Lions Club of Green Island, District 202J
P.O. Box 13060, Green Island,
Dunedin 9018
Hi Fellow Lions,
February has been our new normal, meetings and projects resumed.
Thanks to those members and our prospective member who helped with the food van at Spartans and the Child Cancer Foundation collection at Moyles.
Thanks also to our Jubilee Committee and their preparations on our behalf for our 50th Anniversary Dinner in April.
There are also members who quietly and regularly undertake roles and tasks without fanfare.
The Club is more than the sum of its members, all can and should contribute, according to their abilities skills and availability - both in our fellowship together and our service to others. That is why there are different roles in Club administration and in projects of differing types and intensity.
I look forward to welcoming you to our 16th March tea meeting as an opportunity to explore the opportunities for your active involvement in the Club and fun and fellowship in service to our fellow members and community.
Ken Whitcombe -President.
You can really help the Bulletin editor out by sending me any pics, information,
funnies, ideas, etc—in fact anything relevant to the Club helps.
Thanks Guys. Ian R.

The Child Cancer Foundation has always had good support from our Club and I think this
initiative deserves discussion next time we get together.
“I got a new fly rod and reel for my wife ...best trade I ever made.” I have friends who swear they dream in colour...It's just a pigment of their imagination. Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity

From your Editor…………… Kath and I did a quick trip up to Ashburton recently to visit the Ashburton Lions Club Motorhome show. This is a major fundraiser for the Ashburton Lions Club and has been running for 17 years. The weather was glorious and we had an enjoyable day perusing various caravans, campervans and the many trade stalls.. It was so hot the ice-cream stalls were doing a roaring trade and we had to support them - it was the best ice cream I have had for a long while. I stopped to chat with the crew working in the Lions food caravan and noted a lot of similarities with our caravan set up. As often happens it was a sticky hot day as the crew was cooking hot food, we all know what hard work that is. We also caught with a few friends from Dunedin who had made the trek up to Ashburton to visit the show. The showground was an excellent venue for the show, with plenty of space for the large number of sites. The vintage machinery club was also open and worth a look, it was also cool and good place to get out of the sun. It was great to watch another club running a successful well organised project and enjoying themselves doing it. As I wandered around the sites I met Tracy Henderson who is 1st VDG for 202E, she was manning a stall advertising the newest lions club in NZ, The ‘NZ Motorhoming Lion’s Club’. I think this is a great idea and may be very successful as the ‘grey nomads’ take to the roads of New Zealand as a replacement for their lost overseas holidays. Check out the information about the newest club in NZ on the next page.

50th Jubilee Celebration. The 50th Jubilee committee is well on with planning the up coming celebrations. If you want to be involved or help in some way please contact Tony Hanning. There is still plenty to do and any offers of help will be greatly appreciated. I note a number of other Lions Clubs have recently celebrated or are about to celebrate reaching 50yrs of service to their communities. We are in good company. There will be a PDF of this Registration form attached to the email sending out the Bulletin, which you will be able to download and print.

Garden Supplies Stall Thanks you guys for the last sawdust bagging, but already it is starting to dwindle as sales have been steady. I am departing soon for an overseas trip (Train trip from Christchurch to Auckland). We will be away for a couple of weeks and I am looking for a couple of volunteers to keep an eye on the Garden Supplies stall. Let me know if you can help as I will be away before the next Tea Meeting. Thanks
One of the most successful inventors of all time was the man who invented the hay-bailing machine. Needless to say, he made a bundle.
From a teachers collection of kids writing………...
If you are surrounded by sea you are an Island .. If you don't have sea all round you, you are incontinent. ( Wayne age 7) A dolphin breaths through an arsehole on the top of its head. (Billy age 8) This is a picture of an octopus. It has eight testicles. (Kelly age 6) Oysters' balls are called pearls. (James age 6) Divers have to be safe when they go under the water. Two divers can't go down alone, so they have to go down on each other. (Becky age 8)
Manure... An interesting fact
Manure: In the 16th and 17th centu-ries, everything had to be transported by ship and it was also before commercial fertilizers were invented, so large shipments of manure were common. It was shipped dry, because in dry form it weighed a lot less than when wet, but once water (at sea) hit it, it not only became heavier, but the process of fermentation began again, of which a by-product is methane gas.
As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can see what could (and did) happen.
Methane began to build up below decks and the first time someone came below at night with a lantern, BOOOOM! Several ships were destroyed in this manner before it was
determined just what was happening.
After that, the bundles of manure were always stamped with the term ‘Ship High In Transit’ on them, which meant for the sailors to stow it high enough off the lower decks so that any water that came into the hold would not touch this volatile cargo and start the production of methane. Thus evolved the term ‘S.H.I.T’, (Ship High In Transport) which has come down through the centuries and is in use to this very day. You probably did not know the true history of this word.
Neither did I.
