label was issued)

We need to share the RDX

drive within the network to

perform a backup remotely.

Therefore right click on the

RDX drive and select

properties. Then choose

“Advanced Sharing”.

Choose a share name and

click on “Permissions”.

Allow “Full Control” for the

administrator. (You should

create a backup administrator

account on the server and all

clients.)

Now, the RDX drive is shared.

(Indicated by the small icon

on the left lower side)

Preparing AccuGuard Enterprise for the remote backup job

First we have to add the

remote computer. Be sure,

that the computer resides

inside the same domain or

workgroup. Select “Remote

Computers” and click on “Add

Computer…”.

Select a method to add the

new computer. Here we

chose “Type the Computer

Name”.

Add the computer by

entering either the computer

name or IP-address.

The remote computer is now

integrated into AccuGuard

Enterprise.

The next step is to introduce

the remote computer’s RDX

to AccuGuard as a store. We

will handle this RDX like a

network drive. Start the “Add

Store Wizzard” and choose

“Network Drive”. Click “Add a

network location”.

Type in the remote

computer’s name and the

share name we have chosen

before to specify the network

location.

Choose a name for this

network location. The share

name is automatically

predefined but can be

overwritten.

Now the RDX of the remote

computer is introduced to

AccuGuard and we can now

create a store. Select the

drive and click “Next”.

Choose a name for this store

and click “OK”.

Click on “Prepare Now”, the

store will be created by

adding a specific directory

structure on the RDX media

of the remote computer. It

will appear in the “All Stores”

overview.

Create a protection plan for the remote computer

Now, as everything is set up, we can create the initial backup for the remote computer targeted to

the local attached RDX QuikStor.

Select the remote computer

and click “Create Protection

Plan” in the right panel.

Select the type of data you

want to protect. Here we

selected “Files and Folders”

and selected the directory

“C:\Test Files\”. Click next to

define the backup target.

Choose the store “RDX Drive

on remote client” we created

above to backup directly to

the RDX connected to the

remote computer.

Enter a plan name and a

description and click next.

Enter a schedule for this plan.

Here we chose “No Schedule”

to run this plan manually.

The plan is now created. As

soon as the remote system is

ready, click “Run” at the right

panel. The backup job starts

at the remote site. During this

time, the remote system

should not shut down.

When the job is finished, the remote user has to be informed, that the RDX media can be ejected

from the drive and can be shipped to the central backup location.

Import the remote media into the central backup location

As a next step, we need to import the backup set to the central backup server. So, the next backups

will perform deduplication tasks based on this initial backup. The deduplication is done at the remote

computer. So only blocks which have been changed or which have been added since the last backup

are sent over the network. In addition, also compression is performed on the remote site. This

reduces the amount of data once more.

The central backup server,

where AccuGuard Enterprise

for RDX resides, should have

connected a RDX QuikStor

drive or a RDX QuikStation. As

soon as the remote media

arrives, insert it into a RDX

drive. It will show up in the

devices and drives area with

the label we gave on the

remote site.

The store is still visible in

AccuGuard. Now we plan to

use a local disk for all further

backups of the remote

computer. We need to copy

the backup set from RDX to

local disk. Therefore, select

this store and click on “Create

Store Task” at the right panel.

Choose “Create Store Copy

Task”.

Choose the RDX store as a

source and the local disk

store (here Local ObjectStore)

as the destination. Click

“Next”.

If the stores do not appear in

the right field, you can

change from destination to

source and vice versa by

selecting the store and

clicking the arrows.

Select the backup set to copy.

Click “Next”. Choose “Only

copy the most recent

recovery point”, as we just

did one backup to the RDX

media. Click “Next”.

Specify a name for the copy

job. Click “Next”. Select “No

Schedule” at the “Edit

Schedule” screen and click

“Next”. Click “Finish” to

create the store copy task.

The store copy task is now

displayed in the middle panel

when the RDX store is

selected in the left panel.

Select the task and click

“Run” on the right panel to

start the task. The “OK”

status indicated the success

of the copy task.

Change the backup plan settings

As all future backups should be targeted to the local disk of the AccuGuard Server, the last step will

be the change of the backup destination of the backup plan we already used for our base line

backup.

Select the remote computer

from the “Remote

Computers” section of the

left panel, select the backup

plan in the middle panel and

click “Plan Settings” on the

right panel.

Select the “Settings” tab and

click “Change”.

Select the appropriate store

for future backups and click

“OK”.

The backup destination has

now changed from “RDX

Drive on remote client” to

“Local ObjectStore”. Click

“OK” to finish the change.

Run the plan to check all

settings.

In our example, there haven’t

been any changes made

between the initial backup at

the remote site and the

import and the second

backup at the local site. So

during this backup run, 0

bytes have been stored.

Finally, the schedule of this backup plan should be changed from “No Schedule” to an appropriate

schedule by selecting “Edit Schedule” from the right panel.
