St John PassionSATB and soloists (soprano, tenor, and two baritones), with organ or small ensemble

Chilcott’s mighty setting of words from the Gospel of St John is a dramatic yet optimistic re-telling of the Passiontide story. As with Bach’s great Passion settings, the role of the Evangelist is taken by the tenor soloist, who provides a melodious narrative throughout the work, in arioso style; the words of Jesus and Pilate are performed by solo baritones. Within the narrative, the SATB chorus becomes a crowd or a group of soldiers, commenting on the story in short outbursts, although the larger role of the choir is to perform the four meditations and five hymns that support the story. For the meditations—two of which include soprano solos—Chilcott has selected English poems from the 13th to the early 17th centuries. The five well-known hymn texts are set to new, original melodies, which are also intended for performance by an audience or congregation.

Hymns:It is a thing most wonderful • Drop, drop, slow tears • Jesu, grant me this, I pray • There is a green hill far away • When I survey the Wondrous Cross

Meditations:Miserere, my maker • Christ, my Beloved • Away vain world • Jesus, my leman

Five days that changed the worldfor upper-voice choir, SATB choir, piano, and optional timpani

Setting a newly written text by Charles Bennett, this vibrant choral work takes singers on a journey through five historical events: the invention of printing, the abolition of slavery, the first powered flight, the discovery of penicillin, and the first man in space. In each movement, music and words come together to create a strikingly vivid and personal account of each protagonist’s experience, from the printer seeing ‘each letter like a person’ to the astronaut commenting on the beauty of our planet from space. Chilcott’s music is as captivating as ever, with energy in abundance alongside moments of clarity and stillness. This is an ideal concert work for choirs looking to perform with an upper-voice group, or for larger SATB choruses with divisi sopranos and altos.

The optional timpani part is printed separately at the back of the score.

which the solo piano and solo soprano voice weave and blend in a delightful aural tapestry. Since its premiere in 2003 it has been performed over 100 times all around the world.

We know that choral directors find our CDs to be a real help when choosing repertoire. They typically listen to the tracks in their cars or while they work, and tell us that it’s a very efficient and enjoyable way to find new music for their choirs. The Christmas Choral Highlights CD is full of festive treats, and the Choral Highlights CD is a mixture of sacred and secular works for concert and church use.

If there’s a particular piece or composer who interests you or that you would like to recommend to somebody else, then you might prefer to listen to that carol via the OUP website. Find the work by searching using the ISBN or composer/title and, once on the individual product page, click the Audio Excerpt link underneath the cover image. You can look at several pages of music as a PDF sample for each piece so you can follow the score as you listen.

There are 23 titles featured on the CD which include:

Arranged by Robert L. Jefferson

I am on the battlefield for my Lordfor SATB or TTBB unaccompanied and two soloists

This is a stirring arrangement of the gospel classic I am on the battlefield for my Lord for unaccompanied mixed voices, with two idiomatic solos. The popular text uses the imagery of combat to express faithfulness to God, and Jefferson’s characterful arrangement of the familiar melody features swing rhythms, jazz harmonies, and scat-style accompaniments.

Alan Bullard

O Come, Emmanuelfor SATB and organ or piano, or small orchestra, or chamber group

O Come, Emmanuel is based on the seven Great ‘O’ Antiphons, and fragments of the well-known plainsong hymn permeate the work. To these, Bullard has added settings of a number of other Advent texts and hymns, including the beautiful ‘There is a rose-tree’, a rousing setting of ‘Chanticleer Carol’, and new arrangements of ‘Gabriel’s Message’ and ‘Joy to the world!’. The work may be sung throughout by SATB choir, or a range of soloists may take some of the lines. The accompaniment is equally flexible. A number of the movements make highly effective separate pieces and anthems. Written with the composer’s long and practical experience, O Come, Emmanuel is a strikingly original work for Advent and Christmas that will enhance both liturgical celebrations and concert programmes at this time.

Vocal scores and accompaniments for small orchestra and for chamber group are available on hire/rental:fl, ob, cl (A), bsn/bass cl, tpt, hn, and either string quintet (2 vlns, vla, vc, db), or string orchestra, or keyboard (pno/org). The keyboard part here is an alternative to the string parts, and not the same as the accompaniment printed in the vocal score.

The King shall rejoicefor SATB double choir and organ

The King shall rejoice was commissioned by the Dean and Chapter of Westminster to mark the sixtieth anniversary of Her Majesty The Queen’s Coronation. It was broadcast as part of The Service of Celebration. Setting powerful and optimistic words from Psalm 21, Chilcott establishes a celebratory mood from the outset, with dancing 6/8 rhythms and jubilant, ringing chords. The voices soon divide into two choirs, creating a striking antiphonal effect, and the music moves through sections of slower, more sustained writing in 4/4. The second half of the work sets an adapted version of the psalm text, famously used by William Byrd—‘O Lord, make thy servant Elizabeth our Queen rejoice in thy strength’—before coming to a buoyant and triumphant close with the final ‘amen’.

Matthew Owens

St Matthew Passionfor soloists, SATB, and organ

Written for the Choir of Wells Cathedral, at which Matthew Owens is Organist and Master of the Choristers, this setting of the St Matthew Passion is ideally suited to liturgical performance during Holy Week. The principal role of the Evangelist is taken by a baritone soloist, who narrates the story of Christ’s trial and Crucifixion in unaccompanied chant. The other, smaller, solo roles of Judas (tenor), Pilate (tenor), Jesus (bass), and Pilate’s wife (alto) continue in the same vein, with four-part choral interspersions from the crowds, soldiers, and priests providing a contrast in texture. The hymn ‘When I survey the wondrous cross’, set to the Rockingham hymn tune, appears twice throughout the work, and the congregation is encouraged to join in on both occasions. The simple organ part supports the voices for the hymn, and may also optionally double the choir during the narrative.

Originally published in the collection Alan Bullard Anthems, this optimistic setting of Jan Struther’s famous text is perfectly suited to performance at a variety of occasions, including at weddings, funerals, and services throughout the year. Bullard’s original melody is expressive and graceful, paying homage to the message of the words, and the supportive and melodious accompaniment may be performed on piano or organ.

Love one anotherfor SATB and piano or organ

This expressive anthem brings together excerpts from the gospels that tell of God’s commandment to mankind to love one another. Underpinned by a flowing piano or organ accompaniment, the anthem explores this profound topic with sensitive harmonies and effective modulations. Although suitable for performance throughout the church year, this anthem would work particularly well at a wedding or Maundy Thursday service.

Praise the Lord, ye heavens adore himfor SATB and organ or piano

Spirited in tone, this anthem sets a text based on Psalm 148 that celebrates God’s glory. Beginning with an uplifting unison melody, the vocal parts gradually open out into jubilant harmonies, which are supported by the accompaniment (performable on organ or piano). Suitable for performance throughout the year, Praise the Lord, ye heavens adore him will be a welcome addition to repertory of all church choirs.

Evening Service in Gfor SSATB and organ

Written in 1852 in the wake of S.S.Wesley’s groundbreaking Service in E this is an equally ambitious work with an important obbligato organ part. With only one change of tempo, it has an unflagging forward momentum. An ideal work for those occasions when a large-scale, expansive setting is wanted.

Exultate Deofor SSATB and organ

This completes the Church Music Society’s set of four pieces by Samuel Wesley which were much acclaimed by Vincent Novello. The striding bass line of the opening sets the mood for an impressive piece for a special occasion. The organ part supports the voices throughout, and adds a ten-bar ‘coda’.

The Yeomen of the Guard is one of the most popular and enduring Gilbert and Sullivan Savoy operas. The edition presents the opera as it was originally conceived, correcting errors found in older editions (regarding music, dialogue, and stage directions) and including unpublished songs and alternative endings. The vocal score is clear and practical as well as scholarly and authoritative, reflecting the editor’s experience as a conductor. Full scores and clearly printed orchestral parts are available on hire/rental, matching exactly the text found in the vocal score. In a further break with older editions, the vocal score and full score include the complete libretto.
