Ashley MacIsaac, one of the most celebrat-ed Canadian roots musicians of all time, comes to New Hamburg Live! Festival of theArts on Saturday, June 1, 7:30 p.m. The per-formance is at Steinmann Mennonite ChurchHall; for tickets see www.newhamburglive.ca.

Joining MacIsaac on stage for a few songswill be the New Hamburg Live! Mass Choir, and award-winning Canadian step dancersBridget Norris-Jones and Heather Norris.

Having sold in excess of 500,000 albums,Ashley has garnered international acclaim byplaying the fiddle in that hard-nosed, tradi-tional Cape-Breton style, while adding his

own spin, mixing genres and updating Celticmusic to appeal to a broader spectrum of fans.Considered something of a local legend andprodigy by the time of his impressive 1992debut Close To The Floor, Ashley brokethrough to the mainstream with the double-platinum genre-bending Hi, How Are YouToday? in 1995. International radio play forthe single, Sleepy Maggie, and a regular sloton MuchMusic made Ashley an instantCanadian icon.

Ashley has just completed a new collectionof tunes with Barbara MacDonald Magonecalled Beautiful Lake Ainslie, a collection oftraditional tracks performed with Piano andFiddle, recorded in Windsor at Polaris Studiosthis past June.

Much has been said about the antics of theenfant terrible of the Fiddle, but only becausehe has had international success and notori-ety from an early age and grew up under thespotlight as one of the most dynamic fiddlersfrom Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. MacIsaac con-stantly pushed the traditional styles of Celticmusic as he grew up and incorporated rock, pop, and every-thing imaginablein between.

Ashley has per-formed in theopening cere-monies at theVancouver 2010Winter Olympicsto a worldwideaudience and withartists such asPhillip Glass andThe Chieftains.

He has appeared on the Conan O’Brianshow, the Today Show and has been a spot-light at international festivals, theatres andhalls all over the world.

"David’s straightforward songs tell honeststories of real people and real places. Poeticperception and a keen eye for the heart of thematter are trademarks of the man and hismusic. His songs and stories are a direct con-nection for audiences seeking depth andmeaning in the day-to-day," said a reviewfrom the Shelter Valley Folk Festival

ed country to weekend family drives exploringsouthern Ontario. Music played a large partin these family outings. They sang traditionalScottish tunes as they drove through theCanadian countryside.

His attachment to Canada grew with trav-el. He hitched across the country three times, then thumbed his way to the Yukon. Thisattachment surfaces in his songs of rail lines, farms, and the St. Lawrence Seaway. He grewto understand the people while working inToronto train yards, the Yukon bush, and as acarpenter in the Eastern Townships. Theseexperiences colour his first CD, Torn ScreenDoor, with songs like Hard Steel Mill, GypsyBoys, and Working Poor and his second, FarEnd of Summer, with Highway, Flowers ofSaskatchewan and February Morning Drive.

In concert David is a singer and a story-teller. His wry humour and astute observa-tions combined with his openhearted singingstyle have earned him a loyal following.

David lives with his wife, artist BethGirdler and in the quiet but charmingLanark Highlands in southern Ontario. Theyare visited often by their son Colin, daughtersAmy and Julia and grandson Tristan.

In the first-ever season of the NewHamburg Live! Festival of the Arts, in2009, the Wednesday night Gala was createdas the opening night of the five-day event.

It says a lot about the success of the Festivalthat the mid-week Gala is now also in themiddle of an event that has grown to includean entire week, and more than a dozen per-formances and exhibitions.

New Hamburg Live! organizers recognizethat they now have the opportunity both tobring new talent and events to the communi-ty, and also to celebrate relationships thathave grown over the five years of the Festival.

None of those relationships are warmerthan that with Ken Whiteley. Ken was fea-tured in the first two gospel concerts of theFestival, and also at the Jazz Night in 2012.But executive director Paul Knowles com-ments that “It’s ironic that we’ve had Kendoing superb performances in gospel and jazz

events, but we’venever had him atwhat he doesbest –Bluegrass.”

That oversightwill be remediedon Wednesday,May 29, at 7p.m., at the NewHamburg Live!Gala. Ken andan assortment offriends – includ-ing NewHamburg’s own

Charlene Nafziger, who has played with Kenduring previous New Hamburg Live!Festivals, and at Hugh’s Room in Toronto –will join Ken’s band for the evening.

What an evening it will be! The Gala will

also include featured work from the Festival’sVisual Art Show, a silent auction that willinclude works by the artists from the showand other great items (theatre tickets, wine, autographed books and more), and refresh-ments.

Ken Whiteley is a Canadian music legend. He has been awarded with a Canadian FolkMusic Award, a Genie Award for best originalsong in a Canadian film, and a LifetimeAchievement Award from the Ontario Councilof Folk Festivals. Named after theaboriginal name forthe Thames river inLondon, Ontario –Askunessippi – theAntler River Projectis a group of six ver-satile musicianswho blend jazz andworld music in theiroriginal composi-tions. The membersof ARP are: FionaWilkinson (flute),Oliver Whitehead(acoustic guitar),Stephen Holowitz(piano), Mitch Tyler(bass), Rob Larose (drum kit and percussion),Alfredo Caxaj (vocals and percussion).

Their unique style of music is on stage at

New HamburgLive! on Friday,May 31, at 7:30p.m. at SteinmannMennonite Church.

Antler RiverProject can best bedescribed as afusion of influences. While stronglyrooted to theirhome, the groupresponds to influ-ences from aroundthe world.

The group’scompositions cansometimes barely

contain the multitude of influences drivingtheir musical ideas and rhythms: tunes evolvein seconds from African to Latin grooves with

echoes of Celtic melodies as Fiona’s soaringflute flies from one continent to the next;Renaissance dances become a springboard forpercussive Frank Zappa-like developments;every composition highlights ARP’s ingen-ious blend of technical virtuosity and knowl-edge of world music. In the creative process, all the performers work together with aunique synergy, collectively adding their ideasand improvisational styles to each new com-position brought forward by composers OliverWhitehead and Stephen Holowitz. ARP is atthe forefront of a new blend of world influ-ences which result in a fresh and highly

charged integration of musical styles.Collaboration began in 1997 when the

core group was started by Oliver Whiteheadfor the first performance and subsequent CBCrecording of his composition “A Mass for AllCreatures”. Since then, the Antler RiverProject has developed a vast array of originalmaterial while working with a host of worldmusic, jazz, classical and choral musicians.

The CD Latitude 43, named for the geo-graphical site of the Forks of the Thames, highlights the compositions that have becomegroup and audience favourites, and demon-strates the range and versatility of the group.

While New HamburgLive! is best known forthe week-long Festival ofthe Arts (May 27-June 2,2013), the not-for-profitorganization has beeninvolved in other commu-nity projects, as well.

Those who attended the 2012 Festival gospel concert,

will remember that dona-tions were received to aida musician who facedfinancial crisis because ofillness in his family. Morethan $2,200 was raised tohelp the musician, TomCummings, who had beenunable to work as hestayed at the bedside ofhis dying wife.

From its inception NewHamburg Live! has beenhonoured for its culturalcontribution, includingreceiving a WaterlooRegion Arts Award. Thisyear, executive directorPaul Knowles received the

Since its launch in 2009, the New HamburgLive! Festival of the Arts has featured a hand-clapping, joyous gospel concert as its finale. This year is no exception – but we know theconcert itself, Sunday afternoon, June 2 at 3p.m. will indeed be exceptional.

In the fall of 2012, London Pro Musica, anauditioned classical choir, broke with its tra-dition and performed a full-tilt gospel concert, led by its enthusiastic new Music Director,Vicki St. Pierre – who is also Music Director ofNew Hamburg Live!

The concert brought down the house at theAeolian Hall in London, and New HamburgLive! organizers promptly booked the choir to

close our 2013 Festival. We also booked the

guest soloist – the tal-ented Denise Pelley, agreat friend of NewHamburg Live! whohas been featured inour two most recentgospel concerts, as wellas in our night at theJazz Room.

Denise and the choirare backed up by asuperb band, led by pianist Steve Holowitz, who will also perform at New Hamburg Live!

Reviewer Josh Grabowski had this to sayabout the concert when it was performed in

London: “The standout moments came whenthe band, choir, and Pelley collaborated onsections, resulting in the audience clappingalong... It was a soulful concert, featuringbeautifully performed renditions of songssuch as Waitin’ For The Light, Deep River, andBridge Over Troubled Water.”

The concert soars at Steinmann Church.

The sixth annual New Hamburg Live!Festival of the Arts will bring the best inmusic, drama, art and literature to NewHamburg, from May 26- June 1, 2014.

And while our attention is still on the amaz-ing line-up we have planned for this year,2013, we can already announce some detailsof events deeper in the calendar.

In 2014, we will welcome back the astonish-ing Factory Arts String Quartet, who delight-ed classical music fans, and newcomers to thegenre alike, in 2012.

We have also booked the Toronto company,

Essential Opera, tobring their very funnyand beautifully per-formed productioncalled “Two Weddingsand a Funeral” to our2014 Festival. Thisprogram – includingPuccini’s “GianniSchicchi” andDonizetti’s “Il cam-panello” – drew ravereviews, and a lot ofdelighted laughterwhen it was staged in Toronto this year.

But before the full Festival next year, NewHamburg Live! will also be reviving the eight-year tradition of presenting Charles Dickens’“A Christmas Carol” during the 2013Christmas season. As always, proceeds will goto Wilmot Family Resource Centre.

Watch www.newhamburglive for details.
