New Hope News Our Moto:
“We are not perfect, but we are a church that see people perfectly.”
Q: What is it like being a young Pastor?
A: It’s hard at times because I’m still in the learning stage.
Q: How has becoming a Pastor changed your life?
A: A lot, to the point where I’m busy more and I’m always talking to the Lord about his people.
Q: Has pasturing had an impact on your family life?
A: Yes. It has made me put in perspective my family life so that I won’t neglect them.
Q: How long have you been saved?
A: Since March, 1982.
Q: When did you become
licensed to preach, and by whom?
A: 2006, by Pastor Desmond Lamb, Sr.
Q: What happened leading to the point of you wanting to be-come a Pastor?
A: God began to put in me the desire to shepherd his people after four years of evangelizing.
Q: What is being a first time Pastor like for you?
A: It is a dream come true to be able to do what God put me in this world to do.
Q: What passion is there in you as a Pastor?
A: My passion is to preach and teach His word to the lost and to help strengthen the kingdom through his word.

Conversation Corner / Pastor Bruce Walker Interviewed by Elder Lanell Thomas
Grace and peace to all of you: To my surprise, we are coming
upon six months together. It has been a wonderful ride so far and I’m looking forward to what’s to come.
God has brought us this far by faith and I know God has a plan for New Hope.
My prayer is that we do God’s will as we move towards bigger, better and brighter days.

bacco, one risk factor that can be reduced or eliminated by stopping the use of tobacco products or never starting in the first place.
Sickle cell anemia. The blood disease sickle cell anemia is a condition that primarily affects African-Americans. A stroke can occur if sickle- or abnormally-shaped blood cells create a block-age in a blood vessel.
Overall, African-Americans suffer more strokes than any other group of people. "There are statis-tics showing that [they] have about twice the mortality of stroke than Caucasians,” explains Ralph L. Sacco, MD, neurologist-in-chief at Jackson Memorial Hos-pital in Miami, Fla., and spokes-person for the American Stroke
Association.
The Risk Factors High blood pressure. This is
risk factor number one for stroke, and up to 40 percent of African-Americans have the condition. “High blood pres-sure is more prevalent in Afri-can-Americans and not as well controlled, particularly where access to care is not great," says
Dr. Sacco. Obesity. Nearly 63 percent of
African-American men are over-weight or obese, and that num-ber jumps to just over 77 per-cent for women.
Diabetes. African-Americans are also more likely to have diabe-tes than Caucasians.
Tobacco use. Almost 28 percent of African-Americans use to-
few who actually graduated from the program. My mom couldn’t always give me and David what we wanted but she tried her best and God did the rest. We never went without a meal or shelter.
Many times during the last four years I wanted to throw in the towel. When Pastor Walker came to New Hope, he preached about faith. I learned to always pray and let go. This got me through the end of this year and I graduated with my correct class of 2012.
My life could have taken a horrible turn for the worst but actually David brought some good into my life. I wouldn’t trade David for the world but the Bible says wait for marriage for a reason, so I’m telling any teen or young girl no man or boy is worth giving your body unless he is prepared to put a ring on your finger and raise a family. God loves you more, so just wait.
Being a teen mom has never been easy, nor was it planned, but with the guidance of the Lord and support of my family and a few others, I graduated this year. This wouldn’t have been possible with-out God. From the day my son
David (4) was born, I began to doubt myself and always think it would be impossible to do anything except dropout, get pregnant again or just fall deeper into the category of a statistic. God said not so, He had a better plan. I had David in 8th grade and felt very alone. I had no friends and was talked about everyday. When I got to high school, things became brighter. I entered the F.L. Schlagle Marching Band.
This organization took me across the United States showing me that there was much more in the world than being a Wyandotte County

teen mom. I set a goal not to quit the band even when I was bruised up from carrying a sousaphone on my back for 5 miles at a time. This built my endurance to always keep going. Thank you Mr. May, (Schlagle’s band director), for always pushing me to the next level.
David started going to a daycare called St. Bens (St. Benedicts) where they had a Teen Mom Program. Without this organization, I probably wouldn’t have finished high school. From 9th grade on, I was required to bring in a 2.0 grade average and to come to a meeting once a week to show dedication to the pro-gram. St. Bens supplied transportation to and from school and the daycare to drop our chil-dren off. St. Bens also supplied plentiful Christmas gifts every year saving my mom thousands of dollars. Thank you Ms. Rasheda, the (Teen Mom Program Director), for always caring and making sure we never went without.
While in the program, I saw many girls come and go. I’m proud to say I was one of the

village he could glimpse, rather than the mountains God desired for him. (Gen. 19:20)
Like Abraham, we have access to the highest power available. One woman touched the hem of Jesus’ garment, believing in Christ’s power. Another woman was content to be considered a “dog,” as long as she received even the crumbs of Christ’s bless-ings. Jesus said, “Your faith is something else. What you see is
“It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” Look-ing for a job? Need some political clout? Hoping a friend will hook you up
with a date? The benefit of being well-connected is as old as Biblical times.
Lot tagged along after his Un-cle Abraham, reaping the benefits (wealth) of Abraham’s relation-ship with God. Lot made deci-sions based on what he could see: the green pastures and flowing waters of Sodom. But the city was wicked and doomed for destruc-tion. Abraham went straight to the source of power, pleading for God’s mercy upon his nephew’s home town. Although God sent angels to rescue Lot, he resisted, and even asked to go to the small

what you get.” (Matt. 15:28). These women saw through the lens of faith.
We often look at people to make a way for us. Place your faith in Christ. By connecting to him, he’ll do more than get our foot in the door. He’ll open the door to the storehouse of bless-ings.
He opens doors and no one can shut them. (Revelation 3:7)
How To Keep From Getting Hurt In Church (4) By Dr. Dale A. Robbins
love and accept people for what they are — they’re not any more perfect than you are.
Just as it has been said of beauty, imper-fection is in the eye of the beholder. A per-son with a negative attitude can find fault wherever they wish. In contrast the person with a positive outlook can always find the good and beauty in things. The well ad-justed person in the church should seek out the good and encouraging things as the Bible teaches (Phil. 4:8). Those who dwell on the negative or continually find fault with the church will eventually get hurt.
(4) Don’t expect any church to be perfect — “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice.” (Rom. 7:18-19)
It is remarkable to consider that the Apostle Paul — the great author of scripture — openly confessed that he was not perfect. Like us, he experienced struggles in his flesh to do the right things. If one of the leading authors of scripture and apostles of the early church admitted to this, it should not seem too strange if we find other brothers
and sisters in the church struggling with imperfections too.
Since churches are made up of people like you and me who have imperfections, there will never be such a thing as a perfect church. Unless people understand this, they’ll have an unrealistic view of the church, and will eventually become disillu-sioned and hurt.
One of the jobs of the church ministry is to help perfect the saints — like a spiritual hospital, where people go to get well. In-stead of resenting persons in the church for their flaws, be thankful they’re there trying to grow in Christ to get better. Learn to

our emotions. I came away from the meeting
with confirmation of the faith building messages my Pastor has been trying to instill in us. That is, —regardless of how it looks or how it feels, our faith in Jesus Christ our Lord will pull us through. Just recently, Pastor Walker not only talked about the woman who pressed her way through the crowd to touch the hem of Jesus’ garment, but also the officer who had so much faith that his faith moved God to heal the officer’s sick servant, not any-where in the vicinity, with just a word from the Lord Jesus Christ (Matthew 8:5-13).
Hence, we come from another faith-building message. The Key-note Speaker, First Lady Antoin-ette Starks, who was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer, told that through her treatments she became empowered by the love of her friends, and family and her trust in the delivering power of Christ. This was our first Women’s outing with our First Lady Tiffany, and I appreciate the opportunity to be there.
event. All who came seem to en-joy the event. Hearing how one of the vendors who sells cosmetics for women and diagnosed with Lupus continues to press her way to serve others despite how she feels, was inspirational. She em-phasized the importance of taking care of our health, in order to be able to do God’s work. She said that the Lord revealed to her how inconsistent she was in her Bible study, her commitments and even taking care of herself by eating properly. When she said that, it made me think, again, we really need to treat our bodies as a “Temple of the Holy Spirit,” as the word of God proclaimed. I can identify with what she expressed about being inconsistent in many aspects of daily living.
Dr. Brenda M. Barrett, who wrote, “Set Yourself Free, Over-coming and Rebuilding Your Life,” also spoke. God is so good! Although I did not have the money to buy the book at the time, a long time childhood friend was at the conference, (who I had not seen in a few years), bought the book for me so I could read it
and pass it on. Empowerment is so important
for us women, because in many situations we do not feel we are in the position to make changes in our environment. Many women suffer from a “disease” called “low self-esteem.” Yes, I know it is not a disease, but because we allow Sa-tan to have us believe we are un-worthy or unable to do something, we do not attempt to accomplish some simple tasks. We do have the power to change what affects our health or how we deal with what comes our way. We are empow-ered to influence our lifestyle in a positive way, by allowing the Lord Jesus Christ be the head of our life. Our faith in Christ gives us power. “For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7). Just as the Apostle Paul said in Philippians 4, we should take to heart, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.” What God has given us, we have the power to say NO to Satan and control our behavior. With God’s power, (His Holy Spirit in us) we can control
The Women’s Em-powerment Confer-ence was a very uplifting experi-ence. The Confer-ence was held May 19th at The Wor-ship Center
Church of Kansas City in Lenexa, Kansas led by First Lady Valerie Cobbins. It was nice getting out to worship with other women on a Saturday morning to hear about overcoming our fears and despair to continue to do what Jesus Christ has called us to do: Go and make disciples out of all who will believe, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost (Matthew 28:16-20). God has em-powered us to be overcomers and not settle for a bad diagnosis by doctors and just lie down and die. —Not accomplishing anything that Jesus Christ has called, and commis-sioned us to do. We have the power to love one another and to reach out and help someone else regardless of our circumstances.
Our First Lady Tiffany Walker invited the women of New Hope to come and participate in this annual
