!GETTING STARTED FOR NEW CLIENTS

Perhaps you are seeking treatment for depression, stress or anxiety. You or your family may be considering counseling or therapy to improve the quality of important relationships. There are many reasons people turn to counseling. If you are reaching out for help from a therapist, know that you are not alone. !

The therapy process begins long before you meet with a therapist. It begins with your exploration of treatment options, and your decision to seek help. Sometimes asking for help can be the most difficult step in the process. Many people often judge themselves for their own struggles: “I should be able to handle this” or “I don’t deserve help.” The simple truth is that if you have come this far, and perhaps someone has recommended seeing someone, that is evidence that you want to talk to someone and that you deserve to be heard and cared for.!

The Phone Consultation

During this time, you will speak with a clinician who will briefly inquire about your presenting concerns or reasons for seeking treatment as well as a brief assessment to determine if our services will best meet your needs and goals for treatment. This is also a time where you may ask any questions you may have about starting therapy, the therapy process, or anything that may help you feel more comfortable about entering your first session. !

At the end of your phone consultation, you will then be scheduled for an initial appointment. In rare circumstances, the clinician that you speak with may believe that there are other providers in the area that might best serve your immediate needs. Should this be the case, you will be provided with referral options to other resources in the area. Our clinicians will always help coordinate care should an outside referral be the best option.!

Before Your First Session

If you are a new client and to save time during your first session, please complete the Client Information Form and Confidentiality agreement. These forms will also be available to you in the waiting area.!

Your First Session

Your first session, typically called the intake session, is a chance for your clinician to get to know you as well as a chance for you to get to know your clinician. Your clinician will review with you the intake forms and confidentiality agreement that you completed prior to this session. Your clinician will also ask you a series of questions about yourself, including your presenting concerns, family history, and relationship history among other things. You will also be asked about your goals for therapy and your clinician will collaborate with you to develop a plan on how to work together.!

While this first session asks for a lot of information about you, this is also your opportunity to begin developing an open and trusting relationship with your therapist. It is encouraged that you ask questions if you have them and actively engage in the therapeutic process. While any question is always welcome, your clinician may also choose not to answer at that time if it is in the best interest of your goals for therapy and the therapeutic relationship.!

MAKING A REFERRAL Who Benefits from Psychotherapy Generally psychotherapy is recommended whenever a person is grappling with a life, relationship or work issue or a specific mental health concern, and these issues are causing the individual a great deal of pain or they are upset for longer than a few days. Psychotherapy can assist individuals struggling with: !‣ Feeling Down, Sad, and Unmotivated ‣ Relationships / Loneliness / Isolation ‣ Worries About the Future ‣ Obsessive Thinking ‣ Grief and Loss ‣ Eating and Body Image Concerns ‣ Experience of Traumatic Events ‣ Difficult Life/Occupational Transitions Recommending Help Approaching someone about their need for mental health help should be handled very sensitively. It is important to come from a place of concern and caring, striking a balance between being direct and sensitive. !As a friend, colleague, or family member, you may have observed changes that have caused you to worry about their health. It is important to be clear about what you have observed and express this to the individual in a calm, nonjudgmental and considerate manner. Voice your concern in a caring and supportive way and express to them that you want to help. If you think the person might be in immediate danger, make sure he/she is not left alone and immediately call 911 or the national suicide prevention hotline, 1-800-273-TALK.!Example: Using “I” Statements "I value our relationship and I am concerned that you seem depressed. You haven't been eating, you've been sleeping a lot, and not socializing like usual. I want to help. I was curious if you thought about wanting to talk to someone.” !

REFERRAL INFORMATION FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

!!Talking About It: Psychotherapy as an Option !Psychotherapy is most successful when an individual enters therapy on their own and has a strong desire to change. As a professional, it is helpful to be direct in offering or recommending therapy as an option. It is most helpful to clear up any myths or misconceptions a person or you may have about psychotherapy. Research1 also shows that combination treatment of medication and talk-therapy have larger treatment effect sizes. For cases of clinical depression and anxiety, therapy can reduce dependency on various anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medication. 1- Journal of affective disorders 1 October 2009 (volume 117 issue Pages S15-S25)

Collaborative Treatment Model !Your referral or recommendation for talk-therapy does not end once they enter into a treatment relationship with us. Our clinicians encourage each patient to sign a release to allow for treatment collaboration. Our clinicians can assist in observing mood and behavior changes as well as responses to medication to help inform medication recommendations. !Consultation Resources !Our clinicians are available for consultation, including how to recommend therapy, determining appropriateness for psychotherapy, as well as providing referrals and recommendations to other community resources. !!!
