Zinc toxicity is a result of animals ingesting pennies minted

after 1982. The stomach acid erodes the copper layer to the

zinc, causing a life-threatening anemia and sometimes the

inability to form a clot. Because coins are heavy, they tend to

hang around in the stomach rather than proceeding into the

small intestine.

Signs to looks for include vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea,

pigmented urine, and jaundice. For more information, check

out the article below about a case from Dove Lewis

Emergency Animal Hospital with zinc toxicity. If you are at all

concerned your pet ingested a coin, please call our office

By KristyAnn Brock, DVM

Minerva is a 7-month-old female kitten that first presented at a veterinary hospital 6

months ago for a suspected traumatic injury that left her unable to walk or urinate.

She was about 4-5 weeks of age and weighed less than 1 pound. She recently found

her way into rescue with Cat’s Cradle, who has a stellar reputation for helping special

needs kitties. Her foster mom is very dedicated and brings her to Viking Veterinary

Care a couple times a week for rehabilitation exercises with Dr. Brock, who is finishing

her rehabilitation certification.

On Minerva’s initial examination, it was determined that she actually did have some

bladder control and that her nerve connections to her back legs were intact. A

radiograph did not show any physical impediment. When supported in the standing

position, she made every attempt to walk! Minerva WAS diagnosed with a strong spirit

and a sweet disposition!

Class IV laser therapy treatments were started for the first two weeks to improve her

impaired nerve function. At home, it was noted that she began to sit straighter and

even started to use her hind limbs to help climb into her cat tree.

Dr. Brock introduced therapeutic exercises to work on Minerva’s balance and

coordination, including passive range of motion to her hind limbs, balance exercises,

and supported walking. (We had plans for introducing Minerva to water therapy, but

so far she has not-so-politely declined!)

Minerva has shown great improvement. At her last therapy session she stood on the

balance disk for 12 seconds without support and she also began to swish her tail,

something she hasn’t been able to do before! Please send positive thoughts and well

wishes for Minerva as she continues her physical rehabilitation. She is a very special

kitty and she deserves a very special home!

Want to see Minerva in action? Check out the video of her strolling down the hallway

If you are interested in supporting Minerva through her journey, donations can be

made on the Cat’s Cradle website (http://www.catscradlerescue.com) or to her ac-

count at Viking Veterinary Care.
