2 | THE CHRONICLE - DECEMBER 2018

News & Notes

December in Wisconsin marks the

reappearance of a familiar sight, the “winter

waddle” - people swathed in heavy coats and

boots, cautiously making their way along

ice-coated sidewalks. If you haven’t already laid

in a supply of sand and salt for your sidewalks,

best do it now before the rush that follows the

first snow leaves store shelves empty. On snowy

mornings, we are grateful that the City’s Street

Department makes it a priority to have the

Senior Center’s parking lot and sidewalks cleared

before we open our doors. Keep in mind that

whenever Verona schools are closed due to

inclement weather, the Senior Center also

closes. When that happens, home delivered and

congregate meals will be cancelled, so be sure to

keep a few non-perishable staples on hand just

in case. We will do our best to communicate

closings to you, whether by email messages,

phone calls, website postings, or by adding our

closing to those listed on local television

stations.

Many thanks to all the volunteers who did such a

great job of decorating the Senior Center for the

holidays. It looks beautiful! We hope you will

join us for the special holiday events planned for

December, and that you will also have the

opportunity to enjoy time with friends and family

during the holidays.

Please note the Senior Center will be closed

Monday, Dec. 24 and Tuesday, Dec. 25 for

Christmas. We are open on New Year’s Eve

but will be closed Tuesday, January 1 for

New Year’s Day. Happy Holidays!

Mary

Health Bits from Nurse Barbara

While most of us enjoy the holiday season,

we have to be aware if the STRESS in can

cause. The rush of parties, gift shopping, and

decorating can be overwhelming! Here are

some tips for overcoming stress and

depression during the Holidays.

 Keep Realistic Expectations

 Learn to say NO

Laugh. Laughter is the best medicine

 Get enough sleep

Start new traditions or stick with the old

ones

 Get enough sunlight and exercise

 Limit your alcohol intake

 Delegate responsibilities

 Don’t pay for everything

 Keep your eating habits healthy

Have a happy, stress free, healthy, Holiday

Season!

Holiday Happenings

Chili Supper and Tree Lighting

Friday, December 7 4:30-7:00 PM

We are again joining with the Verona Fire Department and the Verona Area Chamber of

Commerce to make the annual Holiday Tree Lighting a fun evening for the whole

community. The Firemen will serve their famous chili. Santa will be available for pictures,

and there will be lots of other activities for the youngsters. We are responsible for

supplying volunteers and providing the treats for the dessert trays. Bring your baked

goods (or store bought) to the Senior Center Friday, Dec 7, between 8 AM

and 3 PM. Please cut treats into serving size pieces and use containers that we do not

have to return. If you would like to sign up to volunteer at the event please call or stop

by the Senior Center 845-7471. There will be a sign up sheet at the front desk!

Friday, December 28

George Bailey has spent his entire

life giving of himself to the people of

Bedford Falls. He has always longed

to travel but never had the

opportunity in order to prevent rich

him from doing so is George's modest building and loan

company, which was founded by his generous father. But

on Christmas Eve, George's Uncle Billy loses the

business's $8,000 while intending to deposit it in the

bank. Potter finds the misplaced money and hides it from

Billy. When the bank examiner discovers the shortage

later that night, George realizes that he will be held

responsible and sent to jail and the company will collapse,

finally allowing Potter to take over the town. Thinking of
