MLS SCHEDULE - WEEK 20

THAT’S WHAT THEY SAIDHere is what Revolution Sporting Director & Head Coach Bruce Arena and goalkeeper Matt Turner had to say ahead of Wednesday's match vs. Van-couver. For complete video soundbytes and transcripts, please contact the Revolution communications staff at [email protected] or visit www.revolutionsoccer.net/media.

New England Revolution Sporting Director & Head Coach Bruce ArenaOn the backline's recent form:Arena: “I think for the most part we've done a good job. Perhaps we've given away four points or so --- maybe even you could argue six points -- but for the most part, defensively, we've played well, but that's probably a combination of things. We've had some good goalkeeping and our backline has played well, but collecitvely we've played well when our opponents are in possession.”

-----

New England Revolution Goalkeeping Matt TurnerOn Wednesday's matchup with Vancouver:Turner: “They lost at home, so they're going to [try to] right the ship on the road the best they can. They play on turf at home, so they're not going to be too out of their element even though they're on the East Coast. They're really organized. They've been really sound defensively all year, so we're going to have to be sharp in the final third if we want to break them down, then, take care of business at home as usual. Then, we go to Cincinnati on Sunday, a team that's kind of found form recently, and hopefully we can keep our form."

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION VS. VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC: WEDNESDAY, JULY 17, 2019

TEAM NOTES

Forward Teal Bunbury has rediscovered his scoring touch since the turn of June. Bunbury has scored six times in the team's last seven contests across all competitions, including the game-winning goal on June 2 at LA Galaxy, the game winner in extra time of New England's U.S. Open Cup Fourth Roud win on June 11 at New York, and the game winner in sec-ond-half stoppage time on June 29 vs. Houston. With his fourth-minute goal on July 12 at D.C., Bunbury notched the team's quickest goal of the season and extended his goal-scoring streak to three games.

The 10-year MLS veteran also netted his 50th career MLS goal at Colorado on July 4, when he chested down a cross from Edgar Castillo and slotted it past Tim Howard. Of his 51 MLS goals, 32 have come as a member of the Revolution. He is the 18th active player to eclipse the 50-goal mark.

For his two-goal effort in the Open Cup victory in New Jersey, which also included an equalizing goal in the 85th minute, Bunbury was voted TheCup.us' Player of the Round. He led the Revs with two shots on target, two chances created, and 29 total duels in a 120-minute shift. Bunbury also earned a bench spot on MLSsoccer.com's Team of the Week after coming off the bench to score the game winner vs. Houston.

Bunbury's form is among the best in MLS. His four goals since June 1 are tied for fourth most in the league over that span:

The New England Revolution have acquired forward Gustavo Bou (pro-nounced BOH) via transfer from Liga MX side Club Tijuana. The 29-year-old Argentine brings 12 years of experience across Argentina, Mexico, and Ec-uador, where he recorded 120 combined goals and assists with top-flight clubs including River Plate and Racing Club. Bou becomes the first player added to the roster under Sporting Director Bruce Arena and Technical Di-rector Curt Onalfo. The Designated Player is eligible to make his MLS and Revolution debut at home this Wednesday vs. Vancouver.

The Concordia, Argentina native spent the last two years with Liga MX side Tijuana, where he recorded 21 goals and 14 assists in 55 appearances af-ter transferring from Racing Club in July 2017. He began his professional career with South American powerhouse Club Atlético River Plate in 2008, signing his first senior contract at the age of 18 after several seasons with the club’s reserve team.

In Liga MX's 2019 Torneo Clausura, Bou paced Xolos with 10 goals – tied for fifth most in the league – while his five assists also ranked in the top five league-wide. In his debut season with Tijuana in 2017-18, he registered 10 goals and eight assists. Three of those assists came across his four ap-pearances in the 2018 Clausura Liguilla championship stage.

Bou at a Glance:• Scored 21 goals in 55 games with Club Tijuana, including 10 in each

Liga MX campaign in 2017-18 and 2018-19. • Totaled 48 goals in more than 100 appearances across all competi-

tions with Racing Club from 2014-17.• Led all scorers in the 2015 Copa Libertadores with eight goals, and

also led Racing in scoring with 10 tallies in 2014. • Began career at River Plate at age of 18 in 2008 after developing with

the club’s reserve team. • Across all competitions, Bou has recorded more than 270 games

played, 85 goals scored, and 35 assists in 12-year career spanning Argentina, Mexico, and Ecuador.

Bou enjoyed a productive four-year stretch with Argentine side Racing Club from 2014-18, part of which was spent on loan from Tijuana. In his Racing career, he played in over 120 matches, made 90-plus starts, and scored 48 goals. In his debut season with La Academia, he led the team in scoring with 10 goals in 15 league games – only one goal shy of the league lead — en route to the club’s 17th first-division title. That marked the first of four double-digit scoring campaigns in his career. Bou led all players with eight goals, and added four assists in 10 starts.  With River Plate, Bou recorded three goals in 32 appearances from 2008-12, and helped the team lift the 2008 Primera Division championship, as well as a 2011-12 Primera B Nacional title. He was then loaned to Argen-tine side Club Olimpo for the 2012-13 campaign, scoring eight goals in 33 league matches. Bou completed another loan stint with top-flight Ecuador-ian outfit L.D.U. Quito from July 2013 through January 2014, recording four goals and two assists in 20 Serie A games.

Bruce Arena has taken his place on the Revolution bench on the cusp of a major MLS record: most coaching wins. Arena’s 205 career regular sea-son wins are second only to Sigi Schmid’s 240, as the duo are the only two coaches in MLS history to eclipse the double-century mark. Arena also ranks second all-time in total points earned with 682, behind Schmid's 843.

While Arena has work ahead of him in order to catch Sigi Schmid on the all-time wins list, his five MLS Cup victories are unlikely to rivaled any-time soon, as no other active coach has more than one trophy under their belt. The only other active MLS coaches with MLS Cup wins are Bob Brad-ley (1998), Caleb Porter (2015), Brian Schmetzer (2016), and Greg Vanney (2017).

The New England Revolution appointed Bruce Arena as the club’s sporting director and head coach on May 14. Arena, the winningest coach in United States Men’s National Team history and a five-time MLS Cup champion, brings more than four decades of coaching experience at the international and domestic levels to the Revolution. After immediatley assuming his du-ties as sporting director, Arena made his debut on the Revolution sidelines on June 2 against his former club, the LA Galaxy, a 2-1 win. “Bruce is one of the most successful coaches in American soccer history, and we feel his commitment to excellence, track record of winning cham-pionships in Major League Soccer, as well as his success at the interna-tional level, makes him the best person to bring the Revolution back to MLS Cup contention,” Revolution Investor/Operator Robert Kraft said. “We have known Bruce dating back to the advent of MLS, and we have full confidence that he will raise the level of our club to the standard we all expect and demand.”

The New York native joins the Revolution following one of the most decorat-ed coaching careers in American soccer history. Arena’s resume includes a record five MLS Cup titles, three MLS Supporters’ Shields, seven MLS con-ference championships, one U.S. Open Cup title, and one Concacaf Champi-ons’ Cup. In his previous 14 seasons as an MLS coach, Arena earned three MLS Coach of the Year selections, first in 1997 with D.C. United before being honored in 2009 and 2011 with the LA Galaxy. At the collegiate level with the University of Virginia (1978-95), he also tallied five NCAA College Cup wins with six ACC Men’s Soccer championships.

Arena, who served as head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team from 1998-2006 and 2016-17, holds the record for most wins by a USMNT head coach with 81. He led the United States to a Quarterfinal finish in the 2002 FIFA Men’s World Cup – the country’s best showing since 1930 – as well an appearance in the 2006 FIFA Men’s World Cup. Arena also coached the U.S. Men’s National Team to more Gold Cup titles than any other coach, having captured the continental trophy in 2002, 2005, and 2017.

“It was evident when talking with Bruce that we share a vision for the fu-ture of the Revolution and we look forward to having him oversee our soc-cer organization,” Revolution President Brian Bilello said. “We believe that now is the time for a change in leadership and there is no one better suited to usher in a new era of success in New England.”

Arena, 67, becomes the winningest active coach in MLS history upon his return to the sideline. He accrued a 202-121-89 record across 14 seasons with D.C. United (1996-98), New York Red Bulls (2006-07), and LA Galaxy (2008-16). His five MLS Cup wins with D.C. United (1996, 1997) and LA Gal-axy (2011, 2012, 2014) are the most by a head coach in league history, while his three Supporters Shields are tied with Sigi Schmid for the most all-time.

CARLES, THE CREATOR: NEWCOMER GIL AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS REVS ON BRINK OF LONGEST UNBEATEN RUN SINCE 2014

The Revolution enter Wednesday evening's showdown with Whitecaps FC riding the longest active unbeaten streak in MLS at eight games (4-0-4). New England's undefeated streak matches its longest since 2015, when the club went on a 7-0-1 run between July and Sept. en route to an MLS Cup Playoff berth. On Wednesday, the club will look to equal its nine-game unbeaten run from 2014, which spanned the regular season and MLS Cup Playoffs.

New England's current away form is also among the league's best. The team is unbeaten in its last four away matches (2-0-2), tied with the Colo-rado Rapids for the longest active road unbeaten streak in MLS. When the Revs visit FC Cincinnati on Sunday, the club will look to register its longest away unbeaten run since 2014, when it went 4-0-1 across the regular season and playoffs.

The Revolution's backline has been pivotal during the course of the club's eight-game unbeaten run. New England has conceded only eight goals over its last eight games, tied with the San Jose Earthquakes and Orlando City SC for best goals against average through the last eight games. The Revs' 2-2 draw on July 12 at D.C. snapped a seven-game streak in which the team had not conceded more than one goal.

The South Hamilton, Mass. native is also the only two-time recipient of the UnitedHealthcare Revolution Acad-emy Player of the Year Award in 2014 and 2015, and was also named the Revs’ U-14 Player of the Year in 2013. Following his time in the Revolution Academy, Rennicks played two years at the University of Indiana before signing his Homegrown Player contract.

For his regular season career, Farrell owns 206 games played, 204 starts, two goals, and seven assists across 18,168 minutes played. Those totals have the Louisville, Ky. native ranking first among all MLS field players in games started and minutes since 2013, trailing only New York Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles.

Revolution Homegrown Player Zachary Herivaux played a key role in the Haiti National Team's historic run at the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup. Herivaux helped Les Grenadiers win their Gold Cup group for the first time ever en route to a Semifinal appearance -- the nation's best all-time finish at the continental tournament in eight entries. Herivaux now owns 12 career caps with Haiti's senior squad.

The 23-year-old Brookline native started and played 90 minutes in each of Haiti's first two matches of the group stage, both victories, and came on as a substitute to help Les Grenadiers seal a come-from-behind Quarterfinal victory vs. Canada, Herivaux also logged 21 minutes as a substitute in the Semifinal vs. Mexico, which saw Haiti nearly knock off the Concacaf pow-erhouse in extra time.

This season, he has seen 854 minutes of action across 10 appearances in the USL Championship while on loan with Birmingham Legion FC. All of his 10 appearances have been starts and include time in central defense.

TEAM NOTES

Sporting Director and Head Coach Bruce Arena has made four hires to the Revolution's technical staff since taking his post, installing Curt On-alfo as Technical Director, Richie Williams as Assistant Coach, Dave van den Bergh as Assistant Coach, and Jarryd Phillips as Director of Sports Performance.

Onalfo joins the Revolution after more than six years in multiple roles with the LA Galaxy from 2011-17, where he won three MLS Cups alongside Arena as an assistant coach from 2011-16, which included duties as the inaugural head coach of the club’s USL side, LA Galaxy II, from 2014-16. He was then named the Galaxy’s eighth head coach in club history ahead of the 2017 season after Arena’s return to the U.S. Men’s National Team, and coached the club for the first 20 games of the campaign.

Williams arrives in New England after spending the last 15 years in a va-riety of coaching roles within MLS and the United States Men’s National Team, including two stints as an assistant to Bruce Arena. He served as an assistant coach on Arena’s staff with the USMNT from 2017-18, as well as the New York Red Bulls from 2006-07. In addition, Williams served as an assistant coach with Real Salt Lake in 2016, head coach of the United States Under-18 National Team from 2011-12, and head coach of the Unit-ed States Under-17 National Team from 2012-15. Williams won three MLS Cups as a player, all under Arena with D.C. United in 1996, 1997, and 1999.

Van den Bergh, who assumed his post on July 1, arrives in New England following nine years as a coach with various United States Youth National teams. The Amsterdam, Netherlands native served as assistant coach for the United States Under-20 Men's National Team in 2019 and from 2010-16, head coach of the United States Under-19 Men's National Team in 2018, and head coach of the United States Under-15s from 2016-18.

Phillips joins the Revolution with six years of MLS, NASL, USL, and NCAA experience as a sports science and performance coach. He most recently established and directed all facets of the performance department for Min-nesota United FC’s first team and academy beginning in July 2016.

ARENA ADDS FOUR EXPERIENCED COACHES TO TECHNICAL STAFF

On Oct. 15, 2018, the New England Revolution broke ground on the Rev-olution Training Center, a world-class facility that will be the center of the Revolution first team and Academy operations.  Integrated into the wetlands surrounding Gillette Stadium, the Revolution Training Center will feature state-of-the-art fitness and medical centers, six profession-al-grade fields, team dining and lounge spaces, and office space for the club's technical staff and front office, among other amenities.

The privately-financed, $35-million project will give the New England Rev-olution one of the most advanced and expansive team facilities in Major League Soccer. The center will span 68 acres with 42,000 square feet of buildings and three new full-size fields – two natural grass surfaces and one turf pitch. With the club’s existing training field, Gillette Stadium, and the Empower Field House, upon completion the club will boast a total of six professional-grade fields. The existing natural grass field on the site will be dedicated for use by the Revolution Academy.

Construction began with the groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, Oct. 15, and completion is scheduled for summer 2019.

REVOLUTION TRAINING CENTER SET TO OPEN IN 2019

The New England Revolution and Special Olympics Massachusetts are once again teaming up to leverage the power of sports to promote an envi-ronment of inclusion and friendly competition. For the fifth year, the Revo-lution will field a Special Olympics Unified soccer team, comprised of more than a dozen local athletes and volunteers with and without intellectual disabilities.

Prior to the clubs' MLS match at Audi Field on Friday, July 12, the Revs' Uni-fied athletes took the pitch for their first match of the season against D.C. United's Unified squad. The Unified team traveled to the nation's capital in style, as the team's flights were provided for courtesy of JetBlue. Later this season, the Unified team will also face New York City FC at Gillette stadium on Sunday, Sept. 29.

The ongoing partnership between the Revolution and Special Olympics Massachusetts culminates in the New England Revolution Charitable Foundation's premiere annual event, Bowl for a Goal presented by Arbella Insurance, on Aug. 21. The event at Splitsville Luxury Lanes in Patriot Place begins at 6:00 p.m. ET, with general admission tickets on sale for $35. Last year, the event raised a record $80,000 for Special Olympics Massachu-setts.

Bruce Arena is currently in his first season as Sporting Director and Head Coach of the New England Revolution af-ter his appointment to the position on May 14, 2019. The five-time MLS Cup winner is the eighth head coach in club history and joins the Revolution following a Hall of Fame coaching career that has spanned more than 40 seasons at the collegiate, professional, and international levels.

The Long Island, N.Y. native joins the Revolution following one of the most decorated coaching careers in American soccer history. Arena’s MLS resume includes a record five MLS Cup titles, three Supporters’ Shields, seven conference championships, one U.S. Open Cup title, and one Concacaf Champions’ Cup. In his previous 14 seasons as an MLS coach, Arena earned three MLS Coach of the Year selections, first in 1997 with D.C. United before being honored in 2009 and 2011 with the LA Galaxy. He returned to the sidelines as the winningest active head coach in MLS history with a record of 203-121-89, and is one of two coaches to have surpassed 200 career regular season wins, along with Sigi Schmid.

On the international stage, Arena, 67, coached the U.S. Men’s National Team over two separate stints from 1998-2006 and 2016-17, amassing the most wins in the program’s history with a record of 81-35-32. He led the Stars and Stripes to a Quarterfinal finish in the 2002 FIFA Men’s World Cup – the country’s best showing since 1930 – as well an appearance in the 2006 FIFA Men’s World Cup. Arena also guided the U.S. Men’s National Team to more Gold Cup titles than any other coach, capturing the continental trophy three times in 2002, 2005, and 2017.

Before his time in the professional ranks, Arena began his head coaching career with one season at the University of Puget Sound (1976), before being named the head coach at the University of Virginia in 1978. During his decorated 18-year tenure at Virginia, he led the Cavaliers to five NCAA Division-1 National Champion-ships, including four in a row from 1991-94, as well as six ACC Men’s Soccer titles (1988, 1991-95). While at Virginia, Arena coached a number of American soccer legends, including Claudio Reyna, John Harkes, and current D.C. United Head Coach Ben Olsen.

In 1996, Arena received an offer to lead the United States Under-23 Men’s National Team in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Shortly after the Olympics, he assumed the head role with D.C. United, where he led the Black-and-Red to a 61-35 record, including the first two MLS Cup titles in 1996 and 1997, and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup title in 1996.

Following the 1998 FIFA Men’s World Cup in France, the United States Soccer Federation turned to Arena, who helped the team qualify for the 2002 FIFA Men’s World Cup. In the tournament, Arena’s team recorded an impressive win over powerhouse Portugal and topped Mexico, 2-0, in the Round of 16 en route to the nation’s first appearance in the Quarterfinals in a 72-year span. That same year, Arena led the USMNT to the Concacaf Gold Cup title, one of his three triumphs in the competition.

In 2005, Arena won his second Concacaf Gold Cup ahead of the 2006 FIFA Men’s World Cup in Germany. In the 2006 tournament, the United States earned a 1-1 draw against Italy, but a 2-1 defeat to Ghana sent the USMNT home early.

The next season, Arena took charge of the New York Red Bulls, where he spent the end of the 2006 season and all of the 2007 campaign.  In 2008, Arena joined the LA Galaxy for what would be an incredible nine-year tenure that included three MLS Cups in a four-year span and two Supporters’ Shields in 2010 and 2011.

Following his decorated career with the Galaxy, Arena rejoined the U.S. Men’s National Team in November 2016. In his second run as head coach, he lost only two out of 18 games at the helm, though the United States fell short of qualification for the 2018 FIFA Men’s World Cup.

A 2010 National Soccer Hall of Fame inductee, Arena was named the 2015 Werner Fricker Builder Award recipient, earning U.S. Soccer’s highest honor for his more than 40 years of service to the game.

A talented lacrosse player, Arena grew up on Long Island and would go on to attend Nassau Community College, where he played both lacrosse and soccer. Arena then transferred to Cornell University in 1971, where as a goalkeeper, he led his team to the 1972 NCAA College Cup Final Four and earned the tournament’s Most Valuable Defensive Player award. During the 1973 season, Arena contributed as an assistant coach with Cornell, before then accepting a head coaching position at the University of Puget Sound.

Off the field, Arena has authored a number of books and is a member of the NJCAA Lacrosse Hall of Fame, after receiving induction in 2008. Arena’s son, Kenny, was an assistant coach under his father with the LA Galaxy from 2014-16, before joining the staff of Los Angeles FC in 2018, where he currently serves as an assistant coach.
