ABSTRACT
Distributional and environmentalsummaries are given in an annotatedchecklist, supplemented by charts,graphs, and tables, for 13 I speciesof marine decapod Crustacea foundbetween the Gulf of Maine and nearthe mouth of Chesapeake Bay. Thegeographical area lies mainly on thecontinental shelf with some extension beyond this to submarine canyons and the upper continentalslope. The area lies within two climate zones which influence the distribution of decapods, cold temperate in the north and mild temperate inthe south. The list is thought to bereasonably complete for benthic butnot for pelagic species. Benthicsamples collected with several typesof gear by vessels of the NationalMarine Fisheries Service (NMFS)during the past 25 years provided therecords that are charted. Data fromsamples on which this report is basedare stored in computer files, andselected specimens are preserved incollections at the NMFS NortheastFisheries Center, Woods Hole,Mass.

During March 1964 through February 1966,8,320 plastic drift cardswere released at selected points froman aircraft to measure surface current drift over two areas: From thecoast to about 48 n.mi. off centralCalifornia between Point Arena andPoint Sur; and from the coast toabout 90 n. mi. off southern Cal ifornia between Point Arguello andPunta Salsipuedes, Baja California,Mexico. The recovery rate was 3.5percent in the central area and 5.7percent in the southern area. An average 79.4 percent of the recoverieswere found within 2 weeks following the date of release. Results lendsupport to studies concluded by ear-Jier investigators. The distribution ofthe direction from which drift cardswere returned increased the evidence for the presence of an eddy offthe coast between San Francisco and

ABSTRACT
The families, genera, and speciesof all larval fishes are tabulated andthe abundance, length frequencies,and distribution of 12 species and 2families are summarized utilizingdata collected on 8 ichthyoplanklOnsurveys of the Gulf of MaineGeorges Bank area. The segregationof coastal and oceanic species northand south of the coastal/slope waterboundary during December is evidenced in a comparison of the distribution of upper 100-m integratedtemperature and Atlantic herring,Myctophidae, and Paralepididaelarvae. All larval barracudinas andlanternfishes occurred in areaswhere the integrated temperaturewas above I I ° and 13°C, respectively. Ninety-one percent of positive larval herring tows were in areaswhere the integrated temperaturewas below 13 °C.

ABSTRACT
Eighteen fam iIies of fish were represented in I 19 plankton samplestaken on monthly cruises from Aprilto November 1972 in southeasternAlaska. Fifteen kinds of larval fishwere identified to species. Abundance of larval fish. fish eggs, andtotal plankton biomass peaked inMay and dec Iined through the summer. Walleye pollock (family Gadidae) were the most abundant larvaein \1ay and June and were more concentrated in large channels than insmall bays. Osmeridae andBathylagidae were the second andthird most abundantly representedfamilies; peak abundance for bothwas in June and July. Other familieswith distinct peaks in abundancewere Agonidae and Ammodytidae inMay; Cottidae, Cyclopteridae.Stichaeidae, and Pleuronectidae inJune; and Scorpaenidae in July.Small numbers of Bathymasteridaewere present from May throughJuly. Myctophidac, Loarcidae, andHcxagrammidae did not show distinct changes in seasonal abundance.Clupcidae. Gasterosteidae, Pholidae. and Ptilichthyidae were too rarein the catches to exhibit seasonalabundance. Calanoid copepods andphytoplankton made up most of theplankton retained by 0.333-mmmesh nets.

ABSTRACT
The menhaden purse seine fisheryin the Gulf of Mexico. primarily forGulf menhaden. Brc\'()urria paIronus, extends from about earlyApril to early October. From 1964 to1973 the catch fluctuated between317.000 and 728.000 t and thenumber of vessels ranged from 65 to

Larger and faster refrigeratedvessels replaced most of the smallernonrefrigerated vessels and modernmethods of fishing were adopted.Population levels were high andthere were no large fluctuations inyear class abundance. Age-I and -2fish supplied from 95 to 99 percentof the catch by weight. Over 97 percent of the fish were between 120and 225 mm fork length. The meanage and size generally were slightlygreater in the center of the fishery(central and eastern Louisiana) thanin the eastern (Mississippi) andwestern areas (western Louisianaand Texas). Mean age decreased asthe season progressed.
