TERM TWO 2017 What do you consider to be your greatest achievement in life? My greatest achievements lie in the success of others. I take pride in the positive influence I have been able to instill in the lives of some of my past pupils and colleagues What do you think your current staff appreciates about you most? My integrity, for remaining true to what I believe in, and my willingness to allow discussion and negotiation around topics of relevance. I value loyalty and recognise the importance of being part of ‘a bigger picture’. I firmly believe in the growth, development and happiness of the child. What are your thoughts on developing an environment where every pupil and staff member feels welcome, accepted and safe? Most Headmasters will agree with Deborah Harbin: “Creating a welcoming atmosphere is more an attitude than anything else - an attitude that starts right at the top by creating a shared vision and goals to accomplish that vision.” It is essential to listen to the community and to provide a quick response to queries and concerns. Being proactive and ensuring fair play at all times is essential. What are your thoughts on how to achieve a well-balanced education? Although the significance of extracurricular activities such as sport and culture cannot be over-emphasized, academics come first. Achieving sound grades and gaining knowledge is the primary reason for going to school. The next important endeavour is to excel in extracurricular activities. The sports arena provides an opportunity to emphasise areas of learning from within the classroom leadership, accountability, teamwork, following rules, honesty and good sportsmanship. The cultural environment provides for a more complex set of learning skills, diligence, passion, dedication, perseverance, all noble traits that add to the promotion of a wholesome character. My personal motto is “Service before self, God before all”. To follow the path of Christianity I believe that you have to share what God has given to you and serve those around you. This includes your time, talents, compassion and love. How would you go about ensuring that the community will be satisfied with your stance on discipline? Kindness and firmness are essential for Positive Discipline. I strive to discipline fairly but firmly at all times. Discipline is applied to rectify a transgression and not to punish the child. The child must be able to gain experience from the process by learning to become a positive citizen who is able to contribute to society. How do you see the importance of being a role model in your position as our headmaster? Role models provide inspiration and support when needed, and they provide examples of how to live a fulfilling, authentic life. Our children spend so much time at school it is crucial that educators and headmasters are exemplary role models. NEW HEAD FOR HUDSON PARK HIGH SCHOOL Hudson Park High School is thrilled to announce the appointment of Mr Dennis Vorster as their new Headmaster. Mr Vorster is currently the Headmaster at St Patrick’s College, an independent Christian school in Kokstad. I take pride in the positive influence I have been able to instill in the lives of some of my past pupils and colleagues What do you think your current staff appreciates about you most?My integrity, for remaining true to what I believe in, and my willingness to allow discussion and negotiation around topics of relevance. I value loyalty and recognise the importance of being part of ‘a bigger picture’. I firmly believe in the growth, development and happiness of the child.

What are your thoughts on developing an environment where every pupil and staff member feels welcome, accepted and safe? Most Headmasters will agree with Deborah Harbin: “Creating a welcoming atmosphere is more an attitude than anything else - an attitude that starts right at the top by creating a shared vision and goals to accomplish that vision.”

It is essential to listen to the community and to provide a quick response to queries and concerns.

To follow the path of Christianity I believe that you have to share what God has given to you and

serve those around you.

SOUtH AFRICAN NAtIONAL YOUtH WIND ENSEmbLE

Tristan Henderson, a trumpeter in Grade 11 at Hudson Park High School, was recently selected for the South African National Youth Wind Orchestra.

Lulutho Ngcongolo who matriculated from HPHS in 2015 was also selected. After school, he began his studies at UCT and in early 2017 he was awarded a half-scholarship to the Berklee College of

Music in Boston, Massachusetts in the USA to study music composition.

Hundreds of young musicians audition for a coveted place in the South African National Youth Orchestra and a select few are chosen to form the green and gold national team each year.

The National Youth Orchestra’s legacy spans over half a century and is far reaching with the representation of alumni in top professional orchestras in South Africa and across the globe.

The National Youth Orchestra Winter Course will take place from 30 June – 9 July in Port Elizabeth with concerts at the Savoy Theatre and the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

At the end of September last year, Thando competed in the annual National Individual Debating and Public Speaking Competi-tion, where he ranked highly, securing his spot in the South Africa team. Thando then travelled to Australia in April this year to compete in the World Individual Debat-ing and Public Speaking Competition. Thando did exceptionally well and ranked 8th amongst the South African competi-tors. His scores for his prepared speech, debate, reading and impromptu speech ranged from 81 to 90 - these are excep-tional scores. Thando was commended by the South African coach for his maturity, objectivity and his impeccable manners. Hudson Park High is extremely proud of Thando and his Public Speaking success.

Hudson Park High School hosted its annual ‘Mr and Miss Culture’ cultural showcase on Thursday, 18th May 2017. We had a beautiful display of the many cultures representing the cultural diversity at Hudson Park High School with the Afrikaans, Xhosa, Zulu, English, Sotho, Nigerian, Coloured, mixed race and Indian cultures respectively. The atmosphere was very dynamic, vibrant and enthusiastic and we truly felt the atmosphere of cultural diversity present at our school. Our winners of the cultural event were Tomson Akioyame who was crowned Mr Culture and Lilithalethu Ilori who was crowned Miss Culture representing the Nigerian Culture. This event was organised by the 2017 Qhayiya - Our Pride - Multicultural Society. Hudson Park continues to actively work towards achieving a spirit of acceptance and love for one another’s cultures.

mR AND mISS CULtURE

Hudson Park High School has embarked on an exciting cultural exchange initiative with Bhongolethu, a rural school from Kwelera. This involves 75 Bhongolethu learners immersing themselves fully in weekly drama workshops held at HPHS and aimed at developing the acting talent of these pupils, for whom transport is provided by the school. The classes cover

correct stage posture, vocal exercises, improvisation, dramatized poetry and theatre history. As part of this program, these pupils attended our school’s main annual dramatic production “A View from the Golden Arches,” as specially invited guests. Mr Perold, Hudson Park’s highly experienced Drama Director, is most pleased with the talent displayed by the

group of young pupils who have come under his tutelage, and has expressed his delight at being part of this development outreach. The budding dramatists too, are thoroughly enjoying learning new skills, and combined rehearsal for Bhongolethu and Hudson Park learners will soon commence for a play scheduled to be performed in the fourth term.

The Fairy Godmother Cupboard has grown tremendously from when it was originally started in 2013. The Cupboard now boasts dresses, shoes, jewelry as well as a limited stock of suits. Over the years we have dressed girls (and a gent or two) from Hudson Park as well as other schools in our area. Unfortunately not all pupils are as lucky as others, and some need just a little help from the Fairy Godmother to make their night one to remember. We can only do this with the help of donations and this is a “shout out” to all the 2017 Matrics to consider leaving their dresses (or suits) behind. These will be used to dress girls (and guys) for years to come and the joy you leave behind will be a blessings to many.

GIVING bLOODThe SANBS and Hudson were able to collect 67 units of blood. Thank you to the students who donated as well as the teachers who also gave up time to donate. One unit of blood can save up to 3 lives and it is encouraged that parents and friends of the students come and donate when we have our next blood drive.

The Hudson Park Music Department has decided to donate a treasure trove of sheet music to Woodridge College. The terrible fire that consumed Woodridge College in June destroyed the school’s music department which housed the school’s sheet music library. The sheet music was collected over many years and much of it was irreplaceable. A plea was put out over Facebook by a Woodridge parent and Hudson Park came to the rescue.

Both Hudson Park High and Primary Schools have vast collections of sheet music and have banded together to donate as much sheet music as possible to help re-establish Woodridge’s music library. Head of Music at Hudson Park High, Wesley Wong, had this to say, “We were deeply saddened by the events which took place at Woodridge and when we saw the Facebook post the decision to donate was a foregone conclusion. We are very happy that we are in a position to help keep music alive at another fantastic school and hope that this donation goes

a long way to helping them return to full functionality. We hope to establish a musical connection with Woodridge and perhaps do some joint work together in future.”

The music donated covers a variety of solo instrumental, ensemble and band music.
