His mes- sage will be one of resilience and the critical necessity to rebound from adversity. Herren was a celebrated basketball star at Durfee High School in Fall River, MA. He scored a record 2,073 points as the community rallied around his success and cheered him on. He played two seasons in the NBA, one with his hometown team the Boston Celtics. But behind the success was a growing drug addic- tion. What started as drinking and smoking with high school friends morphed into an addiction to cocaine, painkillers and heroin. He went on to play in five countries overseas before losing everything to the disease of addiction. “My substance use derailed my professional basketball path,” says Herren. “I had to pivot and I had to pick myself up and focus my pas- sion and my purpose in a different direction.” Herren’s story of redemption and recovery is compelling. He went from earning $50,000 a month playing basketball to being broke, un- able to provide for his family and near death multiple times from overdosing. “It wasn’t until I found my true baseline and recognized the work that was going to be necessary to come out of it, that I realized one step at a time you can move forward.” With the help of family and the support of others in recovery, Herren worked his way to sobriety in 2008 and, one day at a time, has stayed there. He shares his story nationwide through Herren Talks giving hundreds of pre- sentations to students, reaching them with a message that sparks discussion. Sweitzer served as senior vice president of global business development and public affairs for GTECH, the predecessor of IGT. He oversaw worldwide business development, public relations and government relations and is known for his integrity, leadership, and insight into complex geopolitical situations. Influential Rhode Island Leader Donald R. Sweitzer to be Honored

Former Boston CeltiCs and Fall River basketball superstar Chris Herren will deliver this year’s commencement address to New England Institute of Technology graduates on Sunday, May 5, 2019, at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island. His mes-sage will be one of resilience and the critical necessity to rebound from adversity.

Herren was a celebrated basketball star at Durfee High School in Fall River, MA. He scored a record 2,073 points as the community rallied around his success and cheered him on. He played two seasons in the NBA, one with his hometown team the Boston Celtics. But behind the success was a growing drug addic-tion. What started as drinking and smoking with high school friends morphed into an addiction to cocaine, painkillers and heroin. He went on to play in five countries overseas before losing everything to the disease of addiction.

“My substance use derailed my professional basketball path,” says Herren. “I had to pivot and I had to pick myself up and focus my pas-sion and my purpose in a different direction.”

Herren’s story of redemption and recovery is compelling. He went from earning $50,000 a month playing basketball to being broke, un-able to provide for his family and near death multiple times from overdosing.

“It wasn’t until I found my true baseline and recognized the work that was going to be necessary to come out of it, that I realized one step at a time you can move forward.”

With the help of family and the support of others in recovery, Herren worked his way to sobriety in 2008 and, one day at a time, has stayed there. It’s impressive to see faculty and students work together not only for their own personal growth but also for the good of the university. Congratulations to the students and faculty of NEIT’s Business Management program for the numerous awards they received at the 2019 Society for Advancement of Management (SAM) International Business Conference held in March. The NEIT community appreci-ates their tireless efforts and dedication.

says Sweitzer. “Otherwise you leave it to other people, and sometimes people with nefarious intentions, to decide who will represent you.”

Sweitzer has retired from corporate life but hasn’t slowed down. He recently returned from Ukraine where he and an IFES delega-tion observed the presidential election. A few days later, he was in Seattle for the Western Regional Conference of the Democratic Governors Association. “I don’t waste much daylight,” he says.

Donald Sweitzer will be honored for his accomplishments during New England Tech’s 78th commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 5th at 11 a.m. at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence.

“Basketball wasn’t my passion, it wasn’t my purpose. I knew that when I was in 7th grade. Because I was good at it, I followed it, but that was not sustainable.”

Herren urges NEIT grads to “make sure their passion and their purpose is directed at the right thing.” Otherwise he says, “It’s like showing up to work every day unhappy.”

Herren is not immune to the sadness and suffering he sees. “The people you help become part of you. We share that struggle together. The miracle is when you see their lives change and it becomes extremely powerful. You’re watch-ing their lives transition into something really special. Something they never imagined.”

phlebotomy license, and we are working on approval to allow us to draw blood labs in our cardiac clinic which I can also do.

Do you have any advice for graduates who are just begin-ning their job search?

Stay confident in the skills that NEIT has taught you as well as use the university’s resources such as resume and inter-view assistance from the Career Services advisors. Stay open minded to various specialties and apply for several positions to determine which one is right for you. I found a position that not only gave me the hours and location I needed but also the experience that I knew would help me grow in my career. I was sure to let my physicians know that I was ready to learn and I continue to do so daily. What can current students do to better prepare themselves for jobs in this field?

I took my classes and instructors very seriously. Their experience and advice is truly valuable. There has not been a day that goes by that I don’t reflect and remember the advice my instructors gave me as to the experiences that lie ahead. Direct patient contact can be quite interesting and informative. By asking patients several questions and listening to their responses and experiences, I learn and achieve more than I ever thought possible.

CONGRATULATIONS to NEIT’s Business Management stu-dents and Assistant Professor/Faculty Advisor, Hank Johnson, for their outstanding achievements for the second consecutive year at the 2019 Society for Advancement of Management (SAM) International Business Conference held in Orlando, Florida on March 27th-30th. Preparing tirelessly since January, the students competed in Knowledge Bowl, Extemporaneous Speaking and the Case Study Competition in both the under-graduate and open divisions.

The open division is typically comprised of graduate students; however, NEIT’s “junior” teams have competed in the open division for the past few years to prepare them for upcoming competitions. Members of this year’s open team were Amaryha Bryan and Brittany Coonan who completed their Bachelor of Science degrees this past March, along with Joe Foley and Isai Hernandez. The undergraduate team included Emma Peterson, Luke Marcotte, Erika Sinesi and Sarrah Berkery. Their many impressive awards at the competition included:

• The open team won the overall award for its division. The undergraduate team placed third.

• The open team placed second in the Knowledge Bowlwhile the undergraduate team placed third.

• Open team members Joe Foley finished second and Ama-ryha Bryan finished third in the Extemporaneous Speaking competition. Luke Marcotte placed second in the undergraduate competition.

• Sarrah Berkery was one of four students to be namedNational Outstanding Student and is the second NEIT student to receive this prestigious award. Emma Peterson and Brittany Coonan both won Regional Outstanding Student honors.

• NEIT’s SAM Chapter was recognized as the second-bestchapter in the country.

Business Management Team Sweeps National Awards

• Hank Johnson won the Outstanding National FacultyAdvisor Award for the second consecutive year along with the Phil Carrol Advancement of Management Award in Business Education, one of SAM’s most prestigious awards.

In addition to the competitions, Emma, Luke, Brittany and Amaryha presented a workshop with Hank Johnson on Gamification in Higher Education. Christine Stevens, Business Management department chair, Hank Johnson and Sarrah pre-sented their research paper “It is Nice to Be the Expert: Student Perceptions of a Paired Course Design with Peer Mentorship”.

Dr. Stevens stated, “We are definitely very proud of these students. They worked so hard! It was inspiring to witness both their focus and determination to do well in the competitions as well as their commitment to their team members. Hank really deserved his recognitions. Special thanks to Dr. Nancy Car-riuolo, NEIT’s Vice President of Advancement, and Dr. Bob Galkin, prominent Rhode Island business leader and a 2017 NEIT Honorary Degree recipient, for their support of these students. We are very fortunate.”

Welcome Accepted Students!Accepted Students Day was held on Sunday, March 24th, when students accepted at New England Tech and their families were wel-comed by faculty, staff and current students for a day filled with all that the university has to offer. The day began with a breakfast recep-tion followed by opening remarks by Dr. Douglas H. Sherman, Senior Vice President and Provost, and Lynn M. Fawthrop, Vice President of Enrollment Management and Marketing. Visiting students had the opportunity to attend hands-on learning sessions with NEIT faculty members, tour the campus and residence hall and meet individually with financial aid personnel. Group Pre-sentations were also made by Career Services, Academic Skills/Stu-dent Support and Financial Aid. Student-Only Panel discussions gave visiting students the chance to speak candidly with current NEIT stu-dents about life at New England Tech. Lunch was provided as well as a University Reception giving students the opportunity to celebrate their NEIT acceptance and learn about other aspects of New England Tech. Staff from admissions, residential life, student activities, online and graduate programs, public safety and technical services were on hand to answer any questions.

Special thanks to the NEIT community for contributing to the success of Accepted Students Day!

NEIT celebrates its first Master of Public Health (MPH) graduates! George Andoscia and Steve Eiland recently earned their MPH degree and will continue to make an impact in the community. Because of the online pro-gram format, these students maintained their full-time positions while pursuing their degrees. George and Steve were impressed with the classmate and faculty interaction offered through discussions, virtual group work and homework using the learning platform, as well as video, text, phone and more. “It is a wonderful feeling to see the success of the program through stu-dent success,” said MPH Director, Dr. Magali Angeloni. April is Occupational Therapy Month!New England Tech Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) students Michaela Murphy,Barbara Brown, Elizabeth Redin and Saige Faria, completed their Level II Fieldwork at Phoenix House in Exeter, Rhode Island. This facility is a residential and detox center for men and women with various substance use and mental health conditions. The students had the opportunity to apply their knowledge from OT classes to the natural environment. Using meaningful activities called “occupations” the students focused on daily living activities, social participation, leisure, play, work, education and sleep and rest. Since a person’s functioning in these areas can be impacted by mental health conditions, substance use and trauma, the students engaged the clients in creative hands-on activi-ties to build various skills such as coping strategies, leisure activities, self-esteem, goal setting, productive routines, volunteerism, exercise, self-care and community transition for relapse prevention. In addition to individual and group work, the students completed client and staff needs assessments and satisfaction surveys. They provided a staff in-service, implemented new routines and presented proposals for program development. A “Pay It Forward Program” was established where the women crocheted blankets for “Project Linus,” a community organization that supports children who are ill. The students also established a weekly speaking program for individuals in residential treatment to provide hope to those in the detox unit. In addition, they collaborated with the Phoenix House multidisciplinary staff and provided input regarding client participation and performance to support a client’s best ability to function both in the program as well as in the community. The New England Tech community, along with NEIT Fieldwork Educator, Sheri Lough, OTR/L, are proud of these students and wish them well as they transition to become OTA practitioners!

NEIT Hosts Automotive Competition THE ANNUAL Ocean State Automotive Contest was recently held at NEIT’s Center for Automotive Technology and hosted by the university’s automotive faculty in cooperation with the Rhode Island Automobile Dealers Association.

The competition offers seniors enrolled in auto-motive programs at Rhode Island high school career and technical centers the opportunity to demonstrate their technical abilities. Working at various stations, students must complete specific tasks and troubleshoot technical “bugs” that have been placed in the vehicle. Teams of two students had 10 minutes to complete each workstation.

Congratulations to Coventry High School Career and Technical Center students Romulus Sena and Sean Lambert along with their instructor, Andrew Wessner, on their first-place finish! Both students were awarded a one-year scholarship to New England Tech. Second place winners each received a $1,500 scholarship and third place winners earned $1,000 scholarships. The first-place team will represent Rhode Island at the National Automotive Dealers Competition in New York on April 22-24.

Special thanks to Herb Gowdey, NEIT’s automotive instructor, and Amanda Metzger, Admissions Office Manager, for making this competition a great success.

Thanks to the generosity of Bob Galkin, a 2017 NEIT Honorary Degree recipient, an automotive library has been established and dedicated to Bob’s wife, Wini Galkin, who loved luxury and antique cars. “Wini’s Library” is located at NEIT’s Center for Automotive Technology at the Access Road campus and gives automotive students a place to read, study and take exams. This library is just one of the many ways that NEIT strives to make education acces-sible and affordable for students.

Phi Theta Kappa Students Are Honored! the annual Phi theta kaPPa (PTK) awards ceremony was held on April 5, 2019 at the East Greenwich campus where 41 outstanding NEIT students were inducted into this international honor society. Established in 1918, PTK is the oldest, largest, and most respected honor society

that recognizes associate degree students who maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.80 and dem-onstrate leadership skills and service to others. The Beta Xi Phi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa was chartered at NEIT in 2006. Congratulations to these exceptional students:

NEW ENGLAND TECH, in collaboration with the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) Sec-ondary, Post-Secondary Articulation in Technical Education (SPATE) program, conducted automotive and welding training for 14 instructors from Rhode Island high school career and technical centers to fulfill their yearly professional development training requirements.

The training was based on the National Auto-motive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) and the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Education Foundation require-ments whereby instructors of accredited training programs must attend a minimum of 20 hours per year of recognized industry update training relevant to their program accreditation. NEIT faculty provided two 10-hour workshops this past March that included transmission repairs and welding techniques.

Frederick Gill, a member of NEIT’s Admissions team and the Project Director for SPATE/RIDE, co-ordinated the automotive training program with the various high school career and technical centers. This customized training program was developed by NEIT’s Center for Technology and Industry (CTI). For more than 30 years, CTI has played a major role in training labor supply for employers of all sizes and sectors. To learn more about CTI’s services, contact Doug Leigh, Training and Workforce Development Manager, at 401-739-5000 ext. 3355 or by email at [email protected].
