2012-13 SEASON NOTES: More Dishes than a China Cabinet: After a strong preseason in which he finished third in the league in assists per game, Greivis Vasquez has opened the 2012 regular season in spectacular fashion. Vasquez has recorded double-digit assists in both games so far this season, after doing so just six times during the 2011-12 campaign.

Against UTAH 11/2, the University of Maryland alumnus recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 assists. Counting the preseason, this marked the fourth straight game that Vasquez has recorded double-digit assists.

Vasquez handed out a career-high 13 assists in the season opener vs. San Antonio while adding eight points and six rebounds.

Bench Work: In the two games so far this season the bench has provided a spark for the Hornets, outscoring the opponent benches 65-50. The bench has also grabbed 28 rebounds through two games.

Ryan Anderson had another solid performance 11/2 vs. UTAH, accounting for all five of the Hornets’ three-point field goals. Anderson tied for the team lead with 19 points and also grabbed six rebounds while dishing out three assists.

Jason Smith and Anderson came off the bench to combine for 23 points and 11 rebounds 10/31 vs. SAS. The entire bench contributed 34 points and 13 rebounds in the losing effort.

New and Improved Aminu: Through two games, the Hornets are led in scoring by an unusual suspect. Al-Farouq Aminu leads the Hornets averaging 16 points per game. Aminu also leads the team in steals (4), blocks (3) and defensive rebounds (13), while ranking second on the team in rebounds (15) and third in assists (5). Davis Arrives in Fashion: Rookie Anthony Davis may have exceeded expectations in his NBA regular season debut. The number one pick in the 2012 NBA Draft scored 21 points while adding seven rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot to the stat sheet. In comparison, below shows how other recent number one picks have fared in their first game in the NBA.

Kyrie Irving - CLE (2011): six points, seven assists, three rebounds, one steal 12/26/12 vs. TOR

John Wall - WAS (2010): 14 points, nine assists, three steals, one rebound 10/28/10 at ORL

Wesley played for the Hornets from 1997-2005, and was part of the first starting lineup in New Orleans Hornets history when the team relocated in 2002. The San Antonio native ranks near the top in a number of Hornets franchise categories:

The Hornets began play during the 1988-89 season in Charlotte, North Carolina, one of four expansion franchises granted that season. After fourteen seasons in Charlotte, the Hornets relocated to New Orleans prior to the 2002-2003 season. The franchise had just started unpacking in their new home when Hurricane Katrina forced the Hornets to temporarily relocate to Oklahoma City in 2005 for the next two seasons. The Bees would return to the “Big Easy” for the 2007-08 season and recorded a franchise-best 56 wins en route to the franchise’s first-ever division title.

In the 25 year history of the franchise, the Hornets have compiled a 934-986 (.486) record. The franchise has made 12 playoff appearances and compiled a 35-49 (.417) record in the NBA playoffs.

The Hornets first playoff appearance came in 1993 under head coach Allan Bristow. The Hornets finished 44-38 during the 1992-93 season and advanced to the second round of the playoffs, falling in 5 games to the New York Knicks. That team featured NBA All-Stars Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning as well as the franchise’s all-time leader in assists, Tyrone “Muggsy” Bogues.

Regarded as the best season in franchise history, the Hornets returned to New Orleans for the 2007-08 season and recorded a franchise-best 56 wins, won the first-ever division title for the franchise and came one win shy of reaching the Western Conference Finals.

The Hornets have been awarded two number one picks in the NBA Draft during their tenure in the NBA. The first was Larry Johnson in 1991, who won the NBA Rookie of the Year award for the 1991-92 season, went on to become a two-time NBA All-Star and ranks in the top five in nine different statistical categories in Hornets franchise history. The second was current Hornet Anthony Davis.
