Your service experience offers a unique window into the many ways in which public policy decisions influence life in America and therefore better equips you to engage in shaping those policies. Influencing the public policy process requires an understanding of what we mean by “policy,” how it is made, and the ability to identify key decision makers and voices of influence. This workshop is designed to provide a basic overview of the instruments and process of policy making and more importantly, to help identify the best places for citizens to influence it.

Bonner Foundation staff wi# share the unique history of the Bonner movement and how it con-nects with a series of historical social movements such as the civil rights, women's liberation, and equal education movements. Participants wi# have the opportunity to discuss their passions and connect them with those of Bon-ners past and present. In the end, the group wi# reflect on their own co#ective story, integrated into the context of the national student movement for service and activism. The session wi# end with participants discussing their program priorities in terms of Student Leadership, Campus-Wide Culture of Service, Community Impact, and the National Network. There wi# also be discussion on how to best engage students early to make decisions regarding a fu-ture in higher education.
