NIBGE is a centre of excellence in biotechnology in Pakistan. Since its inauguration in 1994, NIBGE is involved in the applications of biotechnology for prosperity in agricultural, health, industry and environment. NIBGE has been contributing to a great extent in developing trained manpower since its inception. It is affiliated with Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Islamabad for the award of MPhil and PhD degrees in Biotechnology. It is an affiliated institute of International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, (ICGEB), Italy. NIBGE has acquired state of the art technologies to cater a wide spectrum of biotech research supplemented with a well equipped IT centre and library, which has been given the status of National Library for Biological Sciences.

Development of transgenic plants for modified crop traits has been adopted by a number of biotech research institutions in Pakistan. Success in transgenic technology is based on gene integration in host chromosome and optimum expression of introduced gene in specific tissues. The determination of transgene integration and expression requires several molecular biology tools to identify transgenics and also to qualify best transgenic events in a transgenic plant development program. The advanced technologies for gene expression analysis include, RT-PCR, Real Time PCR and microarrays. This workshop has been designed to share the experience and train the scientists in this area. The training would provide a great opportunity to bring researchers and students, interested in the development of transgenic plants, on a single platform and have hands on training and also discuss the issues related to their work.
