Pathfinder registration is Aug. 17 and 24. Club leader Cesar Tejeda, who has been involved with the group since 2006, shares a bit about the Night Hawks and what this year has in store for them.

How did you get involved with Pathfinders? I got involved because of my kids. I live 45 minutes away, so I decided to join too instead of waiting in the car.

What activities do you have planned this year?We are going caving in September, and next August, we are going to the international camporee in Oshkosh,Wis.

What do you hope the kids get out of the club?I want their relationship with God to get stronger and for them learn everyday skills, including leadership.

Why should parents and kids consider signing up for Pathfinders?Pathfinders learn many skills that are helpful in life.

How can they sign up?Get and fill out an application in the church lobby and come to registration later this month. For more information about the club, people can also pick up a brochure at the Ask-Me Desk or contact Lynne at [email protected].

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Registration for Adventurers starts in September. Learn more about the Little Hawks club and plans for the coming year in this Q&A with leader Yekaterina Unnikumaran.

How did you get involved with Adventurers? I got involved with Adventurers as a result of my three kids, I really wanted them to be a part of something else besides Sabbath School and Kids Church.

What do you enjoy most about being involved?I enjoy the fellowship with other parents as well as watching my kids build wonderful friendships as they learn more about Jesus.

What activities do you have planned this year?We are planning more outdoor/field trip activities that correlate with awards and incorporating more acts of service such as volunteering to greet at church and helping other less fortunate kids in our area. We want to inculcate a spirit of outreach and service, which is such a big part of our church.

What do you hope the kids get out of the club?I am hoping that God continues to take over all our plans and activities and that each child gets to know God in a personal way.

Why should parents consider signing their children up for Adventurers? It is a great way of getting to know other families at New Hope. It is so nice to be able to meet as families and be intentional about learning more of Jesus.

How do they sign up?For the next few Sabbaths, there will be a table set up in the hallway downstairs. Parents can pick up info and register their kids. Families can also contact us via email at [email protected].

Weekly ChallengeWhat’s one great thing you want to do for God right now? Write it down, and pray about it each day. Ask God what He wants that great thing to look like.

The Back Page follows the Bible lessons that children and youth are studying and serves to help kids and adults continue the spiritual discussion at home and establish patterns of a devotional life.

In 1998, Ryan Hreljac was 6 years old. He listened as his first-grade teacher explained that children were sick and even dying because they did not have clean water. She said some kids in Africa have to walk for hours, sometimes just for dirty water. Ryan thought everyone lived like he did. All he had to do was take 10 steps from his classroom to the drinking fountain, which had cool, clean water. All he needed to do was turn the faucet in his shower at home to bathe in clean water. He did not realize that many children in Africa have never seen clear drinking water.

Ryan decided to build the children a well, thinking that this was all it would take to solve the problem. He had $70 saved up. Little did he know that it would take about $2,000 or more to build a well — and thousands and thousands of wells to make a dent in the problem. At age 7, he began to speak to service clubs, school classes and anyone who would listen. In 1999, Ryan’s first well was built in Uganda. Ryan’s Well Foundation launched in 2001. Since then, it has brought clean water and safe sanitation to more than 800,000 people in East Africa (Burkina Faso, Ghana and Togo), West Africa (Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda) and Haiti. The foundation has even established and

trained community water and sanitation committees to manage and maintain new water access, and is training pump mechanics to keep the pumps going.

According to the World Health Organization, nearly 1 billion people (one in every six of us) lack access to safe water, and more than 2.6 billion lack access to adequate sanitation. Every 21 seconds, a child dies from a water-related illness. The world’s water problems are overwhelming, and the solutions seem like a drop in the bucket.

Ryan’s story reminds us that no matter who or how old you are, you can make a difference, one drop at a time. Sometimes all it takes is a little naïveté, determination, vision and a bit of courage to change the world.

What great thing is God asking you to do?
