Discover how our range of flexible NEW Interpretation

& Analysis Services can help you maximise the impact of

your school’s Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT) data, ensuring

you truly get the most out of your investment into the UK’s

most widely used assessment of reasoning ability.

Supporting our CAT users inmaximising the value of theirCAT dataGL Assessment’s Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT) isthe UK’s most widely used test of reasoningabilities. In fact, 50% of secondary schools inEngland use CAT every year and for many, it hasproved a robust and reliable replacement for KS3National Tests.

Fully standardised, CAT helps identify pupils’ strengths, weaknesses

and learning preferences, providing accurate, reliable and objective

assessment data that is essential to the shaping of an individual’s

learning.

As a valued user of our Cognitive Abilities Test

(CAT), you will already be aware of the quality of

assessment data our popular reasoning test

provides. However, are you making the most of

your valuable CAT data?

Feedback from our CAT customers has shown

that, while the quality of their CAT data frequently

exceeds expectations, many schools feel that

they are not exploiting the data to its maximum.

In light of this, GL Assessment has developed a

series of CAT Interpretation & Analysis Services,

designed to provide a flexible support

programme to help you:

• Gain full benefit from the powerful assessment

data contained within CAT

• Fully embed the power of CAT predictions into

teaching and learning

• Identify and meet the learning needs of every pupil

• Address whole school strategic planning and provide an objective

view of your schools progress towards improvement goals.

To enable customers to choose a level of support that best suits

their own specific requirements, four different kinds of support are

available:

• CAT Conference

• CAT Workshop

• CAT Strategic Report

• CAT Consultancy Service.

The following brochure provides an insight into each of the above

services.

“The quality and depth of the

information provided by

GL Assessment’s Interpretation &

Analysis Services are second to

none. Data analysis services such

as these will play an increasingly

essential role in helping schools

to tackle issues such as poor

behaviour and underachievement

as the education landscape

continues to change and evolve.”

Andrew Goulding, Head Teacher,

Bishop’s Stortford High School

The Services explained...CAT ConferencePopular with CAT users for over five years, our CAT Conferences

are set to continue. Suitable for both new and existing users, these

one-day conferences provide professional development through

sharing good practice and offering guidance and practitioner advice

on making the most of the valuable assessment data CAT provides.

Designed to broaden the understanding of the range of abilities

assessed by the test, our CAT Conferences also help to

demonstrate how results can be used by teachers, schools and

local authorities for key school decision-making and target-setting.

Our CAT Conferences are held both in the UK and overseas. For an

up-to-date listing of dates, venues and programmes please visit:

CAT WorkshopDesigned for up to 15 participants and especially suited to school

clusters, federations and academy chains, our CAT Workshop is

designed for participants who are already familiar with the

administration of CAT, but are looking for a deeper insight into the

interpretation and analysis of the data that the assessment

provides. The workshop is carried out at a school’s own premises.

Ideal for use at an INSET day or as a twilight session, the workshop

provides a thorough examination of sample sets of CAT data and

reports, enabling you to provide the same analysis techniques to

your own school’s data. Participants will also benefit from

explanations of statistical terminology and clarification on who

should receive your CAT data, when and for what purpose. We

encourage participants to bring along their own data so references

can be made to it throughout the workshop, helping them to apply

what they have learnt on the generic data to real-time data.

The final agenda for each workshop will vary slightly depending on

the specific requirements of the schools attending. However, during

a typical workshop, particular focus is given to:

• The identification of pupils, or groups of pupils, for interventions

and/or support (Gifted and Talented groups and wider Special

Needs groups)

• The use of individual profile reports and the comparison of

demographic group datasets

• Indicators of future performance at the end of Key Stages 2, 3

and 4, GCSE, A-level and Scottish Standard Grades, and their

use in mentoring, target setting and monitoring

• The examination of non-verbal, verbal and quantitative subtest

results and the implications of low scores and relative differences

• Identification of a pupil’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses,

exploring possible implications for teaching and learning

• Monitoring change over time and intake ability against national

standards

• Making initial comparisons with other standardised data sets

• Setting a baseline for the ‘value added’ by the school.

Why choose the CATWorkshop?

• The workshop builds you and your school’s capacity to fully

understand and interrogate your CAT data

• The benefits of using CAT alongside other standardised

datasets are explored (e.g. FFT)

• It offers additional insights into your school’s data, ensuring

full value from your investment in CAT

• Maximises the benefit of school improvement through

focussing on the implications for learning and teaching

• Provides participants with the knowledge to explore and

analyse their own CAT data, whilst sharing ideas and best

practice with other participants

• Trained and accredited facilitators ensure that participants

receive an up-to-date programme, shaped by feedback from

our extensive CAT user base and the latest CAT thinking.

The Services explained...

CAT Consultancy ServiceAvailable together with the CAT Strategic Report or to schools that

have previously received a CAT Strategic Report, our CAT

Consultancy Service is the ideal choice for schools looking for an

even deeper and more strategic level of analysis than is possible

through the CAT Workshop.

As part of the service, your school is partnered with a skilled and

experienced facilitator who works closely with the School

Leadership Team (SLT) to analyse in detail the priorities, strategies

and processes that address the key questions arising from the

CAT Strategic Report, taking into account other school-specific

information. The consultancy focuses on the strategic implications

for school improvement, examining appropriate strategies and

processes, helping you to identify and prioritise your actions.

In addition to a half-day meeting with the SLT, schools receive a final

enhanced school-specific summary identifying the key questions

and plans for improvement agreed at the visit.

0SERVICES

We also provide a Consultancy

Service for schools that use CAT

alongside our Pupil Attitudes to

Self and School (PASS) survey.

Analysing both data sets together

often answers the many of the

questions raised when there are

discrepancies between attainment

and CAT scores, enabling the

timely introduction of suitable

intervention strategies before

behavioural and attendance issues

arise. For more information visit:
