For lovers of comicopera, the names “Gilbertand Sullivan” are spokenwith a challenging combi-nation of awe, wonder, andlaughter. These two portly,mutton-chopped Victorianmen produced far morethan their quota of bril-liant lyrics (the work ofW.S. Gilbert), and memo-rable music (contributedby Arthur Sullivan) infourteen productions that
are performed all over theworld to this day.
Their best-known works include H.M.S. Pinafore,The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado.

The New Hamburg Live!Festival of the Arts was started in2009 as a “kitchen table” volun-teer organization. The foundersare Nancy and Paul Knowles –Nancy was honoured as a WilmotTownship “Citizen of the Year” for her work with theFestival, and New Hamburg Live! has also beennominated for a Kitchener-Waterloo Arts Award.
The first season was a successful experiment, andthis has led to stage two – the incorporation of NewHamburg Live! as a legal entity, a not-for-profit cor-poration. This may open the door to funding sourceswhich would allow the Festival to grow.
Incorporation has been facilitated by Waterloolawyer David Jutzi, who has provided all the neces-sary legal services on a volunteer basis. Says Paul
Knowles, “We could not havedone this without David’s gen-erous participation.”
During 2010, New HamburgLive! will officially be incorpo-rated; its board of directors will
include Ginny Dybenko, Dean of the WLU School ofBusiness; Karl Keilhau, a musician who lives inFoxboro Green; Dr. David Whitehead, BrockUniversity School of Business; Linda Whitehead; Dr.Susan Seyler, a family physician; John Hanson,President of Ten Forward Enterprises; AnitaHanson; Nancy Knowles; and Paul Knowles.
New Hamburg Live! cannot issue charitablereceipts, but donations from individuals and compa-nies wanting to support the arts on a local basis arewelcomed and appreciated.

You might expect a performanceof the music written and sung bynuns of the 17th century to bebeautiful, mystical and compelling. You might not expect it to also beamusing.
But “Celestial Sirens”, performedby Capella Intima, is all of theabove. This ensemble, led by artis-tic director and tenor Bud Roach, also includes sopranos ErinBardua and Dawn Bailey, mezzosoprano Vicki St. Pierre, organist Sara-AnneChurchill and Theorboist Lucas Harris.
The concert is held at a venue new to New
Hamburg Live! – at St. George’sAnglican Church, 3 Byron Street,at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 4.
Featured is the music of theBenedictine nuns of 17th centuryMilan, with the songs punctuatedby letters written by the oftenrebellious nuns, and about them,by their church superiors.
The music is sublime; the instru-mentation and arrangements areauthentic to the period; the setting
for the concert is perfect. Altogether, this CapellaIntima Performance will be an unexpected high-light of the 2010 New Hamburg Live! Festival.

The Elmer Iseler Singers, conducted by ArtisticDirector Lydia Adams, is a twenty-voice profes-sional chamber choir based in Toronto. Foundedby the late Dr. Elmer Iseler in 1979, the ElmerIseler Singers are one of Canada’s most illustriousprofessional choral ensembles.
The choir has built an enviable internationalreputation through its concerts, broadcasts andrecordings throughout Canada, the United Statesand on the international concert stage. Known forthe unique beauty of their sound, the Elmer IselerSingers bring to life exciting repertoire that spans500 years of great choral music.
The choir regularly commissions and performsnew works, and is frequently involved in radio andtelevision broadcasts and a variety of recordingprojects.
Elmer Iseler was known as “the Dean ofCanadian Choral Conductors.” Born in PortColborne, he commenced studies at WaterlooCollege in 1945, and then began spending time inNew Hamburg, where he was dating datingTrudie Mosig, the daughter of Reverend Richard
Mosig, the pastor ofTrinity LutheranChurch. They married ayear later.
According to a storyin the New HamburgIndependent, Trudie’smother Melinda Mosigwas the choir directorfor Trinity’s youth choir, made up entirely ofgirls. Iseler suggestedhe could take over thechoir and bring boysinto the fold... and hedid.
The New Hamburg Youth Choir becameElmer’s pride and joy, and launched the careerthat would define the rest of his life.

Each of the talented women in “Quartette”has a vibrant musical career; together, thisastonishing foursome offers a remarkable musi-cal experience. And Quartette is one stage at 8p.m., Saturday, June 5, at Steinmann MennoniteChurch, part of our 2010 New Hamburg Live!Festival of the Arts.
Quartette was formed for a concert atToronto’s Harbourfront in the summer of 1993.The following year, the group received theCanadian Country Music Association's award forbest vocal collaboration. In 1995 and 1996, it gar-nered Juno Award nominations for top countrygroup. An hour-long showcase on “AdrienneClarkson Presents” on CBC-TV introduced themto an even wider audience in 1995.
While Quartette continues to tour extensivelyin Canada with a three-piece back-up band, andplay select dates with symphony orchestras, eachmember – Gwen Swick, Caitlin Hanford,Cindy Church, and Sylvia Tyson – has beenable to maintain their individual solo careers.Sometimes only barely.
Says Cindy with a laugh, “My most schizo-phrenic moment was a gig in Calgary at a com-
munity festival in the summer (of 2007). On theSunday, Quartette was onstage from 1pm to1:30pm., and I performed with Lunch At Allen’sfrom 2:15pm to 4pm. That was wacky!”
“When Quartette started we said we were stillgoing to do our solo careers,” recalls Hanford.“Doing other projects has allowed us to do andexplore different things.”
Within Quartette, Sylvia takes care of finan-cial and contractual matters; Cindy handlestravel and booking itineraries; Gwen overseesrehearsals and hiring musicians; and Caitlinacts as the product manager for their catalog.
“It’s the strength of the music, and the soundof the four of us that has kept Quartette going,”says Sylvia. “We were once asked by an inter-viewer if we ever have cat fights, and we allbroke up laughing. Only a guy would ask thatquestion.”
New Hamburg Live! is committed to bringingthe best in Canadian roots music as part of itsannual mandate, and we are thrilled to followthe 2009 success of David Francey withQuartette, one of the best-known – and certainlymost talented – music groups in the country.

The New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts isdelighted to present the Elmer Iseler Singers,Thursday, June 4, at 8 p.m., at Zion UnitedChurch, with a pre-concert talk at 7:30 p.m.

Festival.

There is no doubt that the gospel/bluegrassconcert that closed the 2009 New Hamburg Live!Festival of the Arts was a highlight of that firstFestival.
On Thursday, June 3, some of the finest classicalsingers in North America appear at the NewHamburg Live! Festival of the Arts to sing “The Bestof G&S”, in a show hosted by Stratford andBroadway star Barry MacGregor, a performer ofsuperb comic timing whose many theatrical roleshave included his star turn in New York and
Stratford as The Fool, in King Lear, oppositeChristopher Plummer.
